♟️ About UAE Chess Federation

The UAE Chess Federation is the national governing body for chess in the United Arab Emirates. Established in August 1976, the federation is a nonprofit sports organization responsible for developing, regulating, and organizing chess across the country. It joined the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1977 and the Arab Chess Federation in the same year. Today, it works through an extensive network of affiliated clubs in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ain, and other Emirates. The federation manages national championships, youth competitions, rapid and blitz events, club tournaments, FIDE registration, player development, training, and international representation. Its official 2026 figures list 18 affiliated chess clubs, more than 1,600 registered players, 35 events, and more than 2,000 students trained. Development programs range from traditional over-the-board championships to school initiatives such as the Chess Digital League, while leading clubs across the Emirates stage major international events. Dr. Ismaeil Ebrahim Alkhouri is the current President of the UAE Chess Federation. A new Board of Directors for the 2025–2028 term was formally approved on June 14, 2026, with Abdulla Hasan Alhammadi serving as General Secretary. The leadership transition coincided with the federation’s 50th anniversary in 2026, a year that included national championships for all major age groups, Golden Jubilee tournaments in Dubai, expanded school chess programs, and preparations for the UAE’s next major global milestone: the 47th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Abu Dhabi in 2028.

📜 Fifty Years of UAE Chess

The UAE Chess Federation was founded in 1976 to promote chess as both a competitive sport and an intellectual and cultural activity throughout the Emirates. Its international integration followed quickly. The federation became a FIDE member in 1977, and the UAE subsequently developed a strong chess infrastructure built around clubs in the country’s principal cities. In 2026, the federation marked its Golden Jubilee, celebrating 50 years of organized national chess. The anniversary program emphasized both the history of UAE chess and future priorities such as wider participation, stronger youth pathways, club development, international competition, and preparation for major global events.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

The current Board of Directors is headed by Dr. Ismaeil Ebrahim Alkhouri, who was confirmed as President for the 2025–2028 cycle in June 2026. Fouad Fahmi Darwish serves as First Vice President. MHD Waseem Khayata is Second Vice President and Financial Secretary, while Abdulla Hasan Alhammadi is General Secretary. The board also includes specialized leadership for marketing and sponsorship, media and corporate communications, events, community initiatives, and other areas of federation development. The federation currently lists 18 affiliated clubs, including the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, Abu Dhabi Chess and Culture Club, Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club, Fujairah Chess & Culture Club, Ajman Chess & Cultural Club, and Al Ain Chess and Mind Games.

🏆 UAE National Championships

The UAE Individual Chess Championships form a central part of the federation’s domestic calendar. In July 2026, Dubai Chess and Culture Club hosted the Open, Women’s, U8, and U10 national championships. A total of 204 players from clubs across the UAE participated. IM Omran Al Hosani won the 2026 UAE Open Championship, while WGM Rouda Alserkal captured the Women’s national title. Both represent Abu Dhabi Chess and Mind Games Club. The national youth program continued in Fujairah with championships for U12, U14, U16, U18, and U20, divided into Open and Girls categories. These competitions attracted another 152 players, giving the federation a broad national championship structure from the youngest age groups through senior competition.

🎓 Youth Chess and Chess Digital League

Developing young players is one of the federation’s principal strategic priorities. Its programs combine club-based instruction, national age-group championships, school chess, online competition, and pathways toward international representation. A major new initiative in 2026 was the Chess Digital League, organized in cooperation with the UAE Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Education, and UAE School and University Sports Federation. The league was open to students across the country and divided players according to the three main school cycles. Qualification rounds were played online on April 14 and 16, 2026, followed by an Elite Championship for 18 finalists. The initiative offered a prize pool exceeding AED 60,000 and was designed both to expand school participation and to identify talented young players who could progress into stronger competitive programs.

🌟 Golden Jubilee Chess Events

The federation celebrated its 50th anniversary with a series of Golden Jubilee chess events in Dubai in August 2026. The international blitz competition for players rated above 2000 attracted around 150 competitors. Chinese Grandmaster Wang Hao won the tournament with 7.5/9, finishing ahead of Uzbek IM Muhammadzoхid Suyarov on tiebreak. Russian GM Alexander Rakhmanov finished third. A parallel Golden Jubilee competition for players below 2000 attracted 192 participants. Nigerian player Fawad Olabode won with 8/9, ahead of Armenia’s Artur Garagyozyan and India’s Kapil Raghav. The events also included awards for leading Emirati players. Consequently, the Golden Jubilee program combined international participation with opportunities for UAE national-team and club players to gain additional competitive experience.

🌍 International Chess and the 2028 Olympiad

The UAE has become a major destination for international chess. Its clubs organize established events such as the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, Dubai tournaments, Sharjah Masters, and other competitions that regularly attract leading grandmasters and large international fields. The country’s most important upcoming project is the 47th FIDE Chess Olympiad, which will take place in Abu Dhabi from October 28 to November 11, 2028 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Abu Dhabi won the hosting vote in December 2023 following a joint bid by the UAE Chess Federation and Abu Dhabi Sports Council. The agreement also covers the FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities and the FIDE Congress. It will be the second Chess Olympiad hosted by the United Arab Emirates, following the historic Dubai Olympiad in 1986. Preparations for 2028 are therefore an important part of the federation’s current strategic agenda.
