Organizer
Katerini Chess Club is one of the oldest and most historic chess clubs in Greece. Founded in 1954, it has been a constant presence in national team competitions and major Greek events for more than half a century. The club represents the city of Katerini and the wider Pieria region, combining sporting ambition with a strong local identity.
Today, the club focuses on both competitive success and youth development. Training sessions are held in cooperation with local schools and at the club’s base in Katerini, where children from about 6 to 12 years old receive systematic coaching. Moreover, the first team competes in regional and national leagues, while younger players gain experience through school championships and junior tournaments. As a result, the club serves as a full pathway from beginner to serious tournament player.
In addition, Katerini Chess Club is very active as an organiser. It runs local, regional and national events and now also international opens such as the 3rd International Open Chess Tournament of Katerini at the Mediterranean Village Hotel & Spa. These tournaments follow FIDE rules, use Swiss pairings and offer a professional yet friendly environment by the sea. This blend of sporting quality and hospitality has made Katerini Chess Club a recognizable name on the Greek tournament map.
