♟️ About Seaton Chess Club

Seaton Chess Club is a community chess club based in Seaton, East Devon, England, near the Jurassic Coast. The club has operated for more than five decades and held its 58th Annual General Meeting in August 2026. It provides regular over-the-board chess for local players and welcomes participants of all playing strengths. For the 2026–27 season, the club meets at The Gateway in Seaton. The club combines friendly chess with structured competition. Members take part in classical and rapidplay league chess, while the club also runs its own championship and several long-established trophy competitions. In addition, Seaton organizes blitz and rapid events under the Jurassic name. These competitions have expanded from small club tournaments into events that attract players from across Devon and neighboring counties. Paul Hampton is the Club Secretary and the principal operational contact. He also handles the organization of the club’s larger public tournaments. During 2026, Seaton remained active in local and county chess, while member Jonathan Underwood won Devon’s Champion of Champions competition. The club’s main upcoming public event is the 4th Jurassic Rapidplay, scheduled for November 15, 2026 in Axmouth.

📜 Club History and Development

Seaton Chess Club has a long-established place in the East Devon chess community. By 2026, the club had reached its 58th AGM, reflecting decades of continuous organized activity. The club has maintained a strong local identity despite its relatively modest size. Regular internal competitions include the Cheeseman Trophy, Caines Cup, Porter Cup, club championship, blitz competitions, and other seasonal events. Moreover, Seaton has adapted its activities over time. The club developed an online presence, added digital tournament registration and Chess-Results support for larger events, and created its own YouTube channel to share games and tournament material.

♜ Club and League Chess

Seaton Chess Club normally meets during the winter season for regular club nights, friendly games, and competition. For the 2026–27 season, the club returns to The Gateway in central Seaton, with meetings scheduled fortnightly on Wednesday evenings. Competitive play includes both classical and rapidplay leagues. At the same time, members represent Seaton in wider Devon chess activities and local inter-club encounters. The 2025–26 season produced several notable results. In April 2026, Seaton defeated neighboring Sidmouth 6.5–4.5 in the inaugural Seaton–Sidmouth Challenge and won the newly created Martyn Adams Trophy. Then, in May, Jonathan Underwood became Devon Champion of Champions by winning the Winter Wood Shield.

🏆 Jurassic Tournament Series

The Jurassic events have become an important part of Seaton Chess Club’s public tournament program. The club has organized numerous Jurassic Blitz competitions, while the larger Jurassic Rapidplay series began in 2023. The inaugural rapidplay took place in Axmouth and attracted 27 players from several counties. Patryk Krzyzanowski won the event with 5.5/6. Seaton created the distinctive Ray Hunt Memorial Trophy for the tournament in memory of a long-standing club member. The series continued with a second edition in 2024 and a third in 2025. IM Jack Rudd won the 3rd Jurassic Rapidplay with 5/6, ahead of Rami Talab and Seaton player Jon Underwood.

🌟 4th Jurassic Rapidplay 2026

The 4th Jurassic Rapidplay is scheduled for Sunday, November 15, 2026 at Axmouth Village Hall in Devon. It is an ECF-rated, one-day Swiss tournament organized by Seaton Chess Club, with Paul Hampton listed by the English Chess Federation as the organiser. Players will contest six rounds at a time control of 20 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The event is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 5:30 p.m. The club estimates a total prize fund of more than £300. Therefore, the fourth edition continues Seaton’s development of the Jurassic Rapidplay from a new club initiative in 2023 into a recurring regional event.
