♟️ About WizChess Academy

WizChess Academy is a FIDE-endorsed chess academy based in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea. The academy combines structured chess education with competitive player development and the organization of FIDE-rated tournaments. It operates within Incheon’s organized chess community and works alongside the Incheon Chess Federation, Yeonsu-gu Chess Federation, schools, public institutions, and regional sports organizations. WizChess offers programs for children, competitive juniors, adult players, parents, and aspiring chess instructors. Its system includes progressive training from introductory to advanced levels, a Global Masters Program for international competition, a professional player squad, a Kids Program, a Coaching Academy, and a regular Membership Chess Club. International competition and exchange are important parts of its approach, with academy players participating in events and training activities in countries including Georgia, Mongolia, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Jeong Geunyeong is the Director of WizChess Academy and a FIDE National Instructor. He also serves as Tournament Director for the Korea International Chess Festival 2026, scheduled in Incheon from November 3–8. The academy has been particularly active during 2026, organizing the Songdo International Chess Open, regional rated competitions, youth events, and the upcoming multi-format Korea International Chess Festival.

🎓 Player Development and Coaching

WizChess structures its principal training program into several progressive levels, allowing students to move from introductory chess toward advanced competitive preparation. The academy supplements technical instruction with tournament preparation, game analysis, rating monitoring, and practical competitive experience. Its Global Masters Program is designed for players preparing for international events. WizChess also operates a professional chess squad supported by Korean and international coaches. The current coaching team includes instructors from South Korea as well as coaches with international competitive experience. Youth development is a particularly prominent part of the academy’s activity. WizChess reports producing 41 Korean youth national-team selections between 2022 and 2025. Its students have also earned titles and international results at Asian and world youth competitions.

🌍 International Development

WizChess became a FIDE Endorsed Academy in 2025, with FIDE listing the organization as a Tier 3 academy under Director Jeong Geunyeong. The academy has developed international relationships to give Korean juniors broader competitive experience. Its published network includes cooperation with NONA Chess Club in Batumi, Gegeen Arvai Chess Club in Mongolia, tournament activity in Prague and Taiwan, and participation at the historic Hastings International Chess Congress in England. This international orientation also influences WizChess tournament organization in Korea. Its events are designed to bring foreign competitors together with developing Korean players, creating opportunities for international rating and cross-border competition without requiring young players to travel overseas.

🏆 Tournament Activity in 2026

WizChess Academy has maintained an active tournament program throughout 2026. In April, its venue hosted the 3rd Yeonsu-gu Chess Federation President’s Cup Standard Chess Tournament, a four-round competition requiring FIDE IDs from participants. A larger international event followed on May 23–24, 2026, when WizChess Academy, Incheon Chess Federation, and Yeonsu-gu Chess Federation jointly organized the Songdo International Chess Open 2026 Korea at Songdo Convensia. The tournament attracted approximately 90 players from nine countries, including South Korea, India, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Russia, Japan, and Germany. It featured two FIDE-rated Standard sections over six rounds. IM Lee Junhyeok won Open A, while Kim Haechan finished first in Open B. The academy has also continued its community program through youth competitions, rating events, chess qualification activities, and its monthly Membership Chess Club.

🌟 Korea International Chess Festival 2026

The academy’s principal upcoming event is the Korea International Chess Festival 2026, scheduled for November 3–8, 2026 in Incheon. WizChess Academy organizes the festival together with the Incheon Chess Federation and Yeonsu-gu Chess Federation, with additional partners involved in individual parts of the program. The festival begins with two FIDE-rated Standard Open sections from November 3–6 at Holiday Inn Incheon Songdo. Both are seven-round Swiss tournaments played at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The published prize fund for the Standard Open is KRW 10,000,000. A nine-round Blitz tournament follows on November 7 with a 3+2 time control. On November 8, the festival concludes with FIDE-rated Rapid competitions at Incheon Global Campus Gymnasium, including an Open and youth sections from U06 through U12. Jeong Geunyeong serves as Tournament Director throughout the festival. Choi Junil is Chief Arbiter, with Lee Kisook serving as Deputy Chief Arbiter.

🏛️ Academy and Community

WizChess combines elite development with broader chess participation. Its Membership Chess Club meets regularly for casual games, mini-tournaments, puzzles, and game review, creating a community environment for players of different ages and playing strengths. The academy also runs a Coaching Academy aimed at developing chess instructors. The program includes chess teaching methodology, FIDE rules, tournament preparation, basic arbiting, practical teaching exercises, and assessment. In 2025, WizChess was recognized by the Yeonsu-gu Sports Council as an outstanding sports organization. Its combination of youth development, international competition, coach education, and tournament organization continues to expand its role within the South Korean chess community.
