♟️ Regional Federation Identity
Śląski Związek Szachowy is the regional chess federation for the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. It is based in Katowice and has served as one of the central structures of organized chess in the region since 1924. For players, the federation matters because it connects clubs, arbiters, coaches, juniors, and tournament organizers inside one competitive system. It gives the region a practical framework for league play, official championships, ratings, and long-term chess development. At the same time, it has a clear public presence in both major cities and local club environments across Silesia. Today, the federation continues to combine grassroots work with ambitious sporting goals. IA Michał Paździora, the current president, is one of the main public figures behind that direction.
🏆 Championships and Tournament Activity
Tournament work stands at the center of the federation’s identity. Śląski Związek Szachowy runs and supports a wide competitive calendar that includes regional championships, junior championships, league structures, and large festival events. Its work covers both III Liga Śląska for seniors and juniors and important title events such as the Indywidualne Mistrzostwa Śląska Juniorów. It also serves as the organizer of the Festiwal Szachowy “Szachy w Ustroniu Łączą Pokolenia”, which has grown into one of the region’s most visible summer chess festivals. Beyond regional activity, the federation has also taken on major international responsibility. In 2026, it acted as the main organizer of the European Individual Chess Championship in Katowice, which gave the federation a much larger role on the European chess stage. For players, that mix of regional continuity and international ambition gives the federation real sporting weight.
🌱 Youth Development and School Chess
Youth development is one of the federation’s strongest areas. Śląski Związek Szachowy works through a dedicated youth commission, regional junior championships, team events, and a broader training structure built around the Śląska Akademia Szachowa. This gives younger players a clear path from first competitive experience to stronger regional and national play. The federation also supports training camps, junior squads, and school-focused chess activity, which helps build depth instead of relying only on a few top talents. In addition, it has remained active in the Edukacja przez Szachy w Szkole program, including teacher training for early-school chess instruction. That educational side is important because it brings chess into classrooms and helps schools start stronger local programs. As a result, the federation does not only organize events for established players. It also helps new generations enter the game, improve steadily, and stay connected to the regional chess community.
