Društvo perojskih Crnogoraca “Peroj 1657” is a cultural, community, and sporting association based in Peroj, near Vodnjan, in the Istria region of Croatia. Its name can be translated as the Association of Montenegrins of Peroj. The organization was founded in 2000 and was subsequently entered in the official register of associations.

The association works to preserve the identity, history, language, customs, music, and cultural heritage of the Montenegrin community that settled in Peroj in 1657. This community has maintained its connection with Montenegro while contributing to the multicultural character of Peroj, Vodnjan, and the wider Istrian region.

Miodrag Popović serves as president of Društvo perojskih Crnogoraca “Peroj 1657.” Nikola Škoko is the association’s secretary and plays an important role in its cultural programs and chess tournaments. They work with association members, volunteers, local authorities, cultural organizations, chess arbiters, and regional sporting partners.

🏆 Chess Tournaments and Sporting Activity

Chess is one of the association’s principal sporting activities. DPC 1657 Peroj organizes recurring rapid and blitz competitions at Dom mladih, the community youth hall in Peroj. These tournaments bring together local players, juniors, veterans, titled competitors, and visiting participants from Croatia and neighboring federations.

One of its principal events is the annual Open Rapid Tournament “Peroj.” The competition reached its twelfth edition in 2026 and was organized jointly with the City of Vodnjan. The tournament provides internationally rated rapid chess and includes a broad range of general and special prizes.

The association also organizes the Duško Srdić – Dule Memorial, established in memory of a respected long-standing member, neighbor, and chess enthusiast. The memorial reached its sixth edition in 2026 and featured eleven rounds of FIDE-rated blitz chess.

DPC 1657 Peroj works with experienced arbiters and regional chess organizations to provide pairings, tournament equipment, rating submissions, technical administration, and published results. Previous events have received support from the Istrian chess community, the City of Vodnjan, ŠahIstra, and other local partners.

The association’s chess tournaments are known for combining competitive play with community hospitality. Participants can compete for overall prizes as well as awards for women, juniors, younger players, veterans, foreign participants, and members of the local Peroj community.

🌍 Culture, Heritage and Community Life

The association’s work extends well beyond chess. Its principal activities include singing, folklore, cultural preservation, exhibitions, traditional celebrations, community events, and sporting programs.

The singing section preserves traditional songs and the distinctive vocal style associated with Peroj. Meanwhile, the folklore section performs Montenegrin dances, the traditional Istrian balun, and staged presentations connected with the history and customs of the community.

The association also maintains the Njegoš Library, which preserves an extensive collection of books and documents. Its cultural-heritage section researches family histories, the Peroj dialect, Cyrillic writing, religious traditions, local customs, and the history of the Montenegrin families who settled in the village.

Each year, the organization participates in the commemoration of the arrival of the Montenegrin community in Peroj. The wider program includes cultural performances, exhibitions, religious observances, traditional music, visiting folklore groups, and sporting activities.

Through chess tournaments, cultural programs, historical preservation, and community cooperation, Društvo perojskih Crnogoraca “Peroj 1657” supports both the sporting life of Peroj and the continued preservation of its distinctive local heritage.
