♟️ About Società Scacchistica Triestina 1904
Società Scacchistica Triestina 1904 A.S.D. (SST 1904) is a historic chess club and tournament organizer based in Trieste, Italy. The organization traces its origin to 1904, when the authorities approved the creation of a chess club in the city following an application submitted the previous year. The present amateur sports association was formally constituted on March 20, 2006. Today, SST 1904 is affiliated with the Italian Chess Federation and operates from its permanent club premises at Via Trento 16 in central Trieste. The club combines international tournament organization with year-round local chess. Its program includes FIDE-rated classical and rapid events, club tournaments, training for adults and children, university chess, school initiatives, junior activities, and traditional competitions such as the Torneo del Carso and Torneo Gastronomico di Trieste. During the 2025–2026 season, SST 1904 also organized the nine-stage Maratona Rapid FIDE di Trieste, giving members and visiting players regular internationally rated rapid competition. Matteo Fausto Marusich is the current legal representative of Società Scacchistica Triestina 1904 and serves as Tournament Director of its flagship International Chess Festival “Città di Trieste.” He is therefore the most appropriate primary organizational contact. The club’s main current project is the 28th International Chess Festival “Città di Trieste,” scheduled for August 29–September 4, 2026, at the Seminario Vescovile di Trieste.📜 More Than a Century of Chess in Trieste
The club’s history began in 1903, when a group of chess enthusiasts led by Antonio Tarabocchia requested authorization to establish a chess circle. Approval arrived in 1904, the year SST recognizes as its foundation. Trieste quickly became an important center of Italian chess. In 1923, the city hosted a major international tournament featuring players including Emanuel Lasker and Esteban Canal. SST later hosted the Italian Championship in 1954. The club also records notable competitive achievements. Its teams won the Italian team championship in 1967, the Italian women’s team title in 1976, and national rapid team titles in 1971 and 1972. In 1997, SST launched the modern International Chess Festival “Città di Trieste.” Over subsequent editions, the tournament hosted players who later reached the highest level of world chess, including Fabiano Caruana and Gukesh Dommaraju.🏆 Tournament Activity
SST 1904 maintains a dense tournament calendar throughout the year. The Maratona Rapid FIDE di Trieste 2025–2026 consists of nine FIDE-rated rapid stages running from November 2025 through August 2026. The club also organizes the Torneo del Carso – Kraški Turnir, created in cooperation with Slovenian chess clubs in 2006. The tournament reached its 20th edition in 2026, reflecting Trieste’s natural chess connections with neighboring Slovenia. Other recent activities include club freestyle and pairs tournaments, university chess, the long-running Torneo Gastronomico, and tournaments for students of Trieste’s University of the Third Age.🌍 International Chess Festival “Città di Trieste”
The 28th International Chess Festival “Città di Trieste” will run from August 29 to September 4, 2026. Following a recent venue change, the tournament will take place at the Seminario Vescovile di Trieste, Via Pasquale Besenghi 16. The festival consists of three FIDE-rated classical competitions. Open A – Master is a nine-round tournament for players rated above 1900. Open B – Trofeo Polojaz uses eight rounds for players in the intermediate rating range, while Open C – Beginners provides seven rounds for lower-rated competitors. All sections use a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The current Open A entry list contains players from around 20 federations and includes Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, and other titled competitors. Matteo Marusich serves as Tournament Director. The event is organized by SST 1904 with support from the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, Comune di Trieste, and Fondazione Libero e Zora Polojaz.🎓 Training and Community Chess
Chess education is another regular part of SST 1904’s work. The club offers courses for both adults and children, including dedicated programs for players under 14. Members can also attend a weekly analysis workshop led by CM Filippo Camana. In addition, the club works with schools and has developed activities linked to junior and university chess. Its community program extends to older learners as well. In May 2026, SST hosted the sixth tournament for students who had attended chess courses at the Università della Terza Età di Trieste during the 2025–2026 academic year.
