♟️ About Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club

Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club (SCCC) is one of the principal chess institutions in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The club traces its organized activity to 1979 and joined the UAE chess competition structure in 1981. Today, it is affiliated with the UAE Chess Federation and operates from a large dedicated chess center in Al Juraina, Sharjah. Its work covers elite competition, youth development, player training, community programs, and the organization of major international tournaments. The club maintains an extensive calendar of classical, rapid, and blitz chess, while also developing Emirati players through training programs and international competition. Its flagship event is the Sharjah Masters, which regularly attracts leading grandmasters from around the world. Other recurring projects include the Sharjah International Ramadan Chess Championship, junior competitions, training camps, and invitational matches. The club is also home to leading UAE Grandmaster Salem A.R. Saleh, one of the strongest players in the history of Emirati chess. As of September 1, 2026, Taryam Matar Mohammed Taryam is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors following a new Sharjah government decision confirming the club’s board on the same date. Imran Abdullah Al Nuaimi has served as Vice Chairman, while Dr. Khalifa Ahmed Al Mazrouei serves as Secretary-General and is closely involved in the club’s player-development program. The club remained highly active throughout 2026 with the Ramadan Championship, international youth participation, summer programs, and the Battle of Minds Chess Challenge. However, the planned ninth Sharjah Masters was postponed, and a replacement date had not yet been announced by September 1, 2026.

📜 History and Chess Center

Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club has been part of organized UAE chess since the early years of the country’s national chess structure. The club was established in 1979 and formally entered the UAE chess league system in 1981. A major development came with the creation of its modern dedicated facility in Sharjah. The present chess center was officially opened in 2013 and was designed specifically for large-scale chess activity. The complex includes substantial tournament halls, training rooms, classrooms, administrative facilities, and areas for international chess operations. Its principal playing hall can accommodate several hundred competitors, allowing SCCC to stage both domestic championships and large international tournaments at its own premises.

🌟 Sharjah Masters

The Sharjah Masters is SCCC’s most internationally recognized tournament. Since its launch, the competition has developed into a high-level classical event attracting grandmasters, rising juniors, and strong professional players from numerous federations. The 2025 edition brought approximately 350 players from around 60 countries to Sharjah. The field included many elite grandmasters and formed part of the international FIDE tournament calendar. The club planned the 9th Sharjah Masters for 2026 with three sections: Masters A for players rated 2500+, Masters B for players rated 1900+, and Masters C for players rated 1400–1899. The principal section was also included in the FIDE Circuit 2026–2027. However, the organizing committee subsequently postponed the tournament because of the regional situation. The official tournament website states that a new date will be announced later. Therefore, the 2026 Sharjah Masters should not be described as a completed event.

🏆 2026 Tournament Activity

SCCC continued organizing substantial competition despite the Sharjah Masters postponement. The 31st Sharjah International Ramadan Chess Championship took place in February 2026 at the club. More than 200 players appeared in the official tournament records, including GMs Vladimir Akopian, Gadir Guseinov, Salem A.R. Saleh, Ahmed Adly, Bassem Amin, Pouria Darini, and Viorel Iordachescu. In May, the club launched the Abdulaziz Belhaif Chess Championship, attracting approximately 240 players. The event was created as an annual memorial tournament while also giving Emirati competitors additional opportunities to face strong international opposition. Another distinctive project was the Battle of Minds Chess Challenge. Its second edition ran from August 19–24, 2026, pairing UAE GM Salem A.R. Saleh against former Chinese elite GM Wang Hao across classical, rapid, and blitz chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Developing Emirati players is a major part of SCCC’s work. The club combines coaching with regular international exposure rather than relying only on domestic training. In summer 2026, a 16-player group connected with Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club competed at the Arab Youth Chess Championship in Cairo. Players represented age groups ranging from U8 through U20, while several members of the club also competed as part of the official UAE national delegation. The delegation was headed by Dr. Khalifa Ahmed Al Mazrouei, the club’s Secretary-General. Coaches included GM Viorel Iordăchescu, Suhaib Al Aklah, and Hashem Al Nuaimi. The club also organized the four-week “A Holiday Reimagined 2026” summer program. Around 140 boys aged 7–12 participated in chess instruction alongside educational, cultural, technological, and sporting activities.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

On September 1, 2026, the Sharjah government issued a new administrative decision confirming the current Board of Directors. Taryam Matar Mohammed Taryam serves as Chairman. The board also includes Abdullah Murad Issa Abdullah Hussein, Faisal Mohammed Abdullah Al Hammadi, Imran Abdullah Imran Humaid Al Nuaimi, Khalifa Ahmed Khalifa Al Mazrouei, Saif Mohammed Ibrahim Mohammed Al Hammadi, and Nasser Omar Mohammed Abdullah Abdulrahman. For tournament and player-development matters, Dr. Khalifa Ahmed Al Mazrouei – Secretary-General is a particularly useful operational contact. The club also maintains specialist technical and tournament-management staff for its international events.
