Torbay Chess Congress is a long-running annual chess tournament organization based around Torquay in Devon, England. Rather than operating as a conventional chess club, it functions as a volunteer-run congress, administered by its Congress Organiser, Congress Secretary, and supporting committee. The event is held on the English Riviera and forms part of the established over-the-board chess program in South West England. The congress follows a traditional English weekend format with four seeded five-round Swiss tournaments. The Open is both FIDE and ECF rated, while the Major, Intermediate, and Foundation sections are ECF rated and provide rating-limited competition for a broad range of club players. Recent editions have attracted close to the congress capacity of 150 players; the 57th edition in 2025 finished with 149 entrants across its four sections. Paul Brooks is the current Congress Organiser and primary public contact, while Phil McConnell serves as Congress Secretary and handles entries, finances, and much of the congress website administration. 📜 History and Development

Torbay Chess Congress has been part of the Devon chess calendar for many decades. The documented 45th Torbay Congress was held in November 2011 at the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torquay, where four Swiss sections were already operating under a structure similar to the present congress. The official congress archive preserves reports and results from numerous editions, including tournaments from 2011 onward. After the interruption to the normal calendar around 2020–2021, the congress returned with editions in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. The 57th Torbay Chess Congress, held from October 31 to November 2, 2025, reached 149 players despite an entry limit of 150 and an additional waiting list. The 2025 Open was won by Harry Grieve with a perfect 5/5, while Grandmaster Keith Arkell was among the players sharing second place. The congress continues to attract competitors from clubs across Devon, the wider South West, and other parts of England.

🏆 58th Torbay Chess Congress 2026

The 58th Torbay Chess Congress will take place from November 20–22, 2026 at the TLH Carlton Hotel, Torquay. The congress moved to the Carlton for the 2026 edition, and the current official congress website and English Chess Federation calendar both confirm the new dates and venue. Four five-round Swiss tournaments are scheduled:

• Open – no upper rating limit; FIDE and ECF rated
• Major – for players rated under 1950; ECF rated
• Intermediate – for players rated under 1700; ECF rated
• Foundation – for players rated under 1500; ECF rated

The time control for all sections is 90 minutes for the game plus a 30-second increment from move one. Round 1 starts on Friday evening, followed by two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday. The total entry is limited to 150 players, with places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

🤝 Organization and Support

Torbay Chess Congress is organized through a small experienced team rather than a large permanent institution. Paul Brooks leads the congress as Organiser. Phil McConnell manages entries and finances and is responsible for creating and maintaining the congress website. Tony Tatam is also closely involved with arbitration, pairings, and rating submissions. The congress also works with local chess clubs, arbiters, volunteers, and its hotel venue. Current sponsors include Kitson Boyce Solicitors and ChessPick. This volunteer-led structure has allowed the congress to maintain its established weekend format while continuing to provide FIDE-rated competition in its Open section.
