The 16th Chessence Open 2027 will bring three days of competitive classical chess to Willingen (Upland), Germany, from February 12–14, 2027. Organized by Chessence GmbH, the tournament takes place at the Sauerland Stern Hotel and features five Swiss-system rounds across four rating-based groups. The event combines official German DWZ competition, FIDE Standard rating opportunities in three groups, and a Saturday-night blitz tournament.

The competition welcomes a broad range of playing strengths through its Chessence Masters, Premium Open A, Premium Open B, and Premium Open C sections. Participants receive 90 minutes for their first 40 moves, another 15 minutes for the remainder of each game, and a 30-second increment from move one. In addition, the organizer offers cash prizes in every qualifying group, special accommodation packages at the playing venue, and free tournament entry for eligible Chessence Premium and Excellence members.

Willingen is a resort town in Germany’s Sauerland region, known for its winter sports, wooded hills, hiking routes, and outdoor recreation. By hosting the competition at Sauerland Stern Hotel, Chessence makes it possible for players to compete, eat, and stay in the same building. The event is therefore particularly attractive for club players, improving juniors, coaches, and families seeking a structured chess weekend with accommodation and recreational options.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All four sections of the 16th Chessence Open play five rounds using the Swiss pairing system. Each competitor receives 90 minutes to complete the first 40 moves, followed by 15 additional minutes for the remainder of the game. Furthermore, a 30-second increment applies from the first move, allowing players to manage their time throughout lengthy classical encounters.

The tournament follows the applicable FIDE Laws of Chess. Players must reach their boards no later than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of a round; otherwise, the game is lost by forfeit. Because the event features separate rating categories, the organizer assigns each participant to an appropriate competition group according to the published eligibility criteria.

⚖️ Ranking Criteria Points, then Sonneborn-Berger, followed by additional criteria where needed

Tie-Break System

Chessence determines the final standings primarily by the points scored during the tournament. When two or more players finish with equal points, the Sonneborn-Berger system serves as the next ranking criterion. Additional tie-break methods may be applied if necessary to determine the final order.

This system rewards players according to the results achieved by the opponents against whom they scored points. Consequently, two competitors finishing with the same number of points can occupy different positions in the final standings.

Half-Point Bye in Round 1

Chessence permits players to request one half-point bye in the opening round. Competitors using this option receive half a point without playing Round 1, allowing them to begin their tournament participation from the second session.

The request must reach the organizer by February 11, 2027, at 8:00 PM. However, taking the bye does not remove the attendance-confirmation requirement. Players who register a bye must still contact Jürgen Kehr by telephone during the published check-in period to confirm their participation.

🏆 Prize Fund

The 16th Chessence Open offers cash awards for the leading finishers in each of its four classical sections. Chessence provides the same standard prize structure in Chessence Masters, Premium Open A, Premium Open B, and Premium Open C, provided the section has at least six participants.

Cash Prizes per Qualifying Group

Final Position Cash Prize
🥇 1st Place €120
🥈 2nd Place €80
🥉 3rd Place €40
🏆 Total per qualifying group €240

The four groups have identical published prize schedules. Accordingly, if all four groups meet the minimum six-player requirement, their combined standard cash awards total €960 (approximately US$1,070). The amount represents a conditional combined calculation rather than an unconditional tournament-wide guarantee.

Prize Eligibility and Possible Increases

Each group must reach the six-player threshold for its standard cash prizes to apply. Moreover, Chessence may increase the prize amounts when participation levels justify additional awards. Therefore, larger groups can potentially offer more prize money than the standard amounts listed above.

The separate Saturday-night blitz tournament is an additional competition and is not included in this classical prize calculation.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The 16th Chessence Open comprises four separately paired competitions, allowing players of different strengths to participate in an appropriate rating category. The organizer uses German DWZ ratings and, where applicable, FIDE Elo ratings to determine eligibility.

