The Thailand Chess Association, commonly known as TCA, is the national governing organization for international chess in Thailand. Based in Bangkok, the association represents Thailand within FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation. It is part of FIDE Zone 3.3, which brings together national federations from Southeast Asia.

The association coordinates official chess activity across the country. Its responsibilities include player registration, FIDE rating administration, national championships, international representation, tournament approval, arbiter development, and cooperation with chess clubs, academies, schools, and independent organizers.

Sahapol Nakvanich serves as President of the Thailand Chess Association. He also holds a senior role in regional chess as President of the ASEAN Chess Confederation. Together with federation officials, arbiters, trainers, tournament directors, and partner organizations, he supports the continued development of competitive chess in Thailand.

🏆 Championships and International Events

Thailand Chess Association organizes and supports classical, rapid, and blitz competitions for adults, women, juniors, and developing players. Its national program includes the Thailand Chess Championship, women’s competitions, youth events, rating tournaments, and the Thailand Chess Series.

The Thailand Chess Championship is the country’s principal national competition. The 49th edition took place in 2026 and featured nine rounds of FIDE-rated classical chess. Through these championships, leading Thai players can compete for national recognition and strengthen their preparation for international team and individual events.

The association also approves tournaments submitted for FIDE rating. Organizers must follow the federation’s application, technical, and reporting procedures before their events can be included in the international rating system. This provides a coordinated national structure for the growing number of rated tournaments held in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Pattaya, and other locations.

Thailand has also hosted several major international events under the association’s direction. The 2025 Asian Youth Chess Championships brought 697 young players from 33 countries to Thailand. The program included standard, rapid, and blitz championships for boys and girls from Under 8 through Under 18.

In 2026, the association partnered with WR Chess to organize the inaugural ASEAN E-Sports Chess Cup in Bangkok. The event featured leading Southeast Asian players alongside international stars and combined elite rapid chess with digital broadcasting, youth engagement, and esports presentation.

🎓 Youth Development and Chess Education

Youth development is a central part of the association’s work. Thailand Chess Association organizes age-group competitions that allow children to learn tournament procedures, use chess clocks, receive official ratings, and progress toward national and international competition.

The Thailand Chess Series provides additional opportunities for young players through separate age and gender categories. The association also cooperates with chess academies, schools, universities, local clubs, and regional organizers to expand access to structured chess instruction and competitive events.

Strong junior players may represent Thailand at ASEAN, Asian, and world youth championships. The federation also manages the selection and registration of Thai players for official international competitions, including team events and continental championships.

The association supports the professional development of tournament officials as well. Thailand has hosted FIDE arbiter seminars, examinations, and technical training programs. These activities help expand the number of qualified arbiters available to manage national and internationally rated competitions.

Thailand Chess Association also promotes chess as a tool for developing concentration, analytical thinking, strategic planning, and decision-making. Through national championships, international hosting, youth programs, and cooperation with local chess communities, the association continues to strengthen Thailand’s position within Asian and ASEAN chess.

Red Knight Chess Club is a chess club, academy, and tournament organizer in Bangkok, Thailand. The club operates from Prasarnmit Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 23 and also runs Red Knight Chess Café at Bambini Villa on Sukhumvit 26. Its main club venue offers tournament wooden chess sets, chess equipment, and a dedicated playing atmosphere for practice and competition. Red Knight Chess Club was founded by Riste Menkinoski and Loreshyl Cuizon, and it has become one of Bangkok’s most visible chess centers. The club works with children, families, school players, adult improvers, and competitive players. Moreover, it combines coaching, club events, chess retail, café activity, and tournament organization in one active Bangkok chess environment.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Red Knight Chess Club supports the Blue Chevaliers International Open in partnership with Blue Chevaliers. For the 2026 edition, Red Knight Chess Co. Ltd. also appears as the payment account holder for Thailand-based entrants. Beyond this Phuket event, the club organizes regular chess competitions of different sizes and levels in Bangkok. Its program includes monthly rapid and blitz tournaments, FIDE-rated rapid and blitz events, standard time control events, age-group tournaments, and large inter-school championships. Red Knight Chess Club has also organized major school competitions such as King’s Bangkok Chess Championship, Bangkok Patana Chess Championship, Chess Without Borders, and other youth events. Therefore, the club gives Bangkok players a steady calendar that ranges from beginner-friendly events to FIDE-rated competition.

Red Knight Chess Club supports youth chess and player development through structured training, camps, school events, and tournament preparation. Its coaching activity has helped many young players in Thailand become strong competitive chess players, including Thailand youth champions and tournament winners. The club also runs summer chess camps, casual chess evenings, coffee-and-chess sessions, and weekend events that make chess accessible outside formal tournaments. In addition, Red Knight Chess Café gives players another social venue for casual games, chess books, integrated chess tables, courses, and community activity. This mix helps children enter chess in a friendly setting, while stronger players can move toward rated tournaments and national-level goals. As a result, Red Knight Chess Club plays an important role in Bangkok’s chess education and tournament scene.

Blue Chevaliers is a strictly non-profit chess organizing group active in Thailand and South-East Asia. The group consists of Bami, David, Jeremi, Matthieu, Nicolas, and Peter, a team of international chess players who support serious over-the-board chess in the region. Their work focuses on strong classical events, fair playing conditions, and a welcoming tournament culture for players from many federations. Instead of operating as a venue or commercial academy, Blue Chevaliers functions as a dedicated tournament group. It brings practical organizing experience, player communication, and long-term commitment to standard time control chess. Peter Frost serves as the main public contact for tournament entries, Grandmaster accommodation, and player enquiries.

🏆 Tournament Portfolio

Blue Chevaliers presents the Blue Chevaliers International Open, an annual international chess tournament in Phuket, Thailand. The 2026 edition takes place at Novotel Phuket Resort and uses a 9-round Swiss system with a classical 90 minutes plus 30 seconds time control. The event also includes Bami’s Blitz, a FIDE-rated blitz side tournament that adds a fast-paced evening to the chess week. The tournament has developed a clear identity around serious classical chess, strong resort playing conditions, international participation, and a relaxed Andaman Sea setting. In 2026, the event offers a confirmed prize fund of 413,000 THB and a player limit of 130. As a result, it gives visiting players a compact but high-quality chess festival in one of Thailand’s best-known beach destinations.

🌱 Player Services and Regional Chess Development

Blue Chevaliers supports chess development by promoting standard time control tournaments and encouraging wider participation across Thailand and South-East Asia. The group especially values the 90/30 format and works to keep classical chess attractive for ambitious players, titled players, women, juniors, and serious club competitors. In addition, Blue Chevaliers publishes the online newsletter Tiger Chess!, which promotes and reports on standard tournaments in the region. The group also works with Red Knight Chess Club for the Blue Chevaliers International Open, while other chess organizations help with equipment and local support. This cooperation gives the event a practical regional network. Therefore, Blue Chevaliers plays a useful role in connecting visiting players with Thailand’s developing international chess scene.
