The history of ŠK JOLY Lysá nad Labem began on December 13, 1921, when chess enthusiasts established a club in the town. Contemporary records in the Czechoslovak chess magazine documented its foundation. Among the founding members was Václav Hrouda, who introduced his son František to the club. František Hrouda joined in October 1931 and remained an active player until 1997. Moreover, he dedicated several decades to teaching young players and beginners, while also helping experienced chess enthusiasts with correspondence games. One of the club's earliest significant sporting achievements came in 1934. At the 11th Congress of the North Bohemian Chess Association, Vratislav Hadač finished first, ahead of world women's champion Vera Menchik, whom he held to a draw. After a period of reduced activity, Jan Prchal became club chairman in 1970 and worked to revive organized competition. Subsequently, Petr Saeckl assumed the presidency in 1978, beginning an important period of development. Under Saeckl's leadership, multiple generations of players joined the club. The adult teams eventually reached the Czech Extraliga, with the organization at one point fielding two teams at the country's highest competitive level. The club subsequently achieved its greatest team success by winning the Czech Extraliga championship. Meanwhile, renewed investment in youth training helped establish the next generation of competitive players. Since 2019, Martin Musil has served as club president. During his leadership, the organization moved from its former premises on Sojovická Street to its newer club facilities on Náměstí Bedřicha Hrozného. The club also continued developing successful youth teams and individual national championship competitors.🏆 Czech Extraliga & Team Chess Achievements
ŠK JOLY Lysá nad Labem has a distinguished record in Czech team competitions. Its most important national achievement came in 2019, when the club won the Czech Extraliga championship. This title represented the culmination of decades of competitive development and established Lysá nad Labem among the country's leading chess centers. The club continued performing at a high level in subsequent seasons. Its official achievement records include second-place finishes in the Czech Extraliga in both 2024 and 2025. Furthermore, ŠK JOLY earned third place at the 2025 World Senior Team Championship, demonstrating its competitive experience beyond national league play. The organization also participates in lower national and regional divisions. By maintaining teams at different competitive levels, it offers opportunities for experienced players, developing competitors, and juniors transitioning into adult team chess. Team competition remains central to the club's sporting identity, connecting players across generations and providing a pathway from local chess to national championships.🎓 Chess Academy & Youth Development
