♟️ About Tatrafest

Tatrafest – Tatranský šachový festival is a Slovak chess-festival project centered on the High Tatras and particularly Tatranské Matliare. The modern Tatrafest concept was introduced in 2022, when Nadácia 42, led by Mgr. Vladimír Hrtko, PhD., took over the organizational tradition of the spring Tatra chess events. Tatrafest is therefore best understood as a tournament and festival brand rather than a conventional chess club. Its program connects classical chess, senior championships, blitz tournaments, accommodation, and the distinctive mountain setting of the High Tatras. The festival builds on one of Slovakia’s longest chess traditions. The historic Tatranský pohár (Tatra Cup) was first held in 1952 and later developed into the Open Tatry tournament tradition. Under the Tatrafest identity, the program has included Open Tatry, the Slovak Senior Championship 65+, SeniorBlesk, Tatranský pohár, and TatraBlesk. Different legal organizers cooperate under the festival umbrella: Nadácia 42 manages the spring senior program, while recent autumn Tatranský pohár editions have been organized by OBLS s.r.o. in cooperation with ŠK Dúbravan. Mgr. Vladimír Hrtko, PhD. is the principal organizer and public contact for the spring Tatrafest program and serves as Tournament Director of Open Tatry and the Slovak senior championships. The 2026 spring festival took place from May 16–23 at Hotel SOREA Hutník in Tatranské Matliare, combining Open Tatry 30+, the 21st Slovak Senior Championship 65+, and SeniorBlesk. FM Tomáš Vojta won Open Tatry 30+ with 7/8, while FM Karol Motuz won the 65+ championship with the same score.

📜 Tatra Chess Tradition

The chess Tatranský pohár began in 1952 in Nový Smokovec, with Ján Erhg winning the inaugural edition. Over subsequent decades, the tournament moved among several High Tatras locations and developed from closed events into a broader international open structure. A major period of continuity came through organizers connected with ŠK Slovan Bratislava. The tournament survived changing formats, locations, and organizational teams while becoming a regular meeting point for Slovak and international players. In 2022, Nadácia 42 took over the spring organizational role and introduced the broader Tatrafest concept under Vladimír Hrtko. This structure brought senior championships, Open Tatry, blitz events, and accompanying chess activities together under one festival identity.

🏆 Open Tatry and Senior Championships

The spring Tatrafest program is built primarily around Open Tatry and the Slovak Senior Championship 65+. The 2026 edition ran from May 16–23 at Hotel SOREA Hutník, Tatranské Matliare. Both principal classical competitions used an eight-round Swiss system with FIDE rating. The published time control was 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from move one. The combined published prize fund for the program was €1,700, including €1,500 in cash prizes. Open Tatry 30+ attracted players from Slovakia and several neighboring federations. FM Tomáš Vojta of the Czech Republic won with 7/8, finishing ahead of Slovak IM Zuzana Hagarová, who scored 6.5 points. The parallel 21st Slovak Senior Championship 65+ produced another strong field. FM Karol Motuz scored 7/8 to finish first, ahead of Peter Demeter on tiebreak.

⚡ Blitz and Festival Events

Tatrafest supplements its classical tournaments with shorter-format competitions. The spring program includes SeniorBlesk, which reached its 20th edition in 2026. The autumn festival traditionally adds TatraBlesk alongside the Tatranský pohár. These side events give participants a second competitive format while maintaining the social atmosphere of a week-long chess stay in the mountains. The most recent completed autumn Tatranský pohár was the 71st edition, held from October 5–12, 2025 at Hotel SOREA Hutník. The tournament consisted of nine classical rounds and was organized by OBLS s.r.o. in cooperation with ŠK Dúbravan, with FA Ladislav Šipeky serving as Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter. This cooperative structure is important to understanding Tatrafest: the festival identity connects several related chess traditions even when individual events have different formal organizers.

🏔️ Chess in the High Tatras

The High Tatras setting is an integral part of Tatrafest. Hotel SOREA Hutník in Tatranské Matliare has become the principal venue for the spring and autumn festival programs. Players can combine tournament participation with accommodation at the venue, while accompanying persons can use the hotel and surrounding mountain region independently of the chess program. Tatrafest has therefore developed a format that combines serious FIDE-rated chess with a residential tournament experience. Moreover, support from the Slovak Chess Federation and public institutions has helped maintain the long-running tournament tradition. The festival also continues to plan future senior competition. The 2027 Tatrafest senior program is already registered for May 22–28, 2027 in Tatranské Matliare.
