SV Babelsberg 03 e.V. – Abteilung Schach is the chess department of the multi-sport club SV Babelsberg 03 in Potsdam, Germany. The section competes within the Brandenburg and German chess structures and provides classical team chess, individual tournaments, rapid and blitz events, junior training, beginner instruction, and community chess. Its distinctive home is the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion, better known locally as the KarLi.

The chess department itself was founded in 2016 by Oliver Thau. It developed quickly within a sports club best known for football. By early 2025, the section reported more than 50 active members, making it the largest non-football department of SV Babelsberg 03. Moreover, its competitive program had already expanded to several adult teams and a youth squad competing at high regional and national levels.

Uwe Kaminski currently leads the chess department. He joined the section in 2016 and took over its leadership in 2023. Kaminski coordinates tournaments, team activity, communications, and many of the section’s public chess projects. In addition, the German chess league directory currently lists him as the official contact for SV Babelsberg 03.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team competition represents a major part of the chess section’s activity. During the 2024–2025 season, the first team competed in the 2. Oberliga Ost, while the second and third teams played in Brandenburg’s regional structure. The club also fielded additional teams in the Havellandliga.

The 2025–2026 season produced important changes. The first team fought for survival in the 2. Oberliga Ost but ultimately dropped to the Landesliga. Meanwhile, the second team won promotion from the Landesklasse and also reached the Landesliga.

Therefore, for 2026–2027, both Babelsberg’s first and second teams compete in the Brandenburg Landesliga. The third team continues in Regionalliga Nord, while additional squads give more club members access to team competition.

The chess department also has a strong cup tradition. SV Babelsberg 03 won the Brandenburg Landespokal in 2025, which qualified the club for the Deutsche Pokal-Mannschaftsmeisterschaft. In January 2026, the KarLi itself hosted a national cup preliminary group, bringing teams from different parts of Germany to Potsdam.

🧒 Junior Chess and Training

Youth development has grown into another major pillar of SV Babelsberg 03 chess. The section runs regular beginner and junior training while also organizing its own tournament series for children and teenagers.

Training takes place inside the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion, normally in the VIP room or media working room. Players work through games, tactical exercises, and other chess material while retaining time for practical play. Moreover, newcomers can attend a free trial session before deciding whether to join the club.

The section organizes a recurring rapid tournament series for children and young players. The 2026 calendar includes the Osterhasenturnier, Sommerturnier, Herbstturnier, and Weihnachtsmannturnier. These events use separate age groups and create regular competitive opportunities throughout the year.

In July 2026, the Sommerturnier again brought together U8–U21 players while a parallel Elo-rated competition gave adults and stronger players another option. Consequently, the section links introductory training with increasingly formal tournament chess.

The club has also competed in high-level youth team chess. In recent seasons, its U20 team reached the Jugendbundesliga Ost, the highest youth team division in that regional structure.

🏆 Tournament Organization at the KarLi

The Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion gives the chess department an unusual tournament setting. Rather than operating from a conventional chess clubhouse, SV Babelsberg 03 frequently uses the football stadium’s VIP and media facilities for rated chess.

One recurring project is the KarLi-Turnier. The second edition took place in June 2026 and used small four-player groups arranged largely by playing strength. Players competed in classical games, while faster side events followed when schedules allowed.

The club also organizes rated rapid and blitz competitions around Christmas and New Year. These include Schnellschach unterm Weihnachtsbaum and the Jahresabschlussblitzturnier.

Moreover, SV Babelsberg 03 has used the stadium for major team events. The January 2026 German team cup preliminary round demonstrated that the facility can host competitions involving visiting clubs from around Germany.

This combination of stadium infrastructure, club volunteers, experienced arbiters, and regular tournament activity has made event organization an increasingly visible part of the chess section’s identity.

🌟 Potsdamer Weihnachtsopen

The Potsdamer Weihnachtsopen is the section’s principal year-end tournament project.

The tournament has a much longer history than the Babelsberg chess section itself. Potsdam had already hosted 37 editions before the event entered a lengthy interruption. After approximately 12 years without the tournament, SV Babelsberg 03 revived the series in December 2025 as the 38th Potsdamer Weihnachtsopen.

The revival brought the tournament into the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion and placed it under the organizational responsibility of the Babelsberg chess section. The event combined classical chess with rapid and blitz side tournaments as part of a wider year-end Potsdam chess program.

SV Babelsberg 03 now organizes the 39. Potsdamer Weihnachtsopen from December 27–30, 2026. The tournament again takes place in the VIP room of the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion and has capacity for 60 players.

Players compete over seven Swiss rounds. The time control gives 60 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from move one. In addition, the competition is submitted for FIDE Elo and DWZ rating.

The organizers advertise a €1,500 prize fund when at least 50 players participate. First place receives €400, while further overall, rating, women’s, youth, and senior prizes complete the award structure.

Uwe Kaminski serves as Tournament Director, while FA Rolf Trenner handles arbitration. Entry fees go directly to SV Babelsberg 03 e.V., which further confirms that the chess department and its parent association are the actual tournament organizers.

🤝 Chess and Community Activity in Potsdam

The chess department also takes part in community events beyond formal federation tournaments. In June 2026, members participated in the Toleranzfest on Babelsberg’s Sandscholle, where visitors could play chess on a large outdoor set.

The section also supported the Faszination Schach project when Grandmaster Sebastian Siebrecht and his team visited the Stern-Center Potsdam in June 2026. The initiative introduced large numbers of children and young people to chess through interactive activities.

These activities complement the section’s regular training and tournament calendar. At the same time, they connect chess with the broader community identity of SV Babelsberg 03.

As a result, the department has developed from a new section founded in 2016 into a substantial Potsdam chess organization. Today, it combines league teams, youth development, public chess, rated tournaments, and the revived Potsdamer Weihnachtsopen under one recognizable club identity.
