♟️ About Swindon Chess Events
Swindon Chess Events is an independent chess tournament organizer based in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. It operates as a tournament brand rather than a traditional chess club and specializes in FIDE- and ECF-rated over-the-board competition. Its public tournament record dates from 2022, when it began organizing the Swindon FIDE Rapidplay series at the Polish Community Centre. The organizer now runs two main formats: its established Swindon Rapidplay series and the multi-day Swindon Chess Congress. Both use rating-based sections to provide suitable competition for players of different strengths. Swindon Chess Events has progressively expanded from one-day rapid tournaments into larger classical events, while retaining a practical structure based on FIDE and ECF rating, Swiss pairings, published entry lists, and clear prize schedules. Ben Ogunshola is the organizer and principal public contact for Swindon Chess Events. The English Chess Federation lists him as organizer of both the Swindon Rapidplay series and the Swindon Chess Congress. The organization’s principal 2026 event is the 2nd Swindon Chess Congress, scheduled for August 28–31 at STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.📜 Development of Swindon Chess Events
The first recorded Swindon FIDE Rapidplay was held on March 5, 2022, followed by a second edition on October 1 that year. The tournament then became a regular part of the calendar, with subsequent editions in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. By 2025, Swindon Chess Events had expanded its program beyond one-day rapidplay by launching the 1st Swindon Chess Congress. The inaugural congress took place from August 22–25, 2025 at the Great Western Hall inside STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway. It consisted of three FIDE- and ECF-rated sections: Open, U1900, and U1600. The Open section was won by GM Keith Arkell with 5/6, while the congress offered a minimum total prize fund of £3,000. Its introduction established a second major strand of activity for Swindon Chess Events alongside the rapidplay series.⚡ Swindon Rapidplay
The Swindon Rapidplay has developed into the organizer’s longest-running tournament series. Events are normally staged at the Polish Community Centre in Swindon and provide multiple rating sections rather than a single open competition. The 9th Swindon Rapidplay took place on March 7, 2026. It featured Open, U1800, and U1600 sections and was both FIDE and ECF rated. Games were played at 25 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move, with a minimum £600 prize fund. Earlier editions show the organizer adapting the rating sections as the player pool developed. The 2024 tournament used Open, U1900, U1700, and U1500 groups, while the October 2025 and March 2026 editions moved to a three-section Open, U1800, and U1600 structure.🏆 2nd Swindon Chess Congress 2026
The 2nd Swindon Chess Congress is scheduled for August 28–31, 2026 at the Great Western Hall of STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway, Fire Fly Avenue, Swindon. The venue provides capacity for more than 500 players and is located close to parking, restaurants, hotels, and Swindon’s main retail area. The congress consists of six Swiss-system rounds across three sections:- Open
- Under 1900
- Under 1600
🏛️ Organization
Swindon Chess Events is closely associated with Ben Ogunshola, who is consistently identified by the English Chess Federation as the organizer of its current competitions. He is also an active competitive chess player and has participated in Swindon events alongside his organizational work. The organization does not publish a separate permanent office or club headquarters. Its tournaments instead use dedicated event venues in Swindon, primarily the Polish Community Centre for rapidplay and the STEAM Museum for the classical congress. Therefore, a temporary tournament venue should not be treated as the organizer’s permanent address.
