♟️ About Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano

Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano, commonly known as Club Ébano Barrio Nuevo, is an established chess organization in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. The club was founded in 1989 and has remained active in Canary Islands chess for more than three decades. Moreover, it welcomes players of different ages, origins, and competitive levels.

The club operates from the Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo in La Laguna. This permanent base supports chess lessons, club meetings, league matches, and tournament activity. In addition, the organization maintains strong links with the local community and Tenerife’s official chess structure.

Juan Luis Marín Carvajal serves as a principal organizer and technical director for Club Ébano events. He manages tournament preparation, player communication, and practical competition arrangements. Meanwhile, experienced arbiters support the club’s internationally rated tournaments.

🏆 Team Chess and Competitive Achievements

Club Ébano competes actively in the Tenerife team leagues and the Canary Islands Club Championship. Its competitive structure includes several teams across different divisions. Therefore, established players, developing competitors, and younger members can represent the organization at a suitable level.

The club won the Canary Islands Team Championship in 2024. Its leading team included grandmasters, international masters, titled local players, and emerging talents. As a result, Ébano earned the opportunity to represent the Canary Islands in Spain’s national team competition.

Ébano also won the top Tenerife Preferente division in 2025. Moreover, its second team finished first in the island’s First Division during the same season. These results showed the depth of the club’s playing squad across more than one competitive level.

At regional level, the club finished as Canary Islands runner-up in 2025. It repeated that achievement in 2026 and remained one of the leading team organizations in the archipelago. In addition, individual Ébano players regularly earn provincial and regional titles.

♟️ Tournaments and Chess Events

Club Ébano organizes classical, rapid, blitz, and Chess960 tournaments in La Laguna. Its calendar combines internationally rated competitions with shorter community events. Consequently, players can choose between serious multi-day tournaments and accessible one-day formats.

The club’s principal classical project is the Ébano Open 60+30. This competition uses a seven-round Swiss format and counts toward FIDE Standard ratings. Furthermore, its prize structure includes overall awards and dedicated categories for women, seniors, juniors, lower-rated players, and club members.

Ébano also organizes a dedicated Chess960 tournament. The event encourages creativity and strategic thinking by removing traditional opening preparation. In addition, it welcomes club members, titled players, and other interested participants.

The organization has also supported major chess projects in La Laguna, including internationally rated active tournaments and public events. Moreover, it works with the Organismo Autónomo de Deportes, municipal institutions, chess federations, and local community partners. These relationships help the club deliver well-supported competitions across the city.

🎓 Youth Chess and Community Development

Youth development forms an important part of Club Ébano’s activity. The organization provides regular chess classes at its Barrio Nuevo base. Therefore, children can learn the rules, tactics, calculation, and tournament behaviour within a structured club environment.

Young Ébano players regularly compete in Tenerife age-group championships and Canary Islands events. The club has achieved strong results in U16, U18, and other junior categories. Moreover, several developing players later progress into the club’s senior league teams.

The club also promotes chess through public, educational, and cultural activities. For example, it has collaborated with the University of La Laguna on interdisciplinary chess programs. In addition, municipal recognition has highlighted its contribution to sport, education, and community life in La Laguna.

Through team competition, rated tournaments, junior instruction, and community partnerships, Club Ébano supports several generations of players. Above all, it combines high-level competitive ambition with accessible local chess activity.
