♟️ About WSV ATSV Ranshofen Schach

WSV ATSV Ranshofen Schach is an active chess organization in Braunau am Inn, Upper Austria. It operates as the chess section of WSV ATSV Ranshofen. Moreover, the club competes within the Salzburg chess structure and serves players from the Austrian-German border region. Its official archive records many years of league, youth, training, and tournament activity.

The club builds its program around competitive chess, grassroots participation, and youth development. Therefore, it welcomes experienced tournament players, adult club members, beginners, and young learners. Club evenings take place every Friday at Brauhaus Haselbach. Members can play games, analyse positions, train together, and prepare for upcoming competitions.

Wolfgang Kücher serves as President, while Dr. Ilia Swanidze is Vice-President. Andreas Girlinger manages the club’s finances, and Martin Schneeweis serves as Secretary. In addition, Martin Schneeweis directs the Braunau Chess Open and handles tournament communication. The club confirmed the same leadership team again at its 2026 general meeting.

🏆 Braunau Chess Open and Tournament Activity

The club’s flagship competition is the Braunau Chess Open. Its official archive contains results and photographs from editions dating back to 2006. Consequently, the tournament has become a long-running part of the regional chess calendar.

The event takes place at the historic Schloss Ranshofen in Braunau am Inn. It normally offers several rating groups, allowing players to enter an appropriate section. Moreover, the strongest sections count toward Austrian and FIDE standard ratings. The organizer also provides awards for juniors, women, seniors, and local players.

In 2025, more than 120 players from around ten countries competed across three sections. Meanwhile, the 2026 edition expands the program to Open A, Open B, Open C, and a separate youth tournament. Martin Schneeweis serves as Tournament Director, while National Arbiter Norbert Fruehauf leads the arbiter team.

The club also stages regional rapid and team competitions. In 2026, it hosted the Salzburg Rapid Team Cup at Brauhaus Haselbach. Ranshofen won the competition for the third consecutive year. As a result, the challenge trophy remained permanently with the club.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Development

Team chess forms a major part of the organization’s program. During the 2025–2026 season, WSV ATSV Ranshofen entered five teams. Therefore, members could represent the club at several levels of Austrian league competition.

Ranshofen 1 competed in the 2nd Bundesliga West, while the second team played in Landesliga A. Two additional teams entered Landesliga B. Meanwhile, Ranshofen 5 competed in the 2. Klasse Nord. This structure gives both strong players and developing members regular match experience.

The first team finished ninth in the 2025–2026 Bundesliga West season. Moreover, the result placed the club in a strong position to retain its place in the division. The lower teams also provided valuable playing opportunities throughout the season.

Club members regularly enter open tournaments, rapid competitions, and regional championships. In addition, the official website reports individual podium finishes and category successes. These achievements reflect an active competitive culture beyond the club’s own events.

🎓 Youth Training and Community Chess

Youth development remains one of the club’s main priorities. Training takes place every Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brauhaus Haselbach. The program welcomes beginners and more advanced juniors. Moreover, children may begin from preschool age when the training format suits their development.

Coaches introduce the pieces through simple games and gradual exercises. Later, students study tactics, strategy, calculation, and practical tournament skills. Therefore, young players can progress without unnecessary pressure. Advanced juniors may also enter youth tournaments, league matches, and regional championships.

The club reorganized its youth training before the 2025 season. Since then, several juniors have achieved strong results at Salzburg championships. In 2026, Tobias won the U12 rapid title, while Jonathan became the U8 blitz champion. Other Ranshofen players also earned podium places in youth competitions.

WSV ATSV Ranshofen also supports community chess outside formal tournaments. Club members take part in public sports days and local chess meetings. In addition, the organization works with municipal institutions, the Salzburg Chess Federation, ASKÖ partners, sponsors, and volunteers. Above all, it connects serious competition with accessible local chess.