All four sections receive DWZ evaluation. In addition, Chessence Masters, Premium Open A, and Premium Open B are submitted for FIDE Standard rating, while Premium Open C is evaluated for DWZ only.

👑 Chessence Masters

The Masters competition is intended for the strongest players in the tournament. Normally, players with a DWZ and/or FIDE Elo rating of at least 2000 enter this group. However, Chessence also allows competitors rated 1950 or higher to select the Masters section during registration.

Members of the Chessence Excellence program may also enter this group under the organizer’s membership provisions. The Masters section receives both national DWZ and international FIDE rating evaluation, making it suitable for experienced club competitors and players seeking strong classical opposition.

🔵 Chessence Premium Open A

Premium Open A is designed primarily for players with a DWZ rating from 1750 to 1999. The competition offers a structured environment for established club players who want to improve their national and international ratings while competing against opponents of similar strength.

Players with qualifying ratings from 1950 upward may choose between Premium Open A and the Masters section. This optional move provides ambitious participants with an opportunity to challenge stronger opponents while preserving a suitable rating-based competition for others.

🟠 Chessence Premium Open B

Premium Open B welcomes players with a DWZ rating from 1500 to 1749. This section provides five classical rounds against competitors within a defined playing-strength category, helping participants develop tournament experience and build their ratings.

Games count toward both DWZ and FIDE Standard rating. Consequently, this section can be particularly useful for club members working toward higher rating classifications or gaining additional experience in internationally rated classical events.

🟢 Chessence Premium Open C

Premium Open C is designed for developing competitors with a DWZ rating below 1500. The competition offers a formal five-round Swiss tournament for players building their over-the-board experience and establishing a stronger national rating record.

Unlike the three higher sections, Premium Open C counts toward DWZ rather than FIDE Standard rating. Additionally, Chessence requires every participant in this section to belong to an affiliated chess club by the start of the tournament.

Group Allocation and Adjustments

Chessence normally assigns players automatically using the rating information submitted through the registration form. If a participant has neither a DWZ nor a FIDE Elo rating, the Tournament Director determines the appropriate group.

The organizer aims to maintain at least 10 players in each section. Therefore, the Tournament Director may adjust individual assignments or combine groups when participation levels require it. These adjustments help maintain workable Swiss pairings and balanced competition conditions.

International Rating Requirements

Participants entering Chessence Masters, Premium Open A, or Premium Open B must have the appropriate FIDE registration because their games are submitted for FIDE Standard rating. Players who need to obtain their first registration should initiate the process at least two weeks before the event.

Premium Open C uses the German DWZ rating system. Club membership remains important for participating in the German tournament structure, and Chessence offers a route for joining SC Chessence 64 e.V.

📅 Schedule

The 16th Chessence Open runs from Friday, February 12, to Sunday, February 14, 2027. Two classical rounds take place on Friday and another two on Saturday, followed by the fifth and final round on Sunday morning. A separate Midnight Blitz Tournament starts on Saturday evening.

All times are local to Willingen, Germany, which observes Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) in February.

Attendance Confirmation

Tournament registration and attendance confirmation are separate requirements. Chessence requires registered competitors to confirm that they will attend, either in person or by telephone, during one of the official confirmation periods.

Players may confirm their presence on Thursday evening from 7:00–8:00 PM or Friday morning from 8:00–8:45 AM. If a participant fails to complete this step, the organizer cannot guarantee their inclusion in the first-round pairings.

This requirement also applies to competitors who have requested a Round 1 half-point bye. Consequently, participants arriving later on Friday should arrange the necessary telephone confirmation before the tournament begins.

📝 Registration

Chessence manages entry through its official tournament registration page. The standard participation fee is €49 for the five-round classical competition, regardless of whether a player enters Chessence Masters or one of the Premium Open groups.

The tournament has a maximum capacity of 80 players across all four sections. Registration therefore also depends on the available places within the event and the organizer’s group-allocation arrangements.

Online registration remains available until Thursday, February 11, at 7:00 PM. After this point, Chessence accepts new registrations only by telephone, using the tournament contact number published shortly before the event.

