Chess Pyramid 2026 takes place from October 9–11, 2026 at Villa Volontieri in Vimercate, Italy. Circolo Scacchi La Mongolfiera runs a compact knockout competition for players rated below 2400, with only 32 places available.
The tournament uses a distinctive 60-minute control with a 30-second delay on every move. Therefore, the player’s clock starts decreasing only after the first 30 seconds of the move have elapsed. Drawn classical games lead immediately to an Armageddon playoff.
The four semifinalists all play on Sunday, which determines first through fourth place. The published cash awards total €480 / approx. $560, together with the Chess Pyramid trophy and medals.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The event uses direct elimination. The initial bracket is seeded by starting rating: the top seed meets the last player on the list, the second seed meets the penultimate player, and the same pattern continues through the bracket.
A classical win advances the player. However, a draw is followed immediately by an Armageddon game. White receives five minutes and Black receives four; Black advances if the Armageddon game is drawn.
| Detail | Rule |
|---|---|
| Main game | 60 minutes with a 30-second delay per move |
| Classical draw | Immediate Armageddon |
| Armageddon | White 5 minutes; Black 4 minutes |
| Armageddon draw | Black advances |
| Round 1 colors | Determined by drawing lots |
| Later colors | Alternation under the published lower-ID rule |
The four semifinalists remain active for the final round. The semifinal winners play for first and second place, while the semifinal losers play for third and fourth.
