Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club is a historic chess club based in Hastings, East Sussex, England. Established in 1882, it has played an important role in the development of organized chess in Hastings for more than 140 years. The club owns its premises at Pelton House, 2 Cornwallis Terrace, close to Hastings railway station. It participates in Sussex chess competitions and maintains an active program of club tournaments, league matches, weekend congresses, rapid chess, and junior activities. The club runs chess throughout the year for players of different ages and strengths. Its internal program includes winter and summer competitions, while Friday club nights provide regular opportunities for rapid and social chess. In addition, Hastings & St Leonards operates a dedicated Junior Club for players aged five to eighteen. The club also hosts ECF-rated weekend tournaments and remains closely connected with Hastings’ internationally significant chess tradition. Alan Hustwayte serves as President, while Mark Brougham is Chairman. For the club’s weekend tournaments, Marc A Bryant is a principal operational contact and regularly handles entries and tournament administration. During 2026, the club has maintained a particularly active schedule, including several weekend events, an Easter Rapid, Sussex team competition, and the upcoming Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament on October 17–18.

📜 History and Chess Tradition

The club was founded after a public meeting held in Hastings on June 28, 1882. It soon developed into an ambitious chess organization and began arranging matches against strong London clubs, county competition, exhibitions, and chess festivals. This early activity helped create the environment that produced the famous Hastings 1895 tournament. The event brought together many of the strongest players in the world and was won by Harry Nelson Pillsbury. Emanuel Lasker, Wilhelm Steinitz, Mikhail Chigorin, Siegbert Tarrasch, and other leading masters competed. Hastings later developed one of the strongest chess traditions in Britain. The separate Hastings International Chess Congress continues that wider tradition today. However, Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club has its own year-round identity, membership, competitions, premises, and tournament program.

♜ Club and Team Chess

The club organizes a substantial program of internal competitions. Its winter schedule includes the Club Championship, Pelton Cup, and Rush Cup, while the summer season features tournaments such as the Anslow Cup, Bradley Martin Cup, Winser Knockout Trophy, and Dent Cup. Team chess also remains an important part of club life. Hastings competes within Sussex chess and has fielded teams in league and knockout events. The 2025–26 season produced a notable result in the Paul Watson Trophy. Hastings reached the final for the first time in the club’s history after previously never progressing beyond the opening round. The team ultimately finished runner-up to East Grinstead in May 2026.

🎓 Junior and Community Chess

The Hastings & St Leonards Junior Club operates during school terms and welcomes young players from five to eighteen years old. The program caters both to complete beginners and to juniors who already play competitively. Mark Brougham and Keith Hossack lead the junior activity. Experienced club members also contribute instruction and practical advice. As a result, young players can learn the game in the same permanent chess environment used by the senior club. For the autumn 2026 term, junior sessions resumed on September 4 and run on Friday evenings. The program offers an accessible route from learning the rules to regular competitive chess.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club regularly organizes compact weekend tournaments at its Cornwallis Terrace premises. These events normally use a five-round format and attract both club members and visiting players. During 2026, the club scheduled several such tournaments. These included an U1800 weekend in April, an Open weekend in June, an U2000 tournament in August, and the forthcoming U1900 tournament in October. The club also organized its traditional Easter Rapid on April 6, 2026. Twenty-four players took part, and Mark Rich won the Bourne Trophy. Consequently, the club’s calendar combines standardplay congresses with rapid chess, internal events, junior activity, and team competition.

🌟 Hastings Club Weekend U1900 2026

The Hastings Club Weekend U1900 Chess Tournament is scheduled for October 17–18, 2026 at the club’s own premises. The event uses a five-round format with a time control of 100 minutes plus a 15-second increment per move. Entry is limited to approximately 24 players, creating the compact club-congress format used in several Hastings weekend events. The tournament offers prizes for the top three finishers as well as a grading prize for players under 1700. Marc A Bryant handles entries and serves as the published organizer contact for the event.
