The 17th Chennai Open International Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2027 for Sakthi Group Dr. N. Mahalingam Trophy will take place from January 2–9, 2027 in Chennai, India. Organized by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association under the guidance of the All India Chess Federation, the tournament returns to Ramada by Wyndham Chennai Egmore for eight days of classical chess.

The international open is played over 10 Swiss rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The official regulations provide a total cash prize fund of ₹2,000,000, approximately $20,810, with ₹400,000 awarded to the tournament winner.

The venue is located in central Chennai near Egmore Railway Station. Titled players receive special entry and accommodation conditions, while registration for other participants remains open until December 27, 2026.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament is played over 10 rounds using the FIDE Swiss System and the applicable FIDE Laws of Chess.

Each player receives 90 minutes for the entire game plus a 30-second increment from move one.

The published default time is 15 minutes. A player arriving at the board after the permitted default time loses the game.

Players may not agree to a draw before each player has completed 30 moves.

The published tiebreak order is:

  1. Buchholz Cut 1
  2. Buchholz
  3. Sonneborn-Berger
  4. Direct Encounter
  5. Greater number of wins, including forfeits
  6. Number of wins with Black

Cash prizes are not shared in the event of a tie.

A player is eligible for one prize only, whichever is higher.

Applicable Indian income-tax regulations and TDS rules apply to prize payments.

The Chennai Open is conducted as a single international Grandmaster Open rather than separate rating sections.

Players compete together in the same 10-round Swiss tournament, while additional prizes are awarded within the published rating categories from 2000 to 2399.

The standard entry fee is ₹10,000 without lodging.

The organizer states that requests for additional entry-fee waivers will not be entertained.

Indian players must have valid AICF registration for 2026–2027 before the tournament registration deadline. Tamil Nadu players must also complete the applicable TNSCA registration.

🚆 How to Get There

Ramada by Wyndham Chennai Egmore is located close to Chennai Egmore Railway Station.

According to the organizer’s travel information, the venue is approximately:

ℹ️ Other Information

All electronic devices, including all types of wrist watches, are prohibited inside the playing hall. A player found carrying a prohibited electronic device may be declared to have lost the game.

A protest against a decision of the Chief Arbiter must be submitted in writing within one hour after completion of the game together with a fee of ₹3,000. The fee is refunded if the appeal is upheld.

The published tournament officials include B. Murugavel as Organising Secretary, P. Stephen Balasamy as Tournament Director and R. Anantharam as Technical Director.

The tournament is dedicated to the Sakthi Group Dr. N. Mahalingam Trophy, commemorating Dr. N. Mahalingam, former President of both the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and the All India Chess Federation and a long-time supporter of Indian chess.
