♟️ About L’Échiquier Cappellois

L’Échiquier Cappellois is an established chess club based in Cappelle-la-Grande, northern France, near Dunkirk. The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and plays an important role in competitive, junior, educational, and international chess in the Hauts-de-France region. The FFE currently lists 74 Licence A and 60 Licence B members, while the club’s leading team competes in Nationale 1.

The club is led by Alexandre Feryn, who serves as President and is also an International Arbiter. The current executive team includes Véronique Marchyllie as Vice-President, Didier Couché as Treasurer, and Valérie Feryn as Secretary. L’Échiquier Cappellois also has a structured coaching and arbitration team supporting both competitive players and developing juniors.

The association is closely connected with the chess identity of Cappelle-la-Grande. In addition to regular club activities, team competition, coaching, and local tournaments, it organizes one of France’s best-known international chess events: the Open International de Cappelle-la-Grande.

🏆 Open International de Cappelle-la-Grande

The Open International de Cappelle-la-Grande was first held in 1985 and has developed into one of the most recognizable large open tournaments in European chess. Over the decades, the event has attracted hundreds of players from dozens of countries, including Grandmasters, International Masters, ambitious juniors, and club players.

The tournament’s format is notable because all participants compete in one large open section, creating opportunities for amateur players to face titled opponents when their results justify it. The event is FIDE-rated and regularly provides opportunities for title norms.

The 2026 edition attracted more than 560 players, the highest participation level recorded by the tournament in a decade. This strong response led the club to open registration for the 2027 edition particularly early.

The 43e Open International de Cappelle-la-Grande 2027 takes place from February 27 to March 5 at the Palais des Arts et des Loisirs. The nine-round classical tournament offers €12,000 in prizes, including €2,000 for first place, and is officially listed by the French Chess Federation as a norm tournament.

⚡ Rapid Chess & Other Competitions

Alongside the classical Open, L’Échiquier Cappellois organizes the Rapide International de Cappelle-la-Grande. The 10th edition is scheduled immediately after the 2027 Open and offers a €5,000 prize fund over nine rounds of rapid chess.

Throughout the season, the club also organizes blitz tournaments, rapid competitions, club challenges, internal events, and officially rated competitions.

L’Échiquier Cappellois participates extensively in French team chess. Its teams compete at several levels, including Nationale 1, Nationale 3, regional, and departmental divisions, while the club also fields women’s and junior teams.

🌱 Junior Chess & Education

Youth chess is a major part of the club’s activities. L’Échiquier Cappellois provides structured training for beginners and experienced juniors, with several coaches contributing to the club’s educational program.

The club regularly hosts school chess championships and other youth events in Cappelle-la-Grande. In January 2026, for example, it hosted departmental school championship events for both primary schools and secondary schools.

Its young players also participate in departmental, regional, and national youth competitions. The club maintains dedicated junior team structures and uses its local events to provide younger players with experience in competitive chess.

The educational structure is supported by qualified coaches and several federation-certified and international arbiters, allowing the club to combine training, competition, and tournament organization within the same organization.

🏅 Development & Chess Tradition

Cappelle-la-Grande has become internationally associated with chess largely through the work of L’Échiquier Cappellois and its volunteers.

The International Open has historically attracted exceptionally large fields. In 2005, for example, 590 players from 52 countries participated, including 78 Grandmasters and 62 International Masters. Several players achieved GM norms during that edition.

The club has continued to modernize the tournament while maintaining its traditional large-open format. Current editions feature live game transmission, electronic result management, international flags, standardized wooden boards, and dedicated analysis and spectator areas.

Today, L’Échiquier Cappellois combines a strong local club structure with one of France’s most established international chess events. Its activities cover junior development, team chess, arbitration, school chess, recreational play, and major FIDE-rated tournaments.
