Geneston Sud Loire Échecs is a chess club based in Geneston, Loire-Atlantique, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code C44078. It also belongs to the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs de Loire-Atlantique and the Ligue des Échecs des Pays de la Loire.

The association was established in 2014 to promote chess as both a competitive activity and a social, recreational discipline. Geneston Sud Loire Échecs organizes the annual Open Rapide de Geneston – Le Bignon, which has become a recurring tournament on the Loire-Atlantique rapid calendar.

The series reaches its 8th edition in 2026. The 8ème Open Rapide de Geneston – Le Bignon takes place on October 4, 2026, at the Salle Polyvalente du Bignon. Players compete across nine Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 12 minutes plus three seconds per move.

Moreover, the tournament receives both French rapid rating and FIDE Rapid rating. The organizer limits the 2026 field to 100 players, while Loriane Lebret serves as arbiter. Didier Fretel acts as the tournament contact.

The club has developed the event consistently over recent seasons. The sixth edition took place in 2024, followed by the seventh in 2025. Therefore, the 2026 tournament continues an established annual rapid-chess tradition for players from Geneston, Le Bignon, Nantes, and the wider Pays de la Loire region.

♜ Team Chess and Regional Competition

Team chess forms an important part of the club’s competitive program. In the current FFE structure, the first team competes in Nationale 4.

Geneston also fields an additional adult team in departmental competition. Consequently, players who are not yet ready for Nationale 4 can still gain experience in formal team matches and progress within the club.

Youth players receive similar opportunities. The FFE lists Geneston in regional youth team competition, while the club actively recruits young players who want to combine weekly lessons with competitive chess.

In addition, Geneston participates in women’s team chess, with the FFE listing the club in Nationale 2 Féminine. This broad team structure gives adult, junior, and female players several routes into federation competition.

Geneston Sud Loire Échecs offers structured weekly chess instruction for different ages and playing strengths. During the 2026 season, beginner and less experienced children train on Monday evenings from 18:00 to 19:00.

More experienced children, teenagers, and adults attend later sessions. The adult program is divided into two ability groups, which allows training to match the players’ current level more closely.

Thibaud Pellegrini, a coach qualified by the Fédération Française des Échecs, leads the structured training program. In addition, members can continue with free games after lessons and attend separate Friday evening playing sessions.

The club also maintains a chess library that members can use for independent study. Therefore, players can combine coached lessons, practical games, tournament experience, and chess literature within the same club environment.

Geneston Sud Loire Échecs welcomes both competitive and recreational players. Newcomers can attend a trial session before joining, while regular free-play evenings provide a less formal alternative to rated competition.

The club also makes chess more accessible to players with disabilities. Its regular playing venue is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the club provides two adapted chess sets for blind or visually impaired players.

Community outreach extends beyond the normal club room. For example, the club participates in Geneston’s annual associations forum and organizes public chess evenings where visitors can play casual games or learn the fundamentals.
