Meuselwitzer Schachverein 1921 e.V. is a chess club based in Meuselwitz, Thuringia, Germany, with more than a century of organized chess activity. Founded in 1921, the club serves players from Meuselwitz and the wider Altenburger Land region. It combines regular training, competitive team chess, tournament organization, school chess, and community activities for children and adults. Its permanent club and training rooms are located at the Schüler-Jugend-Freizeitzentrum (SJFZ) Meuselwitz. The club’s official postal address is Schulweg 6, 04617 Starkenberg, Germany.

Youth development has become one of the club’s defining strengths. Meuselwitz operates several junior training groups, school-chess activities, U12 and U16 teams, and dedicated programs for young beginners. At the same time, adults compete from local leagues through the Thüringenliga, while the women’s team plays in the Frauen-Regionalliga Süd-Ost. The club also organizes events ranging from the Schnaudertal Open and International Altenburg Chess Days to family tournaments, youth competitions, rapid chess, and Chess960/Freestyle events.

Torsten Kohl serves as President of Meuselwitzer Schachverein 1921 e.V., supported by Vice President Jens Schmidt and Treasurer Anke Kohl. Frank Große coordinates the club’s extensive youth program and also serves as press officer and tournament director for several events. The club entered the 2026–2027 season with nine teams, while its current calendar remains particularly active. Upcoming events include the Stadtfestpokal Meuselwitz on September 5, 2026 and the Open Thuringian Chess960/Freestyle Championship on September 19, 2026.

📜 More Than 100 Years of Chess

The club traces its organized history to 1921 and has remained part of the sporting life of Meuselwitz for more than a century. Its historical records include an early Thuringian team championship success in 1943 and a sustained period of youth development during the modern era.

Between 2001 and 2011, membership and junior activity expanded significantly. Young players from the club began qualifying for Thuringian and German championships, while the club continued to strengthen its competitive structure.

Today, Meuselwitz combines this long tradition with a distinctly modern emphasis on training, safeguarding, volunteer involvement, and structured opportunities for children to progress from their first lessons into competitive chess.

♜ Team Chess

For the 2026–2027 season, Meuselwitzer Schachverein fields nine teams across women’s, adult, and youth competition.

The first team begins its second consecutive season in the Thüringenliga, competing against some of the strongest club teams in the state. The second team plays in the Bezirksliga, while two additional adult and development teams compete in the Kreisliga.

The club’s women’s team enters its third season in the Frauen-Regionalliga Süd-Ost after finishing second in the previous season. Its 2026–2027 opponents include teams from Gera, Leipzig, Rodewisch, and Bad Königshofen.

Youth team chess is equally extensive. Meuselwitz fields one U16 team and three U12 teams, providing a clear pathway from introductory training into organized competition.

🎓 Youth and Girls’ Chess

Junior development produced several major achievements during the 2025–2026 season. Club players Sophia Scheiding, Gabriela Ignatova, Victoria Sniegowski, and Amalia Sniegowski were members of the team that won the 2026 German Girls’ School Chess Championship.

Moreover, Richard Sniegowski won the Thuringian U16 individual title, while Gabriela Ignatova became Thuringian U16 Girls’ Champion.

In August 2026, the club launched a new dedicated girls’ program titled “Schach ist Mädchensache!”. German championship-winning team captain Sophia Scheiding leads the weekly group. The project receives support through the German Chess Federation’s Girls’ and Women’s Chess 2026 funding program.

🌍 Tournament Organization

The club expanded its tournament program considerably in 2026. From April 3–6, Meuselwitz and Schachclub Altenburg jointly organized the inaugural International Altenburg Chess Days at the Goldener Pflug in Altenburg.

The seven-round classical Open received both FIDE Elo and DWZ rating and attracted 66 players from three federations. A separate U14 youth tournament ran alongside the main competition, reinforcing the event’s combination of adult and junior chess.

From May 15–17, 2026, the club staged the 5th Schnaudertal Open in Wintersdorf. The five-round Swiss tournament continued an established series designed for club players of different ages and playing strengths.

The club also hosted the Thuringian U12 Team Championship in June 2026, welcoming 12 teams from across the state.

⚡ Rapid, Community and Freestyle Chess

Meuselwitz regularly brings chess outside conventional league competition. In August 2026, its family tournament at the Altenburger Spielefestival attracted 23 family teams and 46 players, pairing relatives together in a five-round competition.

The Stadtfestpokal Meuselwitz 2026, scheduled for September 5, will be an open rapid tournament played during the city’s “Tag der Vereine.” The format consists of five rounds at 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, with no entry fee.

Two weeks later, on September 19, 2026, the club will host the Open Thuringian Chess960/Freestyle Championship in its Meuselwitz club rooms. The open competition uses a rapid time control and a newly randomized starting position before every round.
