Viyugam Chess Academy is a chess training institution and tournament organizer with branches in Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Hosur, Tamil Nadu, India. The academy began in 2014 after chess players Surendran N, Sekar B, Lokesh N, and Pradeep discussed creating a professional chess training center.

The academy now operates three confirmed branches. Surendran N manages the Thiruninravur branch, Sekar B is listed for the Kolathur branch, and Lokesh N is the contact for the Hosur branch. All three are experienced FIDE-rated players and coaches.

Viyugam Chess Academy offers individual coaching, group training, online lessons, and an intensive stay-and-learn program. Its courses serve beginners, intermediate players, and advanced tournament players. The official website also lists a wider coaching team that supports students at different playing levels.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

Viyugam Chess Academy organizes and supports FIDE-rated tournaments in Tamil Nadu. Its confirmed activities include international open tournaments, rating-restricted events, academy competitions, and national championship events organized with partner academies and chess authorities.

The Viyugam Chess Academy International FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament 2026 takes place from August 12 to 16, 2026, at the Hall of Chess, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The event uses a 9-round Swiss-system format. Each player receives 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Chess-Results lists Lokesh N as tournament director and IA Arasu B as chief arbiter.

The published tournament package includes ₹600,000 in cash prizes, 12 smart televisions, and 10 chess clocks. AICF lists the tournament under event code 478180/TN/2026, while the Tamil Nadu Chess Association lists it under approval number RO-17/CHE/26-27.

The academy also organized an International FIDE Rated Below-1600 Open in Chennai in January 2026. That event featured nine rounds and FIDE rating calculation. Viyugam Chess Academy also worked with Ananthi Chess Academy on the 13th National Amateur Chess Championship 2026 in Hosur, where Lokesh N served as organizing secretary.

🌍 Chess Training and Player Development

Viyugam Chess Academy combines regular instruction with practical tournament experience. Students can attend in-person programs at its branches or join online coaching. The training structure includes game analysis, tactical and strategic work, guided practice, and preparation for competitive events.

The academy’s three-branch structure gives players access to coaching in different parts of Tamil Nadu. Its Thiruninravur and Kolathur branches serve the Chennai and Thiruvallur areas, while the Hosur branch supports players closer to the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border.

Through coaching, academy events, national competitions, and international FIDE-rated tournaments, Viyugam Chess Academy creates a route from chess instruction to formal competition. Its current tournament work includes both open events and rating-category competitions for players seeking official over-the-board experience.
