Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano, also known in competition as Ébano Barrio Nuevo, is a chess club based in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Its permanent base is the Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo, where it hosts chess training, club activities, league matches, and tournaments. Club Deportivo Ajedrez Ébano was founded in late 1989 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The club developed around the Barrio Nuevo area and has participated continuously in official Canary Islands chess competitions since its foundation. Over the years, Ébano has built a strong record in both Tenerife and regional team chess. The club’s official history records two Canary Islands team championships as well as multiple Tenerife titles. It has also represented the Canary Islands in the Spanish national club championships. One of its strongest recent seasons came in 2024. Ébano Barrio Nuevo A won the Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos with a perfect six match victories. Moreover, Ébano Barrio Nuevo B finished third, demonstrating the depth of the club’s competitive structure. The first team then finished sixth in the 2024 Spanish Second Division Club Championship. In 2025, the Federación de Asociaciones Vecinales de Aguere recognized Ébano for its long-standing contribution to sporting life in La Laguna. The award coincided with more than 35 years of continuous club activity.

Team chess remains central to the club’s identity. Ébano enters several squads across the Tenerife league system, allowing experienced competitors, developing players, and juniors to represent the organization. The club again produced a strong regional result in 2026. Ébano Barrio Nuevo A finished second in the Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos, scoring five wins and one draw from six matches. The team finished level on match points and game points with champion La Caja de Vecindario A, with the title decided by a later tiebreak criterion. Ébano Barrio Nuevo B also competed in the same regional championship. In August 2026, the club participated in the Campeonato de España por Equipos de Segunda División in Linares. The II Open 60+30 Ébano 2026 took place from March 23–28 at the Centro Ciudadano Barrio Nuevo. The seven-round Swiss tournament used a classical time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move and counted for FIDE Standard rating. Juan Luis Marín Carvajal served as Technical Director. In June, the club organized the II Torneo Ajedrez 960 Ébano 2026. The Chess960 tournament attracted 57 players, including FIDE-titled competitors and a substantial representation from Ébano itself. This format adds variety to the club’s tournament program by reducing the importance of conventional opening preparation. Ébano has also played an important organizational role in the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Recent editions have been organized jointly with the Organismo Autónomo de Deportes de La Laguna, while the wider festival has included classical, blitz, and rapid competitions.
