♟️ About ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov

ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov is an established Czech chess club and tournament organizer based in Turnov, in the Liberec Region. Founded in 1980, the club has developed into one of the prominent chess organizations in the Czech Republic. It welcomes adult players, juniors, recreational members, and experienced competitors while combining local club activity with participation at the highest levels of Czech team chess.

The club maintains a substantial competitive structure. Its leading team competes in the Czech Extraliga, while additional teams participate in the First League, Second League, regional championship, and regional competition. This five-team system provides opportunities for players of different strengths to represent the club in serious over-the-board matches throughout the season.

Ing. Zdeněk Maršálek serves as club president and is also an experienced tournament director, arbiter, trainer, and competitive player. He works alongside Vice President Ing. Dana Ďúranová, committee members, team captains, coaches, arbiters, parents, and volunteers. Together, they support the club’s league program, youth activities, training sessions, tournaments, and major chess events in Turnov.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Tournament organization is a major part of ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov’s identity. The club organizes classical, rapid, blitz, team, youth, senior, and championship events. Its experience includes local competitions as well as major tournaments conducted in cooperation with the Czech Chess Federation.

One of its best-known recurring events is Turnovský Granát, an open rapid tournament included in the Czech national Rapid Grand Prix series. The competition attracts adult players, juniors, women, and seniors for nine rounds of rated rapid chess. Another established event is O Rohozecký soudek, a popular open rapid tournament with several age and performance categories.

The club also organizes the František Zikuda Memorial, a rapid competition for two-player teams. The event commemorates František Zikuda, who played an important role in Turnov chess, supported numerous championships, and helped lead the club’s Extraliga team. The 2026 memorial combines competitive team chess with youth participation by requiring at least one younger player in every pair.

ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov has also hosted Czech national championships in team rapid chess, team blitz chess, and women’s rapid chess. In addition, it has organized final rounds of the Czech Extraliga. This experience allows the club to provide qualified arbiters, published regulations, online results, live games, suitable playing venues, and professional tournament administration.

🎓 Youth Development and Club Life

The club’s dedicated youth section was established in 2016 to continue Turnov’s tradition of junior chess and create a broad development system for young players. Children can begin with introductory instruction before progressing to regular training, individual tournaments, regional championships, and official team competitions.

ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov organizes youth training sessions, rapid tournaments, club activities, and chess camps. Its recurring training camps in Drhleny combine structured chess instruction with games, outdoor activities, and opportunities for young members and their families to spend time together outside the normal competition schedule.

The club also organizes and supports junior events such as Mašovské rošády and regional youth rapid championships. Its young players compete in individual and team events at regional and national level, giving them a clear pathway from beginner instruction to serious tournament chess.

Through top-level team competition, experienced tournament organization, youth coaching, and community activity, ŠK ZIKUDA Turnov plays an important role in chess across Turnov and the wider Liberec Region. The club provides opportunities for both ambitious competitors and developing players while maintaining a strong connection with the city’s sporting traditions.
