Siguldas šaha klubs (Sigulda Chess Club) is a chess organization based in Sigulda, Latvia, promoting competitive and recreational chess throughout Sigulda Municipality and the wider Vidzeme region. During 2026, it has been involved in the Vidzeme qualification cycle for the Latvian Championship, school chess, the Latvian municipal team championship in Mālpils, and tournaments in other Latvian communities. At the same time, experienced players can compete in strong FIDE-rated events, including the club’s long-running Sigulda District Open Rapid Chess Championship. FA Visvaldis Gercāns is the principal organizer and public contact for Siguldas šaha klubs. He serves as a board member, tournament director, and arbiter and is consistently listed as the responsible contact in current official tournament regulations. The club’s main upcoming event is the 15th Sigulda District Open Rapid Chess Championship, scheduled for October 3–4, 2026, in Sigulda.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Siguldas šaha klubs maintains a varied tournament calendar rather than focusing on a single annual competition. Its events range from qualification tournaments connected with Latvia’s national championship structure to rapid competitions, school chess, and collaborative regional events. In early 2026, the club organized the Vidzeme Regional Qualification Tournament for the 2026 Latvian Championship in cooperation with Sigulda Municipality and the Latvian Chess Federation. The competition formed part of the official pathway toward the national championship semifinals and finals. The club was also involved in the Vidzeme Schools Chess Olympiad qualification stage in Sigulda on February 24. Seventy pupils from schools in Sigulda, Vangaži, Baldone, Carnikava, and surrounding communities registered for the event, with the leading players qualifying for the regional final. Another notable project was the 2nd ALA LIGNEA Latvian Municipal Team Chess Championship, held in Mālpils on January 31, 2026. Siguldas šaha klubs organized the tournament together with several municipal and regional partners.

🎓 Youth and Community Chess

Promoting chess among children and young people forms an important part of the club’s work. Siguldas šaha klubs cooperates with local schools, the municipality, and the Latvian Chess Federation on competitions designed specifically for school-age players. The club has also organized tournaments for beginners and players working toward Latvian sports classifications. This gives young competitors a structured route from introductory chess into formally rated competition. At the same time, the organization deliberately keeps its larger events open to several generations. Its rapid championships include dedicated awards for juniors, women, seniors, and local Sigulda players, encouraging participation across age groups.

♜ Regional Chess Cooperation

Siguldas šaha klubs regularly cooperates with other organizers rather than limiting its work to its home city. This regional approach has connected the club with competitions in Mālpils, Cēsis, and other parts of Latvia. On August 30, 2026, the club is scheduled to co-organize the fourth chess tournament at the Viļaka Roman Catholic Church together with Šaha klubs Wenden, the local parish, and the Latvian Chess Federation. Visvaldis Gercāns will serve as Chief Arbiter. This cooperation helps extend officially organized chess into smaller Latvian communities while also giving Sigulda players access to a broader regional tournament network.

🌟 Sigulda District Open Rapid Chess Championship

The Sigulda District Open Rapid Chess Championship is the club’s flagship competition and has developed into a recurring international-rated event. The 14th edition, held on September 27–28, 2025, attracted a broad field including strong Latvian players and competitors from other federations. The tournament offered a €1,000 prize fund together with special prizes for women, juniors, seniors, foreign players, and Sigulda Municipality competitors. The 15th edition will take place on October 3–4, 2026 at Sigulda Secondary School on Krišjāņa Barona Street. The main tournament will use 11 Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 12 minutes plus five seconds per move and will be submitted for FIDE Rapid rating. The current entry list already includes GM Arturs Neikšāns and GM Ilmārs Starostīts, alongside experienced Latvian players, juniors, seniors, and international participants. FA Visvaldis Gercāns serves as Tournament Director, while IA Alberts Cimiņš is Chief Arbiter.

🏛️ Organization

Visvaldis Gercāns remains the central organizational figure at Siguldas šaha klubs. Sigulda Municipality lists him as the official contact person for the association, while current Latvian Chess Federation tournament regulations identify him as director and arbiter of several club-organized events. The municipality describes the club’s purpose as promoting chess among all age groups and organizing chess tournaments. This combination of community development, school chess, regional cooperation, and FIDE-rated competition defines the club’s current activity.
