Tapolca Városi Sportegyesület Sakk Szakosztály is the chess section of Tapolca Városi Sportegyesület. The organization is based in Tapolca, Hungary. It continues more than half a century of organized chess activity in the city. Moreover, it supports competitive players, young talents, local schools, and community chess programs.

Organized chess in Tapolca began on November 7, 1969. The original section formed within Mereszjev Sportegyesület at the Tapolca Garrison Club. It soon became one of the region’s leading chess organizations. In 1974, its team reached Hungary’s NB I national division. Therefore, Tapolca developed a strong reputation within Hungarian team chess.

The modern chess section operates within Tapolca Városi Sportegyesület. The wider sports association was founded on October 25, 2001, with chess among its founding sections. Today, the chess section preserves the traditions of its predecessor. At the same time, it develops new opportunities for adults and juniors. Soós András has served as Chess Section Leader since 2024. In addition, he became a member of the association’s board in 2026.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Activity

The chess section organizes and supports several established competitions in Tapolca. Its best-known events include the Balaton Cup, the Ács János Memorial, and the Szeremley rapid tournament. These competitions attract players from Tapolca and other parts of Hungary. Moreover, they help maintain the city’s long tournament tradition.

The section also organizes the Szeremley Huba Memorial Rapid Tournament with the Municipality of Tapolca. The event honors Szeremley Huba, a respected supporter of local chess. In 2026, the tournament offered separate groups for licensed competitors and developing players. Therefore, adults, juniors, rated players, and newcomers could all participate.

The leading group uses a nine-round Swiss format and counts toward FIDE Rapid ratings. Meanwhile, the second group provides competition for young and non-licensed players. The organizer also offers cash prizes, trophies, medals, and age-category awards. As a result, the event combines serious competition with broader community participation.

Beyond its own tournaments, the club participates in team championships and individual competitions. Its players compete in county events, national youth tournaments, rapid competitions, and classical tournaments. The section also supports school chess and local chess education. Consequently, members can progress from regular training to organized competitive play.

🎓 Youth Development and Chess Education

Youth development is one of the section’s main priorities. The club provides regular chess training at the Tamási Áron Cultural Center in Tapolca. Lessons and training sessions take place on six days of the week. Therefore, young players can follow a consistent development program.

The training structure includes beginner groups for younger children, advanced junior groups, and competition-focused sessions. Coaches teach rules, tactics, strategy, and practical tournament skills. In addition, chess helps participants develop concentration, logical thinking, perseverance, and problem-solving ability.

Young members regularly enter county team competitions and national youth events. They also compete in individual rapid and classical tournaments. As a result, players can test their skills against opponents from other clubs. However, the section does not focus only on results. It also aims to build confidence, sportsmanship, and a lasting interest in chess.

The club works closely with parents, coaches, schools, the wider sports association, and the Municipality of Tapolca. Moreover, the association aims to provide a stable structure for long-term sporting development. Through training, tournaments, school chess, and team competition, the chess section introduces new generations to Tapolca’s established chess tradition.
