Échiquier Tourangeau is a chess club based in Tours, Indre-et-Loire, France. The club has represented organized chess in Tours since 1906 and affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code G37004. Its permanent chess room is located at 3 rue Molière, 37000 Tours, where members can play, train, attend courses, and prepare for competitions throughout most of the week.

The club has developed into a substantial chess organization with programs for children, adults, tournament players, women, and seniors. Current FFE records list 116 Licence A members and 123 Licence B members. Moreover, the federation awards Échiquier Tourangeau both the Club Formateur and Label Féminin distinctions, reflecting its structured training program and commitment to women’s chess.

Sébastien Billard currently serves as President and principal official contact. The 2026 club structure also includes Secretary Jean-Baptiste de Lanfranchi, Treasurer Michel Allard, and several other committee members. In addition, Jean-Noël Grateau and François Le Guillou contribute as club arbiters, while Paul-Adrien Sally, Samy Chapuis, and Pierre-Adelin Mercier support chess instruction and animation.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Échiquier Tourangeau organizes a broad annual tournament program covering classical, rapid, and blitz chess. One of its longest-running events is the Rapide de Tours, which reaches its 36th edition in 2026.

The 36ème Rapide de Tours takes place on October 4, 2026, at Salle des Fêtes Sainte-Radegonde. Sébastien Billard serves as organizer, while Jean-Noël Grateau acts as arbiter. Players compete over seven rounds at 15 minutes plus five seconds per move, and the results count for both French and FIDE rapid ratings.

The 2026 event includes an Open A for all players and a separate Open B for players rated below 1600. Therefore, the tournament provides competitive opportunities across a broad rating range.

In addition, the club organizes the Festival International d’Échecs de Tours, the Festival Franck Chandran de tournois fermés, and the Festival des Horloges. The latter combines rapid and blitz chess over a dedicated tournament weekend.

The club also runs the Challenge Laborie, a recurring rapid competition, alongside its internal championship and a tournament series for players aged 55 and over. Consequently, members can find competitive chess throughout the season rather than only at major annual events.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess forms another important part of Échiquier Tourangeau’s activity. The FFE currently lists the club’s principal adult team in Nationale 2, placing Tours within France’s national interclub structure.

The club also maintains a youth team in regional competition. Meanwhile, its women’s team competes in Nationale 1 Féminine. This participation complements the FFE’s Label Féminin awarded to the club.

Échiquier Tourangeau has traditionally fielded several teams at different national and regional levels. Moreover, members participate in competitions such as the Coupe de France, Coupe Jean-Claude Loubatière, and Coupe de la Parité when the club enters those events.

This multi-level structure helps players move from training and internal competition into formal team chess. Stronger members can compete nationally, while developing players gain experience through regional teams and cup competitions.

🎓 Chess Training and Player Development

Chess education is a major part of Échiquier Tourangeau’s program. The club offers collective courses for children and adults according to age and playing strength.

The training structure includes dedicated groups for young beginners, intermediate juniors, advanced juniors, and experienced young competitors. More advanced sessions focus on tournament preparation, game analysis, and practical exercises.

Adults also receive several options. The program includes courses for beginners, players below 1600 Elo, and stronger competitors above 1600. In addition, themed Thursday sessions allow club members to study specific aspects of chess with experienced players.

Échiquier Tourangeau also operates a tutoring system. Members can form tutor-player partnerships and work together on openings, strategy, tactics, game analysis, and tournament preparation. Therefore, learning extends beyond formal group lessons.

In March 2026, the club also organized a full-day masterclass with International Master Deimantė Daulytė-Cornette at Château d’Artigny. The program combined advanced instruction with a simultaneous exhibition.

🧒 School Chess and Community Activity

Échiquier Tourangeau also brings chess into schools and the wider Tours community. The club has organized introductory chess programs in local schools, followed by tournaments where pupils can apply what they have learned.

For example, its instructors delivered seven-session chess programs at École Diderot-Pascal and École Bernard-Pasteur. A tournament at Diderot-Pascal subsequently brought together 92 pupils. Moreover, the club continues to identify school chess as an important part of its wider educational activity.

Community events extend beyond traditional chess competition. In December 2025, Échiquier Tourangeau collaborated with 4S Tours on an Échecs-Ping evening combining chess and table tennis. The club has also organized public masterclasses, simultaneous exhibitions, and special chess events at venues around Tours.

Meanwhile, its permanent Molière venue remains open on several days each week. Members can therefore combine courses, casual games, tournaments, and team preparation within a regular club environment.
