Échiquier de Franconville – Val Parisis Échecs is a major chess organization based in Franconville, Val-d’Oise, France, serving a much wider network of communities across the Val Parisis area.

The club remains officially registered with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) as Échiquier de Franconville, while its current public identity is Val Parisis Échecs. Its activities extend beyond Franconville to locations including Sannois, Cormeilles-en-Parisis, Herblay, Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, Eaubonne, Beauchamp, Taverny, Montigny-lès-Cormeilles, Le Plessis-Bouchard and other nearby communities.

The organization has one of the largest registered playing bases in the region. The FFE currently lists 291 Licence A and 506 Licence B players, for almost 800 federation-registered members. The club also holds the FFE Club Formateur and Label Féminin distinctions.

Jérôme Appendino serves as President of Échiquier de Franconville. Nicolas Jactel is Secretary and a principal club contact, while Sophie Bigotte serves as Treasurer. Yann Marec is also closely involved in tournament organization and team competition.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization is a major part of the club’s identity. Échiquier de Franconville runs a particularly dense annual calendar covering rapid chess, blitz, classical team competition, youth events, family tournaments, training events and more informal chess formats.

Its best-known open competition is the Open Rapide de Franconville, which reached its 37th edition in September 2026. The FIDE-rated event was organized over nine rounds and offered a prize fund of approximately €3,000, including general, women’s, senior, veteran, youth and rating-category prizes.

The club also runs the recurring Rapide FIDE du Vendredi de Franconville series. These compact Friday-evening tournaments use two playing groups, typically an Elite section and an Accession section, allowing players of different rating levels to compete during the same evening.

The 29e Rapide FIDE du Vendredi de Franconville 2026 takes place on November 6 at the Château du Cadet de Vaux. Both sections are played over five rounds at 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move, with a shared maximum capacity of 50 players. Yann Marec serves as arbiter.

Franconville also organizes the popular Blitz-Pizza tournament series, Chess960 evenings, team events and other formats designed to combine serious chess with a strong social club atmosphere.

🌱 Junior Chess & Training

Youth development is one of the strongest parts of Val Parisis Échecs.

The FFE gives the club its Club Formateur designation, recognizing its structured approach to instruction and player development. The organization operates chess courses for young players and adults across several municipalities rather than concentrating all activities in Franconville.

For the 2026/27 season, the club also offers online training at several levels, including Perfectionnement, Compétitions and Elite, giving ambitious players additional opportunities to train outside regular club sessions.

The club organizes the Challenge Jeunes du Val Parisis, a series of events for developing young players from its various local sections. These competitions are designed to give beginners practical tournament experience in a friendly environment before progressing toward more demanding FFE-rated events.

Its competitive youth structure is particularly strong: for the 2026/27 season, the club fields one team in Nationale 1 Jeunes and another in Nationale 2 Jeunes.

🥇 Team Chess & Competitive Strength

Échiquier de Franconville has a substantial presence in the French national team system.

For the 2026/27 season, Franconville 1 competes in Nationale 1, Franconville 2 in Nationale 2, while three additional teams compete in Nationale 4. The club also maintains Nationale 1 and Nationale 2 youth teams.

Women’s chess is another important part of the club’s program. Its women’s team competed in Nationale 1 Féminine, and the FFE officially awards the club its Label Féminin.

The club also maintains extensive participation in the Val-d’Oise Friday team championship. During the 2025/26 season it entered seven teams, winning two group titles and achieving five podium finishes. A total of 47 players represented the club across that competition.

📚 History & Development

Échiquier de Franconville has a long competitive history. Archived club material shows an already well-developed structure in the early 2000s, with youth training, adult coaching, National 3, National 4 and National 5 teams, Coupe de France participation and internal competitions. Training at that time included sessions led by FIDE Master Eric Birmingham and Grandmaster Valentin Lukov.

Over the following decades, the organization expanded well beyond its original Franconville base. The present Val Parisis Échecs structure now connects chess activities across numerous municipalities while continuing to use Franconville as a major competitive and organizational centre.

The combination of almost 800 FFE-registered players, national-level adult, junior and women’s teams, extensive instruction, regular FIDE tournaments and a multi-city network gives the organization an unusually broad chess program.
