♟️ About Brazil Chess Series

Brazil Chess Series (BCS) is a Brazilian chess-event franchise based in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. It was created to combine high-level competitive chess with tourism, culture, education, and activities for players and accompanying families. The series operates international-standard tournaments while also building a broader festival program around each main competition. The first Brazil Chess Series event was launched in Florianópolis in January 2025. The project is led by IO/IA Kaiser Luiz Mafra, an experienced International Organizer and International Arbiter. The central organizing team also includes AO/IA Luciano Rietter, AO/FA Liziane Nathália Vicenzi, FA Amanda Paul Dull, and FA Daniel Brandão Mariani, together with additional arbiters, technical staff, media specialists, and event professionals. BCS works closely with Brazilian and international chess institutions. Its events are registered with the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez (CBX) and FIDE when applicable, while major editions have included FIDE-rated competitions, title-norm opportunities, arbiter education, international organizer activities, women’s chess initiatives, and large-scale online coverage.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

The flagship event is Brazil Chess Series – Floripa, held annually at Lira Tênis Clube in central Florianópolis. The festival combines a major classical Open with several rapid and blitz tournaments. In addition, its program includes team chess, school competitions, women-only events, professional seminars, academic activities, and side events. The inaugural BCS Floripa 2025 established the format as a ten-round international tournament with a substantial prize fund and participants from Brazil and abroad. The series expanded significantly in its second year. The 2026 Standard tournament recorded 542 players representing 19 federations, including 101 titled players across the GM, WGM, IM, WIM, FM, WFM, CM, and WCM categories. The Brazil Chess Series – Floripa 2027 continues that growth from January 22–31, 2027. Its main Standard event is a ten-round FIDE-rated Swiss tournament and is valid for GM, WGM, IM, and WIM norms. The wider festival also includes Opening Blitz, BCS School, BCS Team, BCS Super Blitz, and the women-only Brazil Chess Series – Queens tournament. The 2027 edition offers R$116,000 in published prizes across the festival. Moreover, the event receives financial support through the FIDE Open Aid Project. This combination of classical, rapid, and blitz competition allows participants to play several rated formats within one international chess festival.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Youth chess has become an important part of the Brazil Chess Series structure. BCS School gives younger players a dedicated competition within the Floripa festival and is divided into U8, U11, U14, and U17 groups. The event uses a rapid format and introduces young competitors to the same professional tournament environment used for the larger international competitions. The main Standard tournament also recognizes a broad range of junior categories. Awards are provided for U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, and U20, with separate recognition for Open and Girls classifications. Therefore, young participants can compete in the main international field while still having age-specific competitive goals. BCS also connects player development with education for tournament officials. Its festival program has included a CBX Arbiter Course, a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar, and academic congress activities. The 2027 schedule additionally includes a planned FIDE International Organizer Seminar, subject to final FIDE confirmation. These activities extend the project beyond player competition alone. By training arbiters and organizers, supporting youth tournaments, and providing educational sessions alongside international chess, Brazil Chess Series contributes to the wider tournament infrastructure needed for long-term chess development.

♀️ Women’s Chess & International Initiatives

Women’s chess is a recurring element of the Brazil Chess Series program. The main Standard tournament includes a substantial separate women’s prize classification, while female competitors remain part of the same international Open field. BCS also stages activities specifically designed to strengthen women’s participation in chess. The festival hosts the South American Women’s Chess Meeting, which reaches its fifth edition in 2027. In addition, Brazil Chess Series – Queens provides a separate women-only FIDE-rated blitz tournament. These activities combine competitive opportunities with meetings and community-building initiatives. International participation is equally central to the series. The 2026 Floripa event attracted players from across South America as well as Europe, North America, and other regions. Furthermore, the presence of Grandmasters, International Masters, international arbiters, and overseas delegations gives local Brazilian players regular access to a highly international field.

📚 History & Development

Brazil Chess Series began in 2025 as a new tournament franchise designed around a sports-tourism-cultural concept. The first Floripa edition established Florianópolis as its main base and used the historic Lira Tênis Clube as the playing venue. From the beginning, the project combined the classical tournament with side events rather than operating as a single standalone Open. The series expanded rapidly. By 2026, the main tournament had grown to more than 500 players, while the festival program included team chess, school chess, blitz competitions, professional courses, and women’s initiatives. Online broadcasting and extensive digital coverage also became an important part of the event. For 2027, BCS has expanded the prize structure to R$116,000 and retained a ten-day festival format. The program now combines elite and amateur competition, junior development, women’s chess, seminars, organizer education, and international participation. As a result, Brazil Chess Series has developed from a new tournament concept into a recurring international chess festival with a broad competitive and educational program.
