Gävle Schackallians (Gävle SA) is a chess club based in Gävle, Sweden. The club belongs to the Swedish organized chess structure through Sveriges Schackförbund and provides classical chess, rapid and blitz competition, team chess, tournaments, beginner activities, and community chess. Moreover, it has developed into an active tournament organizer through events such as the Gefle Elite Chess Open.

Gävle Municipality’s association register gives 1960 as the club’s founding year. The Gävle Schackallians name reflects the merger of several earlier chess clubs in Gävle, which created a single alliance for organized chess in the city. Decades later, the club experienced another period of strong development during the 2020–2021 online chess boom. That growth strengthened its playing base and eventually helped inspire new over-the-board tournament projects.

For current public administration, Gävle Municipality lists Mirko Vallius as a club contact. Meanwhile, Toni Soppela has become one of the central figures in the club’s major tournament organization. He serves as the responsible organizer for the Gefle Elite Chess Open and has also acted as tournament general for national championship events hosted by Gävle SA. Therefore, Soppela is the most useful current Contact Person for tournament-related enquiries.

🏆 Tournament Organization and Competitive Activity

Gävle Schackallians has expanded its tournament-organizing activity considerably in recent years. The club runs internal competitions while also taking responsibility for events that attract players from across Sweden.

One example is the Gävle Open Club Championship. The 2026 edition included an A group with several of the club’s strongest active players, including Toni Soppela, Jimmy Mehlstrand, Thomas Högberg, Fredrik Åkerlund, Love Dahlblom-Sundin, and other Gävle SA members.

The club has also demonstrated that it can manage national championship events. In March 2025, Sveriges Schackförbund selected Gävle SA to organize the Swedish Rapid Chess Championships for Knattar and Miniorer, covering younger junior age groups.

The championship attracted 93 players to Gävle. Toni Soppela and Thomas Högberg served as tournament generals, while other Gävle SA members joined the organizing team. Consequently, the event gave the club experience with a large national youth championship as well as its own adult tournament program.

🌟 Gefle Elite Chess Open

The Gefle Elite Chess Open (GECO) has become Gävle Schackallians’ flagship open tournament. The club launched the competition after its strong period of online activity during the pandemic years. Since then, GECO has developed into a recurring November weekend tournament with an increasingly national field.

The competition uses an unusual mixed format. Players begin with rapid chess before moving into classical games, while each discipline receives separate Elo registration. However, the combined score determines the final tournament standings.

The event has attracted strong Swedish players and titleholders. In 2024, the tournament reached 98 participants, with FM Adrian Söderström winning ahead of FM Axel Falkevall and GM Thomas Ernst. The large field demonstrated the tournament’s development from a new regional event into a significant weekend competition.

The 2026 edition is the sixth GECO and takes place from November 20–22 at Elite Hotel Gävle. Players compete over eight rounds: four FIDE rapid rounds at 15 minutes plus 5 seconds per move, followed by four classical rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.

The main prizes start with SEK 7,000 for first place, SEK 5,000 for second, and SEK 3,000 for third. In addition, the tournament provides rating-group awards and prizes for the best woman, U16 player, and senior veteran.

Gävle Schackallians controls the event’s registration and finances directly. Players send registration to Toni Soppela, while entry payments go to the club’s own PlusGiro or Swish account. The tournament also works with Gävleborgs Schackförbund and Elite Hotel Gävle as important event partners.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess remains an important part of Gävle Schackallians. The club has made significant progress in Sweden’s national Allsvenskan league system.

During the 2024–2025 season, Gävle SA won Division 2, Group 2. That result earned promotion to Division 1 for the following season.

Consequently, the club competed in Division 1 during 2025–2026. Its schedule included matches against clubs such as Upsala ASS, SK Passanten, SK Rockaden Umeå, Wasa SK III, and other established Swedish teams.

The club is also included in the preliminary Division 1 North lineup for 2026–2027. Therefore, its recent team results represent a sustained move upward rather than a single successful season.

Online team chess also played an important role in the club’s modern development. During the pandemic period, Gävle Schackallians became one of Sweden’s strongest online team organizations. In 2026, the club continued that tradition in the Svenska Blixtserien, where Gävle SA finished fourth in Division 2 during the first season of the revived competition.

🎓 Beginner Chess and Player Development

Gävle Schackallians has maintained structured beginner activity alongside competitive chess. In 2016, the club launched a Thursday beginner course led by Jan-Henrik Sandberg. The program began with only a small number of participants but gradually developed into a broader entry point for new players.

The club traditionally combines play with instruction. Club evenings have included presentations about games, openings, endgames, and other practical chess topics. This structure allows developing players to learn directly from more experienced members.

The beginner program also helped introduce adults who later became regular club players. During the online boom of 2020, the club extended this community into internet tournaments rather than abandoning the training and social network when physical meetings stopped.

That educational activity remains visible today. In 2026, Kennet Wik of Gävle Schackallians led weekly drop-in chess sessions at Andersbergs bibliotek. The sessions welcomed all age groups and gave visitors opportunities to play while receiving guidance and practical advice.

🤝 Community Chess in Gävle

Gävle Schackallians participates in public chess activities beyond formal tournaments. Its cooperation with local libraries provides one example, while the club also joins wider community events organized by Gävle Municipality.

In June 2026, Gävle Schackallians participated in the city’s Swedish National Day celebration in Boulognerskogen alongside cultural, sporting, educational, and community organizations.

The club’s activities therefore connect tournament chess with public access. Beginners can encounter the game through library sessions and community events, while established players can progress into club competitions, national team chess, and events such as GECO.

This combination reflects the purpose behind the Gävle Schackallians name. The organization brings together different parts of the city’s chess community while also connecting Gävle with players from across Sweden.
