Schachverband Württemberg e.V. (SVW) is the regional chess federation for Württemberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The federation coordinates organized chess across six districts: Stuttgart, Unterland, Neckar-Fils, Oberschwaben, Ostalb, and Alb-Schwarzwald. It oversees league and championship competition, youth chess, women’s chess, senior chess, training, arbiter education, amateur tournaments, club support, and regional player development. For the 2026–2027 competition structure, the federation records 9,606 members across its six districts. SVW operates an extensive competition system that includes the Württembergische Einzelmeisterschaft, team championships, the Württembergischer Mannschaftspokal, individual cup competitions, rapid and blitz championships, and the Württembergische Amateur-Meisterschaft (WAM) series. Meanwhile, the Württembergische Schachjugend manages a broad junior program with youth championships, team competitions, talent development, school chess, girls’ chess, and the Württembergische Jugend-Pokal-Turnier series. Dr. Carsten Karthaus currently serves as President of Schachverband Württemberg, while Thomas Wiedmann manages the federation office and represents the most useful operational contact for general correspondence. The federation has remained especially active in 2026. It staged the Württembergisches Schachfestival from August 17–23, 2026 at Sportschule Ruit, continued its regional tournament series, expanded coach education, and is preparing the 2026–2027 competitive season.

📜 History and Development

The federation traces its origins to January 23, 1910, when the Schwäbischer Schachbund was founded at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart. Following the Second World War, the organization was reorganized and adopted the name Schachverband Württemberg in 1948. For part of the post-war period it operated as Schachverband Württemberg-Hohenzollern before developing into the modern regional federation. Over more than a century, SVW has built a broad structure that combines high-level competition with grassroots club development. Today, its responsibilities extend from official championships and league administration to junior development, coach education, public chess, inclusion, sustainability, and support for local associations. In 2026, SVW has also continued discussions with the Badischer Schachverband regarding the possible creation of a common Baden-Württemberg chess federation. Updated draft regulations and organizational documents were discussed throughout the year, while the existing Württemberg federation continues to operate its full competition and development program.

♜ Competitions and League Chess

SVW coordinates a substantial network of team and individual competitions across Württemberg. Its structure links competitions in the six regional districts with federation-level championships. Important events include the Württembergischer Mannschaftspokal, Württemberg individual cup, team rapid and blitz championships, individual blitz championship, and the qualification system leading from district events to higher-level competitions. The Württembergischer Mannschaftspokal 2026 concluded with SK Bebenhausen taking the title. In addition, the federation prepares a detailed seasonal calendar for clubs and districts to coordinate league rounds, championships, qualification tournaments, and free weekends. The 2026–2027 federation schedule uses membership figures from all six districts to allocate qualification places for major Württemberg competitions.

🎓 Youth Chess, Training and Development

Youth chess forms one of the federation’s largest areas of activity. The Württembergische Schachjugend coordinates championships and development programs from introductory youth events through high-level competitive chess. The tournament system includes Württembergische Jugend-Pokal-Turniere (WJPT), Württembergische Amateur-Meisterschaften (WAM), school chess Grand Prix events, youth Grand Prix competitions, regional championships, team championships, and talent programs. During the 2025–2026 season, youth events took place throughout Württemberg. The program included the Württemberg Youth Individual Championships, U10 and other team championships, girls’ events, training camps, and talent identification tournaments. Coach development is another priority. In summer 2026, the federation reported that 17 new C-Trainers had completed training. Moreover, demand for the next C-Trainer course scheduled for October 2026 was strong enough for all places to be filled well in advance.

🏆 Württembergisches Schachfestival 2026

One of SVW’s principal annual events is the Württembergisches Schachfestival, which combines several major championships in one program. The 2026 festival took place from August 17–23 at Sportschule Ruit in Ostfildern. The program included the Württembergische Einzelmeisterschaft – Meisterturnier, Kandidatenturnier, an Open tournament, an inclusive championship for players with disabilities, and the International Open German Women’s Championship. Additional competitions included blitz, Chess960, and chess-problem solving, creating a wider festival around the main classical tournaments. The Meisterturnier used a closed norm-tournament format and also determined the Württemberg champion. FM Dr. Georg Braun earned the title of Württembergischer Meister 2026, while Neil Albrecht produced the strongest overall performance in the Meisterklasse. In the women’s competition, Ana-Maria Bursan became the new Württemberg women’s titleholder.

🌱 Club Support and Federation Development

Beyond tournament organization, SVW provides practical support to its affiliated clubs. Its services include information on training, grants, subsidies, club development, recreational chess, school chess, public relations, and chess equipment. The federation has also expanded its work in SafeSport, child protection, sustainability, and volunteer recognition. In 2026, it continued a sustainability support program for member clubs and prepared another DANKE-Abend to recognize volunteers and sporting achievement. SVW also maintains a large online tournament calendar and information network. Therefore, local clubs can publish events while players can follow tournaments, championships, league competition, training opportunities, and federation news from across Württemberg.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Dr. Carsten Karthaus is the current President of Schachverband Württemberg. The federation also has three Vice Presidents: Michael Meier, Yves Mutschelknaus, and Ottmar Seidler. Dr. Hubert Warsitz serves as Verbandsspielleiter and oversees important aspects of federation-level competition. Following the extended presidium meeting on July 11, 2026, Tom Gutknecht became Treasurer. For routine organizational correspondence, the federation office is managed by Thomas Wiedmann. Because the office handles central administrative communication for SVW, it provides the most practical general contact point for clubs, tournament organizers, and external organizations.
