♟️ Club Identity
Siliguri Chess Guardians Club is a chess organizer based in Siliguri, West Bengal, India. The club was established in 2024 and is presented publicly as a society registered under the West Bengal Societies Act. Even though it is new, it has already taken a visible place in the tournament scene of North Bengal. Its identity is built around organized over-the-board competition rather than casual club play alone. For players in Siliguri and the wider region, that matters. The club has moved quickly into formal chess administration and public event delivery. As a result, it already stands out more as a tournament platform than as a small informal local group.
🏆 Tournament Activity
The club’s strongest public role is the Siliguri SCGC International FIDE Rated Classical Chess Tournament. The first edition was listed by AICF for August 12–17, 2025, and the second edition appeared on the AICF calendar for May 26–31, 2026. The 2025 event developed into a substantial open tournament. It ran for six days and ten rounds at Silpanchal Bhawan in Siliguri, used a classical 90 minutes plus 30 seconds time control, and offered a ₹400,000 prize fund. It also drew 284 players, including three International Masters. That field size gave the club an immediate national-level footprint. For a new organizer, this was a serious first step. It showed that SCGC could attract titled players, juniors, and strong regional competitors in one event.
🌱 Regional Role and Player Development
SCGC’s early work also shows a clear connection to the formal chess structure in West Bengal. The 2025 international event was publicly recognized in connection with Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha and the Darjeeling District Chess Association, while the closing coverage highlighted the presence of district and state chess officials. That matters for players because it places the club inside a real competitive framework rather than outside it. The tournament also gave local North Bengal players a stronger home event. FM Samyak Dharewa of Siliguri finished in the top group, while other players from Siliguri and Jalpaiguri also appeared near the top standings. In practical terms, SCGC is still at an early stage. However, its first year of activity already points in a clear direction: large rated events, serious competitive conditions, and a stronger tournament base for chess in and around Siliguri.
