♟️ About SK Bremen-West e.V.

SK Bremen-West e.V. is a chess club based in the western part of Bremen, Germany. The organization was founded on January 1, 1997, through the merger of Schachgemeinschaft Oslebshausen and Gröpelinger Schachgemeinschaft. It continues the chess traditions of both former clubs while providing regular activities for children, teenagers, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players.

The club meets at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen. Children receive a separate weekly playing and training session, while the main club evening welcomes junior and adult members for friendly games, tournament preparation, analysis, and organized competition. New players can also attend introductory courses and discover the club before deciding whether to join.

SK Bremen-West combines competitive chess with a strong community focus. Its program gives young players a structured path from learning the rules to participating in club tournaments, junior competitions, and official team matches.

🎓 Youth Chess and Club Activities

Children’s and youth chess forms a central part of the club’s work. Qualified trainers and experienced members help young players develop tactical awareness, calculation, strategic understanding, and practical tournament skills.

The junior program includes a children’s club championship, chess-problem competitions, youth team matches, and participation in regional and German championship events. The club also works with local schools and supports tournaments for pupils from western Bremen.

Adult and junior members can participate together in the Open Club Championship. In addition, the annual club program includes the Meisterklasse, club cup, blitz tournaments, seasonal competitions, and informal chess evenings. This mix allows recreational members and ambitious competitors to find suitable playing opportunities.

For team competition, SK Bremen-West cooperates with Findorffer Schachfreunde under the name SG FinWest. The joint structure fields several teams across different divisions of the Bremen chess system. It gives established competitors, developing players, and juniors opportunities to represent their clubs at an appropriate competitive level.

🏆 Gerold-Menze Memorial Tournaments

SK Bremen-West organizes the Gerold-Menze Memorial Tournament in honor of its former long-serving children’s officer and public-relations representative. Gerold Menze made an important contribution to the club’s youth program, and the memorial series reflects his commitment to introducing young people to competitive chess.

The first three editions brought together players from Bremen and neighboring regions for rapid competition. The tournament included a separate lower-rated section, allowing developing players and juniors to compete in a suitable environment.

After a multi-year break, the club revives the event in 2026 with support from Findorffer Schachfreunde and Schachfreunde Bremer Osten. The 4th Gerold-Menze Memorial Rapid Tournament takes place on September 5 at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen.

The program includes an open FIDE-rated section and a separate B-Open for players with a German rating of no more than 1250. Both sections use a nine-round rapid format. A separate Gerold-Menze Memorial Blitz Tournament follows on September 6.

Through its memorial events, youth training, internal competitions, school partnerships, and SG FinWest teams, SK Bremen-West continues to support accessible over-the-board chess in Bremen.
