Metrópole Xadrez Clube (MXC) is a historic chess club based in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Founded in 1937, the club has maintained a continuous presence in the city's chess community for decades. Its activities combine competitive tournaments, regular club chess, school events, training opportunities, and officially rated competitions. The club operates from its headquarters in the Centro Histórico of Porto Alegre. Metrópole states that it has maintained its own social headquarters since 1956, giving the organization a permanent base for tournaments and everyday chess activities. The club is normally open from Monday to Friday and welcomes both members and visiting players. Waldir José Rabuske serves as President of Metrópole Xadrez Clube. The current board also includes Tadeu Fernando Nunes da Silva as Vice-President, Iran Bayer as Technical Director, Camila Majerkowski as Director of Arbitration, and Itamar Machado as Director of Institutional Relations.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization is one of Metrópole Xadrez Clube's main activities. Its calendar includes classical, rapid, blitz, and school competitions, many of which are registered for both FIDE and CBX rating. The club also regularly publishes its tournaments through Chess-Results and the Brazilian national chess system. One of its recurring competitions is the Copa Francisco Trois. The 5ª Copa Francisco Trois FIDE–CBX 2026 is scheduled for November 19–22, 2026 at the club's Porto Alegre headquarters. The seven-round standard tournament is submitted for FIDE and CBX rating and has a published prize fund of R$5,000. Metrópole also organizes the long-running Copa Metrópole de Xadrez Rápido Escolar. The series reached its 15th edition in 2026, with several stages during the year. In addition, the club's 2026 program includes open rapid tournaments, blitz events, and the Porto Alegre Open.

🌱 Junior & School Chess

Junior development has long formed part of Metrópole Xadrez Clube's activities. Its school rapid series gives children and teenagers regular opportunities to compete in organized chess while gaining experience in rated tournaments. The club has repeatedly highlighted the participation of school-age players in its events. Its competition structure allows younger players to move from school tournaments into open competitions and other events within the Brazilian chess system. Through these activities, Metrópole combines competitive chess with grassroots development. Its school competitions remain an established part of the annual tournament calendar and provide younger players with repeated opportunities to develop tournament experience.
