Melbourne Chess Club (MCC) is a historic chess organization based in Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. Established in 1866, the club describes itself as the oldest continually operating chess club in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, it provides tournament chess, junior and adult coaching, rapid and blitz competitions, social chess, and major FIDE-rated events from its permanent clubrooms at 66 Leicester Street, Fitzroy.

The club has played a major role in Australian and Victorian chess for more than 150 years. In its early decades, Melbourne Chess Club helped organize interstate matches and major championships. Moreover, it inaugurated the Victorian Championship in 1891 and managed that competition until the formation of the Victorian Chess Association. The club also organized several early editions of the Australian Open and has welcomed generations of leading Australian and international players.

IM Alexei Khamatgaleev currently serves as President of Melbourne Chess Club. The current committee also includes Vice President William Kersey, Treasurer Tony Tosevski, Secretary Craig Savage, Registrar Lillian Lu, and Tournament Director Thai Ly. In addition, a broader committee supports club operations, coaching, tournaments, and member activities. Thai Ly serves as Chief Organizer of the 2026 MCC Greg Hjorth Open.

🏆 Major Tournaments and Competitive Activity

Melbourne Chess Club maintains one of Australia’s most extensive year-round club tournament programs. Its calendar combines classical, rapid, blitz, round-robin, junior, and championship competitions.

The program includes the MCC Championship, MCC Classic, Edwin Malitis Memorials, Bob Brooking Round Robins, monthly blitz tournaments, Saturday Allegro events, junior championships, and seasonal chess festivals. Moreover, many of its classical competitions receive both FIDE and Australian Chess Federation rating.

MCC also hosts major Victorian events. The 2026 Victorian Chess Championship takes place at the club, while the Victorian Interclub Rapid also appears on its current event calendar.

🌟 Greg Hjorth Open

The Greg Hjorth Open is Melbourne Chess Club’s premier annual tournament. MCC organizes the competition in memory of IM Greg Hjorth, a former Melbourne Chess Club champion who died in 2011. Hjorth also represented Australia at Chess Olympiad level.

The 2026 MCC Greg Hjorth Open takes place from October 30 to November 3 at the club’s Fitzroy headquarters. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds at a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Furthermore, the competition receives both FIDE and ACF rating.

The 2026 tournament offers a guaranteed prize fund exceeding A$8,000. The prize structure includes major overall awards, five rating groups, a junior prize, and a brilliancy prize. Therefore, the event creates meaningful competitive targets for players across a wide rating range.

FIDE lists Thai Ly as Chief Organizer and Daniel Poberezovsky as Chief Arbiter for the 2026 edition. The tournament continues a long-running MCC tradition of combining a strong open field with opportunities for club players and juniors.

🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development

Junior development forms an important part of Melbourne Chess Club’s weekly program. The club runs Saturday Morning Junior Coaching during school terms for players from enthusiastic beginners through early club-competition level.

The 2026 coaching team includes IM Ryder Testolin, FM Kai Jie Soo, Sophie Davis, Jasper Hird, Leo Kalina, and Randheer Thogata. Sessions combine instruction, puzzles, game analysis, and practical chess. Consequently, young players learn both fundamental concepts and skills that prepare them for tournament competition.

MCC also organizes a dedicated Junior Club Championship. This gives developing players a pathway from weekly coaching into rated tournament chess.

In addition, junior members receive access to the broader club environment. They can participate in suitable rapid, blitz, classical, and seasonal competitions while learning from stronger players who regularly attend the club.

Melbourne Chess Club also provides structured learning for adults. Its coaching program includes beginner and intermediate instruction designed for players who want to move from casual or online chess into stronger over-the-board play.

The club combines learning with immediate practical experience. For example, Wednesday Social Night welcomes players of all strengths for casual games at the Fitzroy clubrooms. Visitors can attend without advance registration.

Moreover, MCC runs online masterclasses alongside its over-the-board program. This gives members additional opportunities to study chess even when they cannot attend the club in person.

Saturday afternoons provide another regular competitive option through the MCC Allegro. Monthly blitz tournaments add a faster format, while long-play events continue throughout the year. Therefore, players can choose between training, social play, and formal competition according to their goals.

Melbourne Chess Club has a particularly important place in Australian chess history. The organization began at a meeting on August 4, 1866, and soon became a central institution in Victorian competitive chess.

The club organized early interstate telegraphic matches and helped establish structured championship chess in Victoria. In 1891, it inaugurated the Victorian Championship. Later, MCC played an important role in the development of the Victorian Chess Association and continued hosting major state competitions.

Many distinguished Australian players have been associated with the club. Its history includes Australian champions, Victorian champions, International Masters, and Grandmasters. In particular, GM Ian Rogers, Australia’s first Grandmaster, is among the major players connected with Melbourne Chess Club.

Today, MCC continues that heritage from its Fitzroy headquarters. At the same time, it combines historical traditions with modern FIDE-rated tournaments, junior coaching, online instruction, and an active social chess community.
