SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg e.V. – Schachabteilung is an established chess organization in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The chess section forms part of the multi-sport club SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg e.V. and competes within the Landesschachverband Sachsen-Anhalt and the German Chess Federation structure. Its activities include league chess, junior development, training, open tournaments, blitz competitions, and inclusive chess initiatives.

The chess section dates from August 4, 1951, when BSG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg was established. After German reunification, the organization became SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg e.V. in 1990. Chess remained one of its core sporting sections. Moreover, the club developed a particularly strong tradition of youth work and competitive team chess during the following decades.

Jens Windelband currently leads the chess section and serves as its principal public contact. He also holds a central role in organizing the Magdeburger Open. The club’s current records identify Windelband as both chairman of the chess organization and head of the chess department. In addition, he remains an active competitive player.

🏆 Magdeburger Open and Tournament Organization

SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg plays a central role in organizing the annual Magdeburger Open, one of the established open chess tournaments in Saxony-Anhalt.

The event operates as a joint project of the Landesschachverband Sachsen-Anhalt e.V., the chess section of SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg e.V., and VfB Ottersleben e.V. Therefore, the Magdeburger Open should not be attributed exclusively to one organization. However, SG Aufbau Elbe has a particularly direct operational role. The tournament entry fees are handled through the club, while Jens Windelband manages the tournament organization and official communication.

The 31. Magdeburger Open 2026 takes place from October 29 to November 1 at Hegel-Gymnasium in Magdeburg. Players compete in two sections: the Ottonen-Gruppe and Editha-Gruppe. The main section receives both DWZ and FIDE Elo rating.

Recent editions have attracted substantial fields. The 30th Magdeburger Open in 2025 drew 233 players, including 101 participants in the A tournament and 132 in the B tournament. GM Hagen Poetsch won the leading section. Consequently, the event has developed into a significant annual meeting point for players from Magdeburg and beyond.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Achievements

Competitive team chess represents a major part of SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg’s history. The first team earned promotion to the Oberliga Ost in 1999 and later achieved several promotions to Germany’s 2. Bundesliga.

The club’s competitive squads have included International Masters, FIDE Masters, Woman Grandmasters, and leading players from Saxony-Anhalt. Notable names associated with Aufbau Elbe include IM Jevgeny Degtiarev, WGM Tatjana Melamed, FM Johannes Paul, FM Bennet Biastoch, FM Daniel Malek, FM Benjamin Wagner, and FM Vinzent Spitzl.

In 2023, the first team again earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. In addition, Aufbau Elbe has competed successfully in German team-cup events and other national competitions.

The club also maintains several teams below its leading squad. Therefore, members can enter organized league chess at different playing levels rather than competing only for the first team.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development has shaped the identity of Aufbau Elbe for decades. From the 1970s onward, the chess department increasingly concentrated on building a structured junior program.

That work produced numerous championship successes. In 2011, Aufbau Elbe became German U10 club team champion. The club later won the German U14 Team Championship in 2015 and the German U16 Team Championship in 2016.

Several individual juniors also developed into leading German players. Josefine Heinemann became German U16 Girls Champion in 2013 and German U18 Girls Champion in 2015. Meanwhile, Fiona Sieber became European U16 Girls Champion in 2016.

The club continues its junior work in cooperation with Schachzwerge Magdeburg e.V. Regular youth training provides a route from introductory chess into federation competition and team events. Moreover, Aufbau Elbe players continue to represent the club in German youth team championships.

♿ Inclusive Chess and Community Activity

SG Aufbau Elbe Magdeburg has a particularly notable history in inclusive chess. During the 1960s and early 1970s, the club supported a group of up to ten blind chess players under trainer Kurt Wehling.

This commitment continued in later decades. In 2007, the chess section received a Stern des Sports in Bronze for its work on integration. The project included the integration of migrants and the development of a Chinese chess team.

The club later expanded its accessibility work through dedicated inclusive chess tournaments. These events provided accessible playing conditions, chess equipment for blind players, sign-language support for deaf participants, and transportation assistance.

In 2021, SG Aufbau Elbe again received recognition through the Sterne des Sports program for its inclusive chess work. Consequently, accessibility has become a long-standing part of the section’s community activity rather than a temporary project.

🤝 Club Life and Training in Magdeburg

Regular chess activity takes place primarily at the Heinrich-Germer-Stadion in Magdeburg. The chess section runs Monday club evenings, training sessions, league preparation, and other activities there.

The club also cooperates closely with Schachzwerge Magdeburg, whose premises on Basedowstraße provide another training location. This partnership supports junior instruction and connects young players with Aufbau Elbe’s competitive team structure.

In addition, the section organizes regular blitz chess and analysis sessions. Adult beginners can also join dedicated training. Therefore, the club serves both experienced league players and people who are only starting to explore organized chess.
