♟️ About SK Bremen-West e.V.

SK Bremen-West e.V. is a chess club based in Bremen, Germany, with its home at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen in the western part of the city. The present club was founded on January 1, 1997, through the merger of Schachgemeinschaft Oslebshausen and Gröpelinger Schachgemeinschaft. It is affiliated with the Landesschachbund Bremen and provides competitive and recreational chess for children, teenagers, and adults. Current federation records list 59 members for SK Bremen-West. The club offers a broad program of team chess, club championships, rapid and blitz tournaments, youth competitions, training, and community events. Children up to approximately age 14 meet on Thursdays from 4:45 PM, while the general club evening begins at 7:00 PM. SK Bremen-West also cooperates closely with Findorffer Schachfreunde through the SG FinWest team structure. Moreover, its youth program includes training, junior team competition, solving contests, club championships, and events designed to introduce children without previous club experience to tournament chess. Ingo Veit is the current First Chairman (1. Vorsitzender) and principal official contact for SK Bremen-West. Mariusz Schröder serves as Tournament Director and Youth Director, while Joachim Kropp, a C-Trainer, is one of the officials responsible for children’s chess. The club has remained highly active in 2026 and is now preparing two major memorial events at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen: the 4th Gerold-Menze Memorial Rapid Tournament on September 5, 2026, followed by the 1st Gerold Memorial Blitz Tournament on September 6.

📜 History and Development

SK Bremen-West was created when the chess organizations from Oslebshausen and Gröpelingen decided to combine their resources in the 1990s. Both predecessor clubs had experienced declining membership, and discussions between their members eventually led to the formal merger at the beginning of 1997. The new club continued the traditions of chess in both western Bremen districts while placing particular emphasis on attracting younger players. Gerold Menze, a long-serving children’s officer and public-relations representative, became especially important to this work. Today, the club maintains its permanent playing base at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen, Am Nonnenberg 40. This venue hosts weekly training, internal competitions, team matches, youth activities, and the club’s larger open tournaments.

♜ Team Chess and SG FinWest

SK Bremen-West cooperates with Findorffer Schachfreunde in team competition under the name SG FinWest. The partnership allows players from both clubs to compete across several league levels and provides places for experienced players, developing adults, and juniors. The cooperation continued actively during the 2025–2026 season. In June 2026, the club celebrated the promotion of FinWest 8, a newly formed team consisting primarily of children and teenagers together with two adult players. The team earned promotion from the D-Klasse in its first season. SK Bremen-West also fields players in higher FinWest teams. Consequently, members have a clear pathway from introductory youth chess and lower-league competition toward stronger city and regional team chess.

🎓 Youth and School Chess

Youth chess is a central part of SK Bremen-West’s identity. The club provides dedicated Thursday training and maintains junior club championships, blitz events, problem-solving competitions, and youth team participation. The 5th Schülerturnier des Bremer Westens, held on February 5, 2026, specifically targeted children and teenagers who did not yet belong to a chess club. The event was free to enter and used a five-round rapid format, giving newcomers a simple introduction to organized competition. SK Bremen-West juniors also achieved notable results outside the club during 2026. Jari Wahlhäuser and Noah Hesterberg were members of the Schule Am Pulverberg team that won the German Primary School Chess Championship in May 2026. Meanwhile, the club’s U20 team finished fourth in the Bremen youth team competition. The 2025–2026 Children’s Club Championship was won by Noah Hesterberg, who secured the title for the third time.

🏆 Gerold-Menze Memorial Tournaments

The Gerold-Menze Memorial Tournament honors the club’s former long-serving children’s officer and public-relations representative. The first edition was created after his death to recognize his contribution to youth chess at SK Bremen-West. The memorial developed into a rapid tournament with separate competition for lower-rated players. The third edition attracted 59 participants, compared with roughly 30 in each of the first two editions. FM David Höffer won the A-Open ahead of IM Markus Lammers, while former SK Bremen-West player Tilo Wettlaufer won the B section. After a break in the series, SK Bremen-West is reviving the event in 2026. The 4th Gerold-Menze Memorial Rapid Tournament is scheduled for September 5 at Bürgerhaus Oslebshausen. The club has published separate entry lists for its A-Open and B-Open. The following day, September 6, 2026, the club will organize the 1st Gerold Memorial Blitz Tournament at the same venue. These two events extend the memorial concept into a full weekend of competitive chess and continue Gerold Menze’s strong connection with accessible tournament and youth chess.

🏛️ Organization and Club Life

Ingo Veit leads the club as First Chairman. Jan Ricardo Kropp serves as Treasurer, while Mariusz Schröder combines the roles of Tournament Director and Youth Director. Children’s chess is coordinated by Joachim Kropp and Reiner Guse, while several additional club members manage SG FinWest teams, equipment, and the club website. Regular activities take place every Thursday outside the Christmas and summer school holidays. Therefore, SK Bremen-West combines a stable weekly club structure with competitive tournaments, youth development, team chess, and cooperation with other Bremen chess organizations.
