2026 Charlotte Spring Open runs from May 1-3, 2026 in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. This is a chess tournament in Charlotte, United States, in 2026. The event takes place at the Hilton Garden Inn Charlotte/SouthPark and gives players both a 3-day and a 2-day schedule.
It is a classical chess tournament with a $6,000 guaranteed prize fund. Moreover, the main event offers $5,500 across three sections, while the free Saturday evening blitz adds another $500. As a result, players can compete for serious prizes and still enjoy an extra weekend side event.
The tournament also follows a clear entry and rating structure. For example, CCC sets a minimum entry rating of 1200, applies a 100-point rule for playing up, and caps the field at 140 players. In addition, all main sections count for both US Chess and FIDE rating, so the event appeals to ambitious weekend players.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The main event uses a five-round classical format. First, players choose either the 3-day or the 2-day schedule. In the 3-day option, CCC gives each player 110 minutes plus a 10-second increment for every move. In the 2-day option, CCC runs rounds 1 and 2 at G/30 + 10, and then those players join the common schedule for round 3 on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
CCC submits every section for US Chess rating. In addition, CCC also submits every main section for FIDE rating and applies FIDE rules in all rounds except rounds 1 and 2 of the 2-day schedule. Therefore, the event offers a serious rated structure while still giving players a faster entry path through the 2-day format.
CCC usually relies on the May 2026 US Chess supplement for pairings and prizes. However, when a player qualifies to play up under the 100-point rule, CCC may use that player’s most recent live rating if the supplement would otherwise block entry. Likewise, when a player qualified with a peak rating since April 1 but later dropped below the cutoff, CCC still lets that player enter the higher section and then uses the higher of the May supplement and most recent live rating.
For some foreign FIDE-rated players who lack a useful US Chess history, the chief TD may assign a US Chess rating. For ratings of 2000 and above, CCC applies the published formula 1.02 × FIDE + 20. Under 2000, CCC usually assigns the rating at par unless another federation rating offers a better guide. In rare cases, the chief TD may choose a different rating, although that assigned number never falls below the current US Chess supplement used for the event.
🏆 Prize Fund
The confirmed total cash prize fund is $6,000. Of that amount, $5,500 goes to the main event, while $500 goes to the free Saturday evening blitz. In addition, the Championship section awards 40 US Chess Grand Prix points.
| Section | Prize details |
|---|---|
| Championship | $1200, $600, $300; Top U2200 $400 |
| Under 2000 | $700, $400, $200; Top U1800 $300 |
| Under 1600 | $600, $300, $200; Top U1400 $300 |
| Free Spring Open Blitz | $200, $100, $60; Top U2000 $80; Top U1600 $60 |
CCC also gives plaques to first place in all three main sections. Therefore, each section offers both cash value and a clear title incentive.
👥 Sections / Groups
The tournament has three main rating sections. Each section offers both a 3-day entry and a 2-day entry, so players can choose the pace that fits them best. In addition, the event offers a separate Saturday night blitz.
| Section | Eligibility / rating basis | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Championship | Top section; 100-point rule applies for playing up | 40 Grand Prix points |
| Under 2000 | Under 2000 section | Main event section |
| Under 1600 | Under 1600 section | Main event section |
| 3-day schedule | Available in all three sections | Standard classical pace throughout |
| 2-day schedule | Available in all three sections | Rounds 1–2 at G/30 + 10, then merge into round 3 |
| Free Spring Open Blitz | Free for Spring Open players; others may enter on site for $30 cash | Saturday night blitz |
CCC applies the 100-point rule across the section structure. For example, a player generally needs 1900 or higher to enter the Championship section. Moreover, if a player registers for a section that does not match the published eligibility rules, CCC moves that player to the proper section.
