SVKT Frankfurt Karbo 2020 e.V. is a German chess club and tournament organizer established in 2020. Its full name is Schachverein Königliche Trakehner Frankfurt Karbo 2020 e.V. The association developed in the Frankfurt and Rhine-Main chess community, with Edgar Winand playing a central role in its formation, competitive activities, and tournament organization.

The club’s distinctive name connects chess with the Trakehner horse, represented by the knight on the chessboard. “Karbo” combines references to Karben and Frankfurt-Bonames, areas associated with the club’s early activities. This identity has accompanied the organization across its team competitions, online events, and over-the-board tournaments.

SVKT Frankfurt Karbo entered official league competition within the Frankfurt chess district. At the same time, the association developed a strong focus on independently organized tournaments. Its activities have included classical chess, rapid chess, blitz chess, rating-group competitions, senior events, and online tournaments.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

Tournament organization is the most prominent part of the club’s work. SVKT Frankfurt Karbo has organized events for titled players, experienced competitors, club players, juniors, women, seniors, and participants from different rating categories.

One of its first significant events was the Adolf Anderssen Open, held in Frankfurt-Bonames in 2021. The classical tournament commemorated the famous German master Adolf Anderssen and attracted a field that included Grandmaster Paul Motwani and International Master Klaus Klundt. The playing venue also featured displays connected with Anderssen’s life and his celebrated games.

The club subsequently organized the Trakehner Open 2022, another multi-day classical tournament with national and international rating evaluation. It has also supported the FibC Rating Open series, which provides separate rating groups and long time controls designed for serious competitive chess.

In 2026, the organizer expanded its tournament activity in Bad Soden-Salmünster. Its program includes the Spessart Open, senior and veteran competitions, rapid and blitz events, and the Adolf-Anderssen Cup 2026. These tournaments are held at the Spessart Forum and provide FIDE-rated competition in several formats.

SVKT Frankfurt Karbo’s events generally follow Swiss-system formats and provide clear tournament schedules, published regulations, online entry, rating evaluation, and structured prize categories. Several competitions include separate awards for juniors, women, seniors, and players within specified rating groups.

The organizer places particular emphasis on classical chess with substantial thinking time. This format gives players the opportunity to prepare carefully, record their games, and compete for both FIDE ratings and German DWZ ratings. Rapid and blitz tournaments complement the classical program and allow participants to experience different forms of competitive chess.

The club also used online chess to maintain tournament activity during periods when over-the-board competition was restricted. It organized recurring Swiss tournaments on Lichess before returning to regular in-person competitions.
