TV Freiberg 1844 e.V. – Abteilung Schach is the chess section of the historic multi-sport association TV Freiberg 1844 e.V., based in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany. The chess section was established on March 15, 1947, while the parent sports association traces its origins to 1844. Today, the section belongs to the organized chess structure of the Schachverband Sachsen and provides competitive and recreational chess for adults, students, children, and young players. The section combines regional team competition with regular training, youth development, school chess, rapid and blitz events, and public tournaments. Its principal Friday club evening takes place at Brauhof Freiberg, while additional training is offered at the Saxonia Innovation Centre and Pi-Haus. Moreover, the club cooperates with TU Bergakademie Freiberg on university chess activities and supports competitions that introduce younger players to organized chess. Thomas Radke is the current Head of the Chess Section and the principal club contact. The 2025–2026 season produced an important sporting milestone: both of Freiberg’s principal adult teams won their respective divisions and secured promotion. The first team advanced from the Bezirksliga to the Landesklasse. In addition, the section is preparing two notable events for autumn 2026: Freiberg spielt den Silbercup on September 6 and the Open Saxon University Blitz Chess Championship on October 31.

📜 History and Development

TV Freiberg 1844 e.V. has a long sporting history that predates the chess section by more than a century. The original Freiberg gymnastics association was founded on November 24, 1844. After the disruption caused by World War II, organized chess became part of the association’s activities with the establishment of its chess section on March 15, 1947. During the postwar period, sport in Freiberg underwent several organizational changes. The club later became part of the BSG structures used in East Germany, while chess continued as one of its sporting sections. Following German reunification, the association restored its historic Turnverein Freiberg 1844 e.V. name in 1990. The chess section subsequently continued within the revived multi-sport club and today competes officially as TV Freiberg 1844 in the Saxon chess federation.

♜ Team Chess and the 2025–2026 Season

Team competition remains one of the section’s principal activities. During the 2025–2026 season, Freiberg’s teams competed in the Bezirksliga and 2. Bezirksklasse A, alongside additional participation in regional competition. The season ended with an exceptional double success. On the final match day in April 2026, both leading Freiberg teams won their divisions and earned promotion. The first team secured the Bezirksliga championship after defeating SV Markneukirchen 5–3 in its final match. Consequently, Freiberg earned promotion to the Landesklasse. The second team also completed its season as division champion and moved into a higher regional league. This double promotion marked one of the section’s strongest recent team achievements and gives Freiberg a higher competitive starting point for the 2026–2027 season.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

TV Freiberg 1844 offers several opportunities for chess training throughout the week. Children and young players can attend the chess group at Pi-Haus Freiberg on Tuesdays from 15:30 to 16:30. Additional sessions for adults, students, and school-age players take place at the Saxonia Innovation Centre (SIZ). In 2026, the section expanded this program with further evening training and a more advanced Thursday session. The traditional Friday club evening begins at 20:00 at Brauhof Freiberg. Guests are welcome, allowing prospective members to visit the club, play games, and meet local players before joining. The section also supports school chess. Recent activities have included an open Freiberg U16 school championship and cooperation with local educational institutions. Therefore, its training program connects introductory chess with club competition and regional tournaments.

🏆 Freiberg spielt den Silbercup 2026

The 2nd Freiberg spielt den Silbercup is scheduled for September 6, 2026 at the Städtischer Festsaal on Obermarkt in central Freiberg. The tournament follows the inaugural Silbercup held in June 2025. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds at a rapid time control of 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move. The 2026 competition is submitted for FIDE Rapid rating and has a maximum capacity of 80 players. Jakob Thierauch serves as Tournament Director, while Burkhard Atze is Chief Arbiter. The competition includes trophies for the top three overall finishers, the leading female player, and the best junior. Additional cash prizes are planned if participation reaches the level specified in the regulations. The move to the Städtischer Festsaal gives the second edition a prominent venue in Freiberg’s historic center and continues the section’s expansion into publicly accessible FIDE-rated events.

⚡ Open Saxon University Blitz Chess Championship 2026

TV Freiberg 1844 will also cooperate with TU Bergakademie Freiberg and its University Sports Centre to organize the Offene sächsische Hochschulmeisterschaft im Blitzschach on October 31, 2026. The tournament will take place at the Saxonia Innovation Centre, Prüferstraße 2, in Freiberg. Players compete at 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move, and the event is FIDE-rated. Participation is open beyond the university community, while students and employees of Saxon universities and higher-education institutions compete simultaneously for the official Saxon university championship classification. The field is limited to 36 players. This cooperation with TU Bergakademie strengthens the section’s connection with Freiberg’s large university community and adds another internationally rated competition to its 2026 calendar.
