Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs is a chess club and tournament organizer based in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Lower Austria. Affiliated with the Lower Austrian Chess Federation (Niederösterreichischer Schachverband), the club promotes chess across the Ybbstal region through regular club evenings, structured training, rated competition, public chess activities, and international tournaments. Its stated mission is to make chess accessible to players of all ages, from complete beginners and recreational players to ambitious tournament competitors.

The club has developed an increasingly visible tournament program under the Waidhofen Chess Masters brand. This series combines different competitive formats, including FIDE-rated blitz, rapid, and standard chess. In addition, Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs organizes training sessions, supports local chess initiatives, participates in Lower Austrian team competition, and works with regional partners to bring chess into distinctive public venues such as the Bene headquarters and Schloss Rothschild.

IO Giorgio Gugler is the current Chairman (Obmann) and principal organizer of Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs. He is also a FIDE International Organizer, FIDE Instructor, and active tournament official. The club had a particularly important year in 2026, launching the Waidhofen Chess Masters with a successful international Blitz Trophy in June. Its next major event is the 2nd Waidhofen Chess Masters – Rapid Schloss Rothschild Open, scheduled for November 14, 2026, while the club also enters the 2026–2027 Lower Austrian team-league season.

🏛️ Chess in Waidhofen an der Ybbs

Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs provides a local home for both recreational and competitive chess in the “City of Towers.”

The club organizes chess evenings and training sessions, creating opportunities for experienced players as well as newcomers who want to learn tournament chess. Activities include practical play, notation training, and preparation for rated competition.

Its regular playing venue is connected with Das Schloss an der Eisenstraße in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, while the club’s registered headquarters are located on Ybbsitzerstraße.

The organization is officially recognized within the Mostviertel section of the Lower Austrian Chess Federation.

🌟 Waidhofen Chess Masters

The Waidhofen Chess Masters is the club’s flagship tournament project and was launched in 2026.

The concept combines blitz, rapid, and standard chess within a broader annual tournament series. The aim is to bring strong Austrian and international players to Waidhofen while also giving local and regional competitors access to professionally organized FIDE-rated events.

The inaugural Waidhofen Chess Masters – Bene Blitz Trophy took place on June 12, 2026 at the Bene headquarters in Waidhofen.

The tournament attracted 55 players from four countries and featured several strong titled players, including Austrian Grandmaster Markus Ragger.

IM Jakob Postlmayer won the event with an outstanding 10/11, while GM Markus Ragger and IM Konstantin Peyrer both finished on 9.5 points.

The event combined high-level competitive chess with modern presentation, live boards, dedicated tournament branding, and cooperation with local businesses and public institutions.

⚡ Schloss Rothschild Rapid Open

The second major event in the 2026 Waidhofen Chess Masters series is the Rapid Schloss Rothschild Open, scheduled for November 14, 2026.

The tournament will take place in the Kristallsaal of Schloss Rothschild in the center of Waidhofen an der Ybbs.

Players will compete over seven Swiss-system rounds at 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move. The tournament will count toward the FIDE Rapid rating.

IO Giorgio Gugler serves as Tournament Director, while IA Kristof Kaweh is the appointed Chief Arbiter.

The event continues the club’s strategy of presenting competitive chess in prominent local venues while connecting international tournament play with the cultural identity of Waidhofen.

♜ Team and Competitive Chess

Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs also participates in the official Lower Austrian team-league system.

For the 2026–2027 season, the club is entered in the 2. Klasse Mostviertel West. Its scheduled league opponents include clubs and teams from Amstetten, Pöchlarn, Loosdorf, Böhlerwerk, Mauer, and other communities across the Mostviertel region.

This league participation gives club members regular classical team competition alongside the faster formats featured in the Waidhofen Chess Masters.

The club’s competitive environment includes experienced tournament players as well as developing members, helping connect local club chess with the broader Austrian rating system.

🌳 Community and Chess Development

Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs also promotes chess outside traditional tournament venues.

In summer 2026, the club worked with the City of Waidhofen to establish a new outdoor park-chess facility at Parkbad Waidhofen. The initiative allows visitors and local residents to play chess in a casual public setting.

The club also promotes supervised chess, training opportunities, online chess activities, and cooperation with other chess organizations.

Through these projects, Schachburg Waidhofen/Ybbs combines competitive tournament organization with community outreach and aims to strengthen chess throughout Waidhofen and the wider Ybbstal region.
