♟️ About Mind Sports Olympiad

Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO) is an international mind-sports festival and tournament organization based in London, United Kingdom. Founded in 1997, it brings together competitive chess with a broad range of board games, abstract strategy games, card games, puzzles, mental calculation, and other intellectual disciplines. The inaugural Olympiad was held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and the event has continued as an annual international gathering of mind-sports competitors. MSO organizes competitions for players ranging from juniors and recreational participants to international-level specialists. Its program includes individual tournaments and recognized world championships, while the Pentamind World Championship rewards the strongest all-round competitor based on results across five eligible disciplines. Since the pandemic-era move online, MSO has also maintained an online Grand Prix alongside its principal in-person summer festival in London. Etan Ilfeld is the current Director and principal public contact for Mind Sports Olympiad. He has been involved in organizing and developing MSO since 2010. In August 2026, the organization is staging its landmark 30th Mind Sports Olympiad, running from August 22–30 at Mercure London Earls Court. Chess is a major part of the program, including FIDE-rated rapid and blitz, Chess960, bughouse, problem solving, and the Vera Menchik Memorial.

📜 History and Development

The first Mind Sports Olympiad took place in 1997 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The inaugural festival carried a £100,000 prize fund and introduced a format in which competitors could pursue medals across many different intellectual disciplines within one large event. MSO subsequently used venues around London and elsewhere in England, including Alexandra Palace, the University of London Union, and JW3. In 2020 and 2021, the Olympiad moved online. The in-person event returned to London in 2022, while online competition continued through the MSO Grand Prix series. This hybrid structure has allowed MSO to maintain its traditional annual London festival while also connecting players internationally throughout the year.

🏆 Competitions and Pentamind

The Mind Sports Olympiad covers an unusually broad range of competitive games. Its programs have included chess, Go, Scrabble, backgammon, Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, draughts, poker, Quoridor, mental calculation, Sudoku, and numerous other strategy and puzzle disciplines. Medals are awarded within individual events, and several competitions carry world-championship status. The organization’s signature combined competition is the Pentamind World Championship. Competitors build their Pentamind score from their strongest performances across five eligible events, rewarding versatility rather than specialization in a single game. Sir Demis Hassabis is among the competition’s notable former champions, having won the Pentamind title five times.

♟️ Chess at Mind Sports Olympiad

Chess has been part of MSO since its early years and now encompasses both conventional tournament chess and variants. The current program includes rapid, blitz, Chess960/Fischer Random, bughouse, chess problem solving, and related international chess disciplines such as Shogi and Xiangqi. For the 2026 Mind Sports Olympiad, MSO partnered with Elite Chess Events for its main FIDE- and nationally rated rapid and blitz competitions. Lance Leslie-Smith served as Tournament Director, with IA Alan Atkinson as Chief Arbiter. The rapid program consisted of Open, Under 1900, and Under 1600 sections over ten rounds at 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. The 2026 Rapid Open attracted a strong international field. Joseph Girel won the Open with 9/10, ahead of Ameet Ghasi, Siva Mahadevan, and Marcus Harvey on 7.5 points. The Open alone offered a £4,000 prize fund.

🌍 30th Mind Sports Olympiad 2026

The 30th Mind Sports Olympiad takes place from August 22–30, 2026 at Mercure London Earls Court, 47 Lillie Road, London. The nine-day festival combines chess with dozens of other mind-sport competitions and major international events, including World Backgammon Championships. The chess program extends beyond the opening rapid and blitz weekend. It also includes chess problem solving, Exchange Chess/Bughouse, Chess960, and the 11th Vera Menchik Memorial, held from August 24–30. The Menchik Memorial is a ten-player international women’s round-robin providing opportunities for WGM and WIM norms.

🏛️ Organization

Etan Ilfeld is the current Director of Mind Sports Olympiad and has played a central role in its organization and development since 2010. MSO works with specialist tournament directors, arbiters, game organizations, sponsors, and partner organizations according to the disciplines included in each edition. For chess, this collaborative structure allows the wider MSO festival to combine its multi-game identity with experienced chess-event management and FIDE-standard tournament administration.