The registration period closes completely at 8:00 AM on Friday, February 12. Players who have already entered must also complete the separate attendance-confirmation process before the event begins.

Cancellation and Refunds

Competitors may cancel their tournament registration and obtain a refund of the entry fee until January 29, 2027. The organizer applies this deadline to the standard tournament entry rather than the hotel’s separate accommodation conditions.

Players should therefore consider their travel plans and tournament commitments before the refund period expires.

Chessence Membership Benefits

Members of the full Chessence Premium program and the Excellence program receive free tournament entry. Eligible members can log into their Chessence accounts and complete the registration process through the appropriate membership option.

Chessence operates these programs alongside its chess education activities, giving regular members access to training resources and selected tournament benefits.

Chess Club Membership

Every participant must belong to a chess club under the event’s membership requirements. In particular, Chessence states that Premium Open C participants cannot enter the tournament unless they have joined a club by the start of play.

Players without existing club membership may join SC Chessence 64 e.V. using the organizer’s club membership form or arrange membership at the tournament no later than the opening day.

Registration Information

The official registration form collects player information, rating details, club membership, tournament-section selection, and any requested first-round bye. It also allows participants to indicate their accommodation and meal requirements.

The organizer’s registration process is particularly convenient for visitors wishing to arrange both chess participation and the hotel’s special full-board package in one workflow.

♟️ Organizer

The event is organized by Chessence GmbH, the company behind the Chessence chess education platform and its growing series of over-the-board tournaments. Chessence combines structured chess training, online learning programs, and in-person competitions to serve players at different stages of their development.

Its tournament activities include recurring Chessence Open weekends in Willingen, typically featuring four rating-based sections and a five-round classical format. The series provides participants with opportunities to apply their training in rated competition while meeting other members of the Chessence chess community.

Chessence Tournament Series

The 16th Chessence Open follows earlier editions held during 2026, including the 13th Chessence Open in June, the 14th edition in August, and the 15th edition in December. The 2027 program also includes further Chessence Open tournaments in June, August, and December.

These recurring events create a predictable tournament program for German club players and visiting competitors. Moreover, the consistent combination of Masters and Premium groups allows players to identify suitable competitions according to their current rating.

Chessence and Chess Education

Chessence is associated with German Grandmaster and chess educator Niclas Huschenbeth. Its educational platform provides structured online lessons, training programs, and practical exercises aimed at improving playing strength.

The company’s approach connects theoretical training with practical tournament competition. Players can therefore use Chessence learning resources to work on their skills and then test their progress in formal over-the-board events such as the Chessence Open.

SC Chessence 64 e.V.

The tournament program also works alongside SC Chessence 64 e.V., which provides chess club membership opportunities. This helps players meet the membership conditions for participating in officially rated German chess competitions.

The arrangement is particularly relevant for developing players who have trained online but have not yet joined a traditional chess club. Through club membership and regular tournament participation, they can become more involved in organized German chess.

📍 Venue

Sauerland Stern Hotel

Kneippweg 1, 34508 Willingen (Upland), Hesse, Germany

The 16th Chessence Open takes place at the Sauerland Stern Hotel, a major hotel and conference property in Willingen. Its extensive meeting facilities make it suitable for hosting multi-section chess tournaments, while its guest rooms, restaurants, and leisure areas allow competitors to remain on-site throughout the weekend.

The property stands in central Willingen, near the railway station and the town’s recreational facilities. Its location is particularly convenient for participants who wish to avoid repeated transfers between their hotel and the playing venue.

Hotel and Tournament Facilities

Sauerland Stern Hotel offers substantial indoor event space, including conference rooms and facilities for large gatherings. Chessence uses the hotel as the setting for its recurring Open tournament series, allowing the four separate groups to compete within the same overall venue.

For participants staying at the hotel, the tournament accommodation package also includes meals. This arrangement can simplify the demanding Friday and Saturday schedules, when two classical rounds take place each day.

