Tirol Chess Federation

♟️ Federation Overview

Tirol Chess Federation is the regional chess federation for Tyrol, Austria. Its official name is Österreichischer Schachbund Landesverband Tirol, and its seat is in Innsbruck. For chess players in Tyrol, this is the main body behind the state competition structure. It also manages many of the biggest official events and much of the organized chess activity across the province. The federation brings together clubs from across Tyrol. Moreover, it gives players a common framework for league chess, individual championships, youth events, school chess, and training activity. Ina Anker is the current president.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Tournament chess is one of the federation’s most visible strengths. In 2026, it is organizing the 3rd Schach Tirol Open in Innsbruck from August 22 to 29 at the Haus der Begegnung. The event is played over nine rounds and is split into A, B, and C groups. This makes it accessible to players at different rating levels. Beyond that flagship open, the federation runs the Tyrolean team championship structure. This includes the Landesliga and lower divisions such as the Gebietsklasse. It also plays a visible role in national-level events held in Tyrol. In 2025, Innsbruck hosted the Austrian rapid and blitz championships with federation president Ina Anker named as the contact person. For players, this means the federation is not just an administrative body. Instead, it is a real organizer of classical, rapid, blitz, team, and open chess in Tyrol.

🌱 Youth and School Chess

Youth chess is also a major part of the federation’s work. In January 2026, the federation ran the Tyrolean Youth Individual Championships for the U8 to U18 age groups. In the same season, it scheduled the 50th Tyrolean School Team Championship 2025/2026 in Innsbruck. It also supports the Jugendschachrallye, a recurring youth tournament series that brings competitive chess to different towns in Tyrol. This includes Telfs. This matters for players and families because it creates a visible pathway from school chess and junior events to stronger tournament practice and later team competition. The federation therefore serves both ambitious competitive players and younger players who are still building experience.
