♟️ About Sivakasi Chess Club

Sivakasi Chess Club is a long-established chess organization based in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1973 by NPSS Rathina Nadar, the club has played an important role in tournament chess in southern Tamil Nadu for more than five decades. Its activities include FIDE-rated tournaments, Tamil Nadu championships, national championships, rapid events, junior competitions, coaching programs and arbiter development. The club’s history is closely connected with several prominent figures in Indian chess. Founder NPSS Rathina Nadar was an enthusiastic player and chess organizer who also served as municipal chairman of Sivakasi. Under his leadership, the club staged the Asian Junior Chess Championship in Sivakasi in 1979, an important early international event in Indian chess. International Arbiter R. Anantharam served as organizing secretary of that championship and has remained closely associated with the club for decades. Today, G. Ramamoorthy serves as President of Sivakasi Chess Club, while IA R. Anantharam serves as Secretary and is the club’s principal public contact. The organization regularly works with the Virudhunagar District Chess Association, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and local educational institutions to stage major competitions in Sivakasi, Rajapalayam and other locations in the district.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization has been central to Sivakasi Chess Club since its early years. In 1978, the club organized the Tamil Nadu State Junior Championship. The success of that competition helped Sivakasi secure the Asian Junior Championship the following year. The club subsequently expanded its calendar with national championships, state championships, rating tournaments and memorial events. Sivakasi Chess Club has organized several important Indian national competitions. These include the National Sub-Junior Championship in 1996, the National Junior Championship in 1999 and another National Junior Championship in 2005. In 2019, it jointly organized the National Sub-Junior Championship with Namakkal Chess Foundation. Over the years, the club has also staged more than 25 Tamil Nadu state championships and numerous FIDE-rated events. Its tournament history has featured many leading Indian players. A young Viswanathan Anand won the NPSS Rathina Nadar Memorial tournament in Sivakasi in 1983. Later club events attracted players such as R Praggnanandhaa, Aravindh Chithambaram, R B Ramesh, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Laxman R R and R Vaishali, alongside many other titled players. The club also experiments with less conventional formats. Its past program has included Chess960, Basque Chess, Chess Doubles, rapid chess and multi-format chess festivals. Chess Doubles became a particularly recognizable local feature in Sivakasi and Rajapalayam, while the club has continued to combine these events with more traditional classical and rapid tournaments.

🌱 Junior Chess & Development

Junior chess has remained an important part of Sivakasi Chess Club’s work. The organization has staged state and national youth championships, training camps and competitions designed to give developing players regular tournament experience. Several players associated with the club have represented Tamil Nadu or India in major youth competitions. Among them, R. Visalatchi represented India at the Asian Youth Championship after finishing runner-up in the National Under-17 Girls Championship. P. Maheswaran won a Tamil Nadu junior title, while other Sivakasi players have earned state age-group titles and represented their universities in inter-university competition. The club has also supported talented players beyond tournament organization. Its historical development programs included assistance for deserving young players with school and college education, including support for accommodation and studies. In addition, the club has arranged coaching camps with Grandmasters and International Masters. Another notable connection is International Master P. Shyam Nikhil. Although he was not originally from Sivakasi, the club recognized his talent while he was still a school student and helped support his participation in competitions. This reflects the club’s broader tradition of combining tournament activity with player development.

📚 History & Contribution to Indian Chess

Sivakasi Chess Club’s development spans more than half a century. After its foundation in 1973, it quickly moved beyond local events and became involved in state, national and international chess organization. The 1979 Asian Junior Championship marked an especially important early milestone. Following the death of founder NPSS Rathina Nadar in 1981, the club continued organizing tournaments in his memory. The NPSS Rathina Nadar Trophy also became associated with the National Junior Championship, connecting the Sivakasi organization with generations of leading Indian junior players. The club has contributed to chess administration as well as tournament organization. It hosted an All India Technical Conference for arbiters in 1980 and has organized numerous arbiter seminars and technical programs. Its long-serving secretary R. Anantharam is an International Arbiter with extensive experience at world, Asian, national and state championships. In recent years, Sivakasi Chess Club has remained an active FIDE-rated tournament organizer. Its FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament 2026, scheduled for November 12–15 at Nadar Higher Secondary School in Rajapalayam, continues this tradition. The event is organized within the Tamil Nadu chess structure and again lists R. Anantharam as the principal club contact.
