♟️ About the Organizer
Schachverein Caissa Wolfenbüttel e.V., commonly known as Caissa Wolfenbüttel, is an established chess club in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany. Two local organizations merged in 1971 to form the present club. They were Schachgesellschaft Wolfenbüttel 1946 and Schach-Klub Wolfenbüttel von 1957. Therefore, the club continues a local chess tradition that predates its official foundation.
The club welcomes children, adults, beginners, social players, and experienced league competitors. Members meet every Tuesday at the Elster- und Geitelhaus of Große Schule Wolfenbüttel. Youth training begins at 5:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the adult club evening starts at 7:00 p.m.
Marc-Kevin Zehe serves as chairman and represents the registered association. In addition, Dietrich Möseler supports the club as deputy chairman and tournament director. Sven Dörge coordinates youth chess, while Karin Bilawer manages the club’s finances. Together, the board oversees administration, competitions, training, and communication with members.
Caissa Wolfenbüttel belongs to the German Chess Federation structure through the Lower Saxony Chess Federation and the Braunschweig Chess District. Moreover, the club enters three teams in regional competitions. During the 2025/2026 season, those teams competed from the Verbandsliga down to the Bezirksstaffel. As a result, members can find suitable team competition at several playing levels.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
The Lessing Open is the club’s leading annual tournament. Caissa Wolfenbüttel organized the first edition in 2005. Since then, the event has developed into a major regional competition with participants from across Lower Saxony and other parts of Germany. The club traditionally schedules it for the first weekend after the Lower Saxony summer holidays.
The tournament forms part of the Lower Saxony Chess Federation Grand Prix. Moreover, the organizers cooperate with the federation, the City of Wolfenbüttel, the Braunschweig Chess District, and neighboring clubs. These partnerships provide equipment, technical support, registration services, and suitable playing conditions.
The 20th Lessing Open takes place from August 21–23, 2026, at Lindenhalle Wolfenbüttel. The event features five classical rounds across three rating groups. The A section receives both FIDE Elo and German DWZ rating. Meanwhile, the B and C sections receive DWZ rating. The tournament can accommodate up to 250 participants.
The 2026 edition also provides live coverage from every board. In addition, its section structure supports advanced players, developing competitors, and lower-rated participants. Rating prizes and team awards further broaden the competition. Therefore, players can pursue both individual and collective results.
Beyond the Lessing Open, the club runs several internal and public competitions. Its program includes the Wolfenbüttel City Championship, City Blitz Championship, Club Championship, Club Blitz Championship, rapid tournaments, and a monthly blitz series. Moreover, open city events allow players outside the club to participate.
Caissa Wolfenbüttel manages tournament regulations, entries, pairings, arbitration, results, prizes, and rating submissions. In addition, it maintains an archive of earlier champions and Lessing Open winners. This archive preserves an important part of Wolfenbüttel’s competitive chess history.
🌱 Youth Chess and Community Development
Youth development forms a central part of the club’s weekly program. Children and teenagers train every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Coaches organize separate learning groups, including groups for especially young players. Therefore, beginners can learn in an age-appropriate environment before entering formal competition.
The training program combines instruction, practical games, tactical exercises, and tournament preparation. Moreover, young members can join club competitions and regional events as their skills develop. The club also encourages visitors to attend a training session before deciding whether to become members.
Caissa Wolfenbüttel regularly enters junior players in district and state competitions. In addition, it has hosted major regional youth events. For example, the club organized the 2024 Braunschweig District Youth Individual Championships at Große Schule Wolfenbüttel. The program covered age groups from Under-10 through Under-18.
The club also connects youth activity with its wider tournament program. Young players can compete in rapid, blitz, classical, team, and rating-restricted events. As a result, they gain experience across several formats. Stronger juniors can then progress toward state and national competitions.
Community chess remains equally important. The club organizes open evenings, lectures, game-analysis sessions, social events, and public tournaments. Moreover, it celebrated its 50th anniversary with a simultaneous exhibition by Grandmaster Vlastimil Hort. The event brought members and guests together around the club’s long history.
Through weekly meetings, youth training, league teams, and open tournaments, Caissa Wolfenbüttel serves players at every stage. Beginners can discover organized chess in a welcoming setting. Meanwhile, experienced members can pursue demanding regional and nationally rated competition.
