♟️ About Mallorca Chess Events (WinterChess)

Mallorca Chess Events is a chess-event association based in the Balearic Islands, Spain, operating publicly under the WinterChess brand. The organization has been active for more than a decade and specializes in organizing chess tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, conferences, and other chess-related projects across Mallorca. Its approach frequently combines competitive chess with tourism, making use of hotels and other destinations around the island as tournament venues. WinterChess has organized and supported a wide range of FIDE-rated international Opens, amateur competitions, youth tournaments, rapid and blitz events, and official championship projects. It has also collaborated with the Federació Balear d’Escacs (FBE) and the Federación Española de Ajedrez (FEDA). Its historical portfolio includes nine editions of the International Open of Llucmajor, five Spanish championship events organized in cooperation with FEDA, simultaneous exhibitions involving elite players, and participation in the organization of the 2017 FIDE Grand Prix Final in Palma de Mallorca. The organization remains highly active in 2026. Its calendar includes local and FIDE-rated tournaments throughout the year, including the Open Isla de Mallorca series, amateur and rating-restricted competitions, and several autumn events. Its principal upcoming project is the Mallorca Amateur Open, scheduled for October 2–4, 2026 in Palma de Mallorca, with separate Under-2400 and Under-1800 classical sections. Registration and tournament communication are managed directly through WinterChess.

📜 Tournament Organization in Mallorca

WinterChess has developed its identity around frequent tournament organization rather than a traditional membership-based club structure. Its events range from small local competitions to international Opens with titled players. Over the years, the organization has worked at venues across Mallorca and has frequently cooperated with hotels, local chess clubs, municipal institutions, and federation bodies. One of its most significant historical projects was the International Open of Llucmajor. WinterChess reports organizing nine editions of the tournament, which attracted more than 24 grandmasters across different years. The organization also collaborated with FEDA on five Spanish Chess Championships, including two individual Absolute Championships, two team championships, and one senior championship.

🌍 International Chess Projects

Mallorca Chess Events has experience beyond conventional open tournaments. In March 2011, the organization staged simultaneous chess exhibitions involving Magnus Carlsen, who was already the world’s top-ranked player at the time. Another major milestone came in 2017, when WinterChess participated alongside FEDA and the Balearic Chess Federation in organizing the FIDE Grand Prix Final in Palma de Mallorca. The event brought several of the world’s leading grandmasters to the island. WinterChess has also supported chess-related cultural activities, including the Chessy Awards, and was involved during the 2017 Guinness-record chess marathon achieved by Juan Oliver and Antonio Nadal.

🏆 2026 Tournament Activity

The organization continues to run a dense competition calendar in 2026. Its current program includes tournaments such as the Open Mallorca Amateur S2400, Open Mallorca Amateur S1800, school events, local blitz competitions, and the traditional Christmas tournament. WinterChess also provides tournament information and registration support for a broader range of chess events taking place around Mallorca. Earlier in 2026, WinterChess also collaborated on events recognized by the Federació Balear d’Escacs, including the III Open Isla de Mallorca Sub-1600. This continued its long-standing cooperation with the official Balearic chess structure. The organization’s events serve a wide range of players, from juniors and amateurs to internationally rated competitors.

🌟 Mallorca Amateur Open 2026

The Mallorca Amateur Open 2026 is one of WinterChess’s principal autumn projects and consists of two parallel FIDE-rated classical tournaments. The event is scheduled for October 2–4, 2026 at the GPRO Valparaiso Palace & Spa in Palma de Mallorca. The two sections are Under-2400 and Under-1800. The S2400 tournament is open to players with a FIDE rating below 2400 based on the October 1, 2026 rating list. It consists of seven rounds with a time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and carries €2,700 in prizes. The parallel S1800 tournament uses the same seven-round structure for players rated below 1800 and offers an additional prize fund. Together, the two competitions provide a compact international weekend format for amateur and developing players. Registration is handled directly through WinterChess by email, WhatsApp, or the tournament website.

🤝 Chess and Tourism

A distinctive element of Mallorca Chess Events is its combination of chess and tourism. Many of its tournaments are held at hotels and tourist destinations across Mallorca. This allows visiting players to combine FIDE-rated competition with accommodation and leisure on the island. The organization has maintained this approach across international Opens, championships, and smaller events. As a result, WinterChess functions primarily as a chess-event and tournament-development association, rather than as a conventional local chess club.
