The 7. Heidelberger Schachherbst 2026 runs from October 29–November 1, 2026 at Bürgerhaus Heidelberg in the Emmertsgrund district. Bernd Kühn and Schachliebe e.V. organize the four-day FIDE-rated festival.
The tournament has A and B sections and uses seven Swiss rounds. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to finish, with a 30-second increment from move one.
The organizer advertises more than €5,500 in prizes across the two sections and caps the event at 360 players. Since the exact final cash total is stated only as “over €5,500,” the separate USD prize-fund field is left blank.

The organizer states that the principal A-section prizes are guaranteed with at least 100 players in A, and the principal B-section prizes are guaranteed with at least 100 players in B. Special-category awards require the published minimum participation. A player must have a valid Elo or DWZ to qualify for a rating-band prize.
Tie-Breaks & Prize Payment
The published tie-break procedure uses Buchholz followed by Sonneborn-Berger, with one result discarded under the tournament’s stated method. Prize money is transferred after the tournament rather than paid as cash at the board.
Registration & Refunds
Registration becomes complete after the organizer receives both the player’s entry information and payment. Mandatory on-site registration takes place on Thursday from 1:00–2:30 PM, after which Round 1 starts at 3:30 PM.
Cancellation refunds are subject to a 20% processing deduction. From October 22, refunds are generally unavailable unless the player provides the medical documentation permitted by the organizer’s regulations.
Rating & Section Placement
Section placement uses the player’s current German DWZ. A is intended for players with DWZ 1800 and above, while B is available up to DWZ 1900, creating an intentional overlap. Both sections are submitted for FIDE and German national rating, and a FIDE ID is required.
Fair Play & Media
The tournament applies German federation and FIDE anti-cheating guidance and can carry out random fair-play checks. Registration also includes acceptance of the organizer’s published data, photography, and event-media provisions.
Recent Tournament History
The Heidelberger Schachherbst has developed into a large autumn event. The organizer’s earlier editions have attracted several hundred players; the 2023 edition reached approximately 345 participants, illustrating why the 2026 field is capped at 360.