Leisure Facilities

The hotel includes a swimming pool, sauna facilities, a fitness area, restaurants, and bars. These facilities provide opportunities for players and accompanying family members to relax after games or spend time away from the playing room.

Willingen itself is a recognized holiday destination, with hiking trails, ski facilities, mountain scenery, and other outdoor attractions. As a result, the tournament can also fit into a short family trip to the Sauerland region.

Guests can also access the hotel’s spa and swimming pool, while its restaurant provides dining options. The hotel lies near Willingen railway station, making it particularly suitable for participants arriving by train.

Participants staying at Naturhotel Hochheide should plan their route to Sauerland Stern Hotel for each playing session, especially before the Friday and Saturday morning rounds.

🚆 How to Get There

Willingen (Upland) is located in the German state of Hesse, within the Sauerland holiday region. The town is accessible by regional railway services and major road connections from North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

The tournament venue is Sauerland Stern Hotel, Kneippweg 1, 34508 Willingen (Upland).

🚆 By Train to Willingen

Willingen has its own railway station, Willingen (Upland), which is located approximately 500 meters from Sauerland Stern Hotel. This makes railway travel an attractive option for participants who prefer not to drive.

Regional services connect Willingen with Brilon Wald and Korbach. The RB97 / RE97 corridor provides further connections toward other regional railway destinations, while long-distance travelers can change from ICE or intercity services at larger stations.

Players traveling from the Ruhr area can use railway services toward Brilon Wald and connect with trains serving Willingen. Those approaching from Kassel can travel toward Korbach before continuing to Willingen.

Rail schedules and connections are available through Deutsche Bahn.

🚄 From Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe

Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is a major German long-distance railway station served by ICE trains. It is approximately 70 kilometers from Willingen by the distance indicated in the hotel travel information.

Visitors arriving here can continue using regional rail connections toward Korbach and Willingen or arrange a road transfer. The railway route may involve a change of trains, so players should plan around the Friday morning registration deadline.

This station is particularly useful for international travelers arriving through Germany’s wider high-speed railway network.

✈️ From Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport

Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport is a regional airport serving the area around Paderborn and parts of the Sauerland. Sauerland Stern Hotel lists it as an airport option for guests traveling to Willingen.

Visitors arriving by air can continue to the tournament venue by taxi, private transfer, or suitable combinations of public transport. Because the airport and hotel are in separate locations, participants should arrange their onward journey before departure.

Airport information is available from Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport.

🚗 By Car

Drivers can reach Willingen through the regional road network connecting the Sauerland with Kassel, Dortmund, Brilon, and surrounding towns. The B251 is an important road connection for reaching Willingen from nearby areas.

From the south, drivers may approach via the A7 and A44 motorways, continuing toward Brilon and Willingen. From the Ruhr region, road access is also available through the motorway and regional highway network.

For the final approach, enter Kneippweg 1, 34508 Willingen (Upland) into the navigation system.

🅿️ Free Parking for Chessence Participants

Sauerland Stern Hotel introduced paid parking on July 15, 2026. However, Chessence has arranged an exemption for its tournament participants during 2026 and 2027, provided drivers complete the special registration procedure.

The hotel normally charges €5 per vehicle per calendar day for hotel guests and €25 for external visitors. Eligible Chessence tournament participants can instead obtain free parking authorization through the organizer’s dedicated QR code.

Free Parking Procedure

  1. Park your vehicle in the hotel parking area.
  2. Note the full license plate number.
  3. Obtain the Chessence parking QR code from the Tournament Office.
  4. Scan the QR code on the calendar day of arrival.
  5. Enter the license plate number and confirm the registration.

After successful registration, the parking authorization remains valid for seven days. Players staying longer must register again when required.

The QR code is intended for tournament participants and must not be shared with third parties. Failure to complete the registration correctly can result in additional charges, including a contractual penalty of €38 per calendar day and administrative fees.
