Échecs Club de Corbas Mions (ECCM) is a major French chess club serving Corbas and Mions in the Lyon metropolitan area. Affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs under club code Q69077, the club combines competitive chess, structured coaching, youth development, adult training, team competition, and tournament organization. Its principal playing base is at the Maison des Associations in the Parc de Loisirs de Corbas, while additional training activities take place in Mions.

Training is central to the club’s identity. ECCM offers programs for beginners, intermediate players, advanced competitors, children, teenagers, and adults. Its structure includes regular in-person lessons, online training, mini-training camps, free-play sessions, tournament preparation, and team coaching. 🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development is one of the strongest parts of Échecs Club de Corbas Mions.

The club provides a progressive training pathway from introductory chess through advanced competitive preparation. Its weekly program includes several levels of instruction, specialized groups for ambitious young players, online courses, and regular training camps.

This approach has translated into substantial competitive success. At the 2025 French Youth Chess Championships, three ECCM players won national titles: Camille Billod-Laillet, Virgile Breuil, and Guillaume Garde. The combined results of the club’s strongest players also gave Corbas Mions first place in the national club classification.

The club continued its large-scale participation in 2026. Twenty-one ECCM youth players entered the French Youth Championships, marking the club’s 22nd participation in the event. The organization therefore maintains both a broad youth base and a pathway toward national and international competition.

♜ Team Chess

Échecs Club de Corbas Mions maintains a substantial team structure across several levels of French chess.

The club’s leading adult team competes in Nationale 1, while its top youth team competes in Top Jeunes, the highest national youth team championship in France. ECCM also competes in Nationale 1 Féminine.

Below these leading teams, the club operates additional adult and youth squads. This structure allows developing players to gain experience in official team chess while stronger competitors can progress toward national-level competition.

Team participation is therefore closely connected with the club’s training philosophy. Players develop through lessons and individual competition before gaining further experience by representing Corbas Mions in league and national events.

🏆 Open International de Corbas

The Open International de Corbas is one of ECCM’s principal recurring tournaments and a traditional part of the club’s winter calendar.

The tournament reaches its 17th edition from December 20–23, 2026, at Gymnase Jean Jaurès in Corbas.

The 2026 festival consists of two sections. Open A is played over seven rounds at a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Open B, designed for developing players and competitors below 1800 Elo, is played over 11 rounds at 50 minutes plus a 10-second increment.

By offering different formats within the same festival, ECCM provides suitable competitive opportunities for experienced tournament players as well as improving club players.

🌍 Open International d’Échecs des Menuires

In 2026, Échecs Club de Corbas Mions expanded its tournament activity beyond the Lyon area by partnering in the inaugural Open International d’Échecs des Menuires in the French Alps.

The first edition took place from July 11–18, 2026 and featured three parallel competitions: Masters, Accession, and Avenir.

The event attracted 222 players from 15 countries. The Masters tournament alone included 13 Grandmasters and seven International Masters, with 33 titled players in total.

Indian GM Rohith Krishna S won the Masters tournament ahead of GM Raja Rithvik R and Ukrainian GM Artem Omelja. The event also created opportunities for title norms; among the notable performances was a first open International Master norm for WGM Mariam Mkrtchyan.

Following the success of the inaugural edition, a second Open des Menuires is already included in the club’s 2027 tournament calendar.

⚡ Rapid and Seasonal Tournaments

ECCM organizes several additional tournaments during the season.

The Tournoi de Rentrée opens the competitive season. Its fifth edition takes place on September 26–27, 2026, at Espace Convergence in Mions. Two five-round tournaments provide separate sections for players below 2400 and below 1700 Elo.

Youth rapid chess also remains an established part of the club’s program. The 20th Tournoi Rapide Jeunes de Corbas took place on May 30, 2026 and attracted more than 150 young players. The tournament serves as the final stage of the Rhône youth rapid circuit.

The club’s 2026–2027 program also includes training events, internal competitions and, in 2027, an Easter Open, another youth rapid tournament, and the second Open International des Menuires.

📜 History and Development

Échecs Club de Corbas Mions traces its sporting development to 1998, which the club identifies as the starting point of the project that developed into today’s organization.

The current legal association was formally registered in 2001. Its declared purpose is the sporting practice of chess within its club facilities and elsewhere.

The organization expanded significantly during the following years. Historical club records show strong growth in youth participation, while national team competition and the French Youth Championships became increasingly important parts of its identity.

Over time, ECCM developed from a local chess structure into a large training and competition club. Today, its activities extend from introductory courses and community chess to Nationale 1, Top Jeunes, national championships, and international tournament organization.

🏛️ Organization and Governance

Sébastien Georges is the current President of Échecs Club de Corbas Mions.

The club’s executive committee also includes Vincent Beurois as Secretary and Marie-Cécile Georges as Treasurer. Additional committee members support the club’s competition, training, event, and administrative activities.
