Brazil Chess Series – Floripa 2027 will bring ten days of international chess to Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, from January 22–31, 2027. The festival takes place primarily at Lira Tênis Clube in the city center and combines a major 10-round FIDE-rated Classical tournament with Rapid and Blitz competitions, school and team events, a women-only tournament, seminars and educational activities.

The main Standard tournament runs from January 23–31 with a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. It is valid for GM, WGM, IM and WIM norms and has a maximum capacity of 500 players. Alongside the Classical event, the program includes the Opening Blitz, BCS School, BCS Team, BCS Super Blitz and Brazil Chess Series – Queens. As a result, players can combine several rated formats during the same festival.

The organizer publishes R$116,000 in total prizes, approximately $22,210, including R$89,600 in the main Standard tournament and another R$26,400 in published prize value across the side events. The festival also receives financial support through the FIDE Open Aid Project. Registration uses several fee deadlines, while titled players, seniors and players with disabilities can qualify for special conditions under the official regulations.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The main tournament uses a 10-round Swiss system with Swiss-Manager. Each player receives 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one.

Competition Format Time Control
Standard 10-round Swiss 90+30
Opening Blitz 9-round Swiss 3+2
BCS School 6-round Swiss 10+5
BCS Team 7-round Swiss 10+5
BCS Super Blitz 11-round Swiss 3+2
BCS Queens 7-round Swiss 5+3

The Standard tournament uses national and international ratings. Meanwhile, the Rapid and Blitz events use the applicable FIDE Rapid or Blitz rating. When that rating is unavailable, the player’s FIDE Standard rating is used instead.

For the Standard event, tiebreaks are applied in this order: Direct Encounter, Buchholz Cut 2, Average Rating of Opponents, Buchholz Total, Sonneborn-Berger and Average of Opponents’ Buchholz. If players remain tied after all published criteria, the final order is determined by drawing lots.

Players may request up to three half-point byes, but only through Round 6. Zero-point byes may be requested for any round. All requests must be submitted before the relevant pairing is produced.

🏆 Prize Fund

The official regulations publish R$116,000 in total prizes, approximately $22,210 at the current exchange rate. The organizer itself describes the total as approximately USD 23,000.

The Standard tournament distributes R$89,600, while the competitive side events account for another R$26,400 in published prize value.

Side Events

Competition Published Prize Value
Opening Blitz R$3,200
BCS School R$3,200
BCS Team R$6,400
BCS Super Blitz R$10,200
Brazil Chess Series – Queens R$3,400
Total R$26,400

The prize structure differs between these events. In particular, the Opening Blitz, BCS School and BCS Team include entries to the BCS Super Blitz and trophies or medals as prizes, rather than simply distributing the full published value as cash.

The Super Blitz distributes cash prizes in Open, Women, U2000, U1700, Unrated, U20 and U18 classifications. Its Open champion receives R$2,000.

The women-only Brazil Chess Series – Queens distributes R$3,400 in cash prizes, including R$1,000 for first place, with cash awards through tenth place.

Cash prizes are not shared and are not cumulative. When a player qualifies for more than one award, the highest-value applicable prize takes precedence. Prize winners must attend the closing ceremony unless the organizer accepts a justified absence.

🚆 How to Get There

Lira Tênis Clube is particularly convenient for visitors because it sits in Centro, Florianópolis, close to the main urban bus terminal and within the central hotel district.

From Florianópolis International Airport – Hercílio Luz (FLN)

Floripa Airport is approximately 12 km from central Florianópolis. The most convenient direct options to the venue are Uber or taxi.

The airport officially supports Uber and has designated app-based pickup and drop-off points. In addition, the airport operates a 24-hour taxi rank at Boulevard 14/32. Depending on traffic, the drive between the airport and central Florianópolis generally takes around 20–30 minutes, although peak-hour congestion can increase the journey time.

Airport Bus to the Venue

The lowest-cost public transport option is Bus 431 – TICEN / Aeroporto, operated by Consórcio Fênix.

The line runs directly between Floripa Airport and TICEN – Terminal de Integração do Centro. Current published fares are:

Payment Method Fare
Cash / PIX / QR Code R$7.70
Tourist / VT card R$7.20
Citizen card R$6.20

At the airport, board the 431 service toward TICEN. Once the bus reaches TICEN, Lira Tênis Clube is extremely close: the nearest TICEN stop is approximately 180 metres from the club, around a 3-minute walk.

Players returning to the airport can board Line 431 from TICEN, Platform B, Box 13. Since timetables depend on traffic and are updated periodically, check the current Consórcio Fênix schedule before travelling.

From Terminal Rodoviário Rita Maria

Players arriving in Florianópolis by long-distance coach will normally use Terminal Rodoviário Rita Maria, the city’s principal intercity bus terminal.

The terminal is already in Centro, close to the tournament area. From there, participants can continue to Lira Tênis Clube by a short taxi or rideshare journey. Walking is also practical for travelers with light luggage because both locations are within the central district.

This makes intercity coach travel particularly convenient for players arriving from other cities in Santa Catarina or southern Brazil.

Arriving by Car

Drivers should navigate directly to:

Lira Tênis Clube – Rua Felipe Schmidt, 636, Centro, Florianópolis, SC 88010-001.

The venue is in a busy central district, so players should allow extra time during weekday traffic. Anyone staying in an official hotel should also check the hotel’s parking conditions before arrival and consider leaving the vehicle there during playing sessions.

International and Domestic Flights

Florianópolis International Airport has domestic and international services. Players without a convenient direct flight to FLN can connect through one of Brazil’s larger hubs before continuing to Florianópolis.

Since Standard Round 1 starts at 20:00 on January 23, main-event players have more arrival flexibility than at tournaments with a morning first round. Nevertheless, arriving on January 22 or earlier is preferable for international travelers and for players who also want to participate in the Opening Blitz at 19:00 on January 22.

ℹ️ Other Information

The tournament is valid for GM, WGM, IM and WIM norms under the applicable FIDE regulations.

The organization provides the boards, pieces and clocks at every board. Players may not replace the official tournament equipment. If electronic scoresheets are used, the organizer will provide them.

The Standard tournament has a 60-minute default time. An unjustified forfeit removes the player from subsequent pairings unless the absence is properly explained to the organizer before the end of the round.

During games, players may not carry mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets or other prohibited communication devices. A violation results in loss of the game. The organizer plans to provide a storage area for prohibited devices at a cost of R$5 per round.

An Appeals Committee will be formed during the Technical Meeting. Appeals must be submitted in writing within 30 minutes after the relevant game or official decision, together with a USD 100 appeal fee. The fee is refunded when the appeal is upheld in whole or in part.

Results, photographs and tournament information will be published through the official Brazil Chess Series channels. Games and event coverage are also planned through the organizer’s online broadcast platforms.

Before travelling, participants should recheck their registration status, FIDE ID, tournament entry and the relevant Chess-Results list. Since Brazil Chess Series – Floripa 2027 contains several separate rated competitions, players entering more than one format should verify each starting list individually.
