The 2026 MCC Greg Hjorth Open runs from October 30–November 3, 2026 at Melbourne Chess Club in Fitzroy, Victoria. The nine-round weekender is held in memory of Greg Hjorth and brings a long classical event to the Melbourne Cup holiday period.
The tournament is rated by both FIDE and the Australian Chess Federation and uses 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Players compete in one Swiss field, with rating-group prizes awarded from the same tournament.
The organizer guarantees more than AUD 8,000 in prizes, equivalent to at least approximately $5,660 at the current exchange rate. First place is AUD 2,500, and substantial rating-group awards extend the prize structure well beyond the podium.

About Greg Hjorth & the Event
The tournament is held in memory of Greg Hjorth, a former Melbourne Chess Club champion and a significant figure in Australian chess who died in 2011. The Greg Hjorth Open has become one of Melbourne Chess Club’s major annual classical tournaments and is staged across the Melbourne Cup long-weekend period.
Melbourne Chess Club dates its history to 1866 and describes itself as Australia’s largest chess club. The nine-round format gives the Hjorth Open substantially more classical chess than a conventional two-day weekender.
Prize Structure
The event guarantees AUD 8,000+. In addition to the main prizes, five rating groups each award AUD 300 to first and AUD 200 to second.
| Additional Award | Prize / Description |
|---|---|
| Hjorth Junior Prize | AUD 150 for the qualifying junior who scores the biggest FIDE-rating upset |
| Brilliancy Prize | AUD 40 book voucher |
| Unrated Player Award | Free entry to another eligible Melbourne Chess Club tournament |
Half-Point Byes & Forfeit Time
Players may request up to two half-point byes in Rounds 1–7. A player taking a first-round bye must already have completed the required paid entry. The published forfeit time is 30 minutes.

| Player Category | Base Entry |
|---|---|
| MCC Full Member | AUD 120 |
| MCC Concession / Junior Member | AUD 110 |

GM, WGM, IM, and WIM players receive free entry by the early deadline. Eligible Melbourne Chess Club FM/WFM players also receive the published title concession. When a title-eligible player registers after the early deadline, the organizer applies the published reduced treatment rather than the full early free-entry benefit.
Refund Policy
The organizer states that refunds are available when the player notifies the club at least 24 hours before the event. Players should use the tournament registration channel rather than simply failing to appear.
