TV Freiberg 1844 e.V. – Chess Section

♟️ About the Organizer

TV Freiberg 1844 e.V. – Chess Section is an active chess organization based in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany. It forms part of TV Freiberg 1844 e.V., a historic multi-sport association that supports several sporting disciplines within the city.

The chess section welcomes children, young players, adults, and experienced competitors. Members can attend training sessions, play informal games, enter club tournaments, and represent Freiberg in regional team competitions.

Peter Vedder serves as Head of the Chess Section. The club holds its regular Friday chess evenings at Brauhof Freiberg. Guests may visit the training sessions and meet local players before deciding whether to join.

The section also runs an additional Thursday training session at the Saxonia Innovation Centre. Therefore, members have several opportunities to practice, analyze games, and prepare for competition.

🏆 Tournaments and Team Chess

TV Freiberg 1844 organizes rapid, blitz, school, and team chess events. Its principal public tournament is Freiberg spielt den Silbercup, a FIDE-rated rapid competition held in the historic center of Freiberg.

The Silbercup welcomes adult and junior players from different clubs and national federations. The tournament combines competitive chess with the atmosphere of Freiberg’s old town. It offers trophies for the leading players and special awards for female and youth participants.

The club also cooperates with TU Bergakademie Freiberg on the Open Saxon University Blitz Chess Championship. This FIDE-rated event welcomes university representatives as well as other eligible players.

In addition, the chess section supports local school competitions. Recent activities have included the Open Freiberg U16 School Chess Championship, organized with Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium.

Team chess remains another important part of the club’s program. In the 2025–2026 season, both adult teams won their respective divisions and secured promotion. The first team advanced to the Landesklasse, while the second team also moved into a higher regional division.

🌱 Junior Chess and Club Development

The club provides regular chess activities for children and young people. Lars Herold leads the junior training group at Pi-Haus Freiberg. Sessions focus on practical play, tactics, basic strategy, and preparation for junior competitions.

Young players can also represent the club in regional youth leagues. Moreover, school tournaments give beginners a suitable introduction to organized chess without requiring extensive tournament experience.

The chess section aims to combine serious competition with an open club atmosphere. Beginners can learn from established members, while stronger players can compete in rated tournaments and regional leagues.

Through training, tournaments, school cooperation, and team competition, TV Freiberg 1844 continues to support chess development in Freiberg and the surrounding region.
