Club de Ajedrez Tajamar is a Madrid chess club linked to the Tajamar educational community in Puente de Vallecas, Spain. The club has been active since 2009. That year, it entered the Liga Madrileña with two teams and began building a clear competitive identity. For players, Tajamar offers more than a school activity. It provides a real club structure, steady training, and regular federated play. The club works from the Tajamar campus on Calle Pío Felipe, which gives it a stable home base in Madrid. It also keeps children, teenagers, families, and adult players inside the same chess environment. That combination is one of its main strengths. Héctor Elissalt Cárdenas, an International Master, has directed the school since 2013 and remains the clearest sporting face of the project.
🏆 Tournament Activity
Tajamar has a proven and varied tournament profile. It organizes the III Memorial Enrique Rojas Mengual 2026, following earlier editions in 2024 and 2025. The club also runs events such as the Open de Verano Ajedrez Tajamar, the Open Internacional de Ajedrez Semana Santa Tajamar, and the Open X Aniversario del Club de Ajedrez Tajamar. Earlier, it also staged the Octangular por Equipos Tajamar. This matters because the club does not rely on one annual event. Instead, it keeps a broader calendar that serves different player levels. In addition, Tajamar has hosted key chess days in Madrid. These include the district phase of the Juegos Municipales de Madrid in Vallecas and the regional youth final for the under-10 to under-16 categories. As a result, the club stays visible in both open and youth competition.
🌱 School Chess and Player Development
The strongest side of Tajamar is its player development system. Chess starts from age six and follows a structured school model. The club welcomes both Tajamar students and players from other schools. It now fields seven teams, which gives young players a direct path from lessons to match play. The results support that structure. In 2023, Tajamar reported first place in first division, first place in second division, bronze in third division, and runner-up in Preferente. It also finished fourth in the Spanish Championship for federated school teams. The daily setting remains important as well. Afternoon sessions bring together pupils, stronger players, parents, and trainee monitors in one space. Juan Antonio de los Ríos coordinates the school, while María Isabel Garralón Merino teaches and supports the secretariat. Therefore, Tajamar offers a clear route from beginner level to serious competition.
